John Seifried, active in his community

John Seifried's lifelong passion was serving on the Fort Mitchell Fire Department.

His son, Mark Seifried of Edgewood, said he worked his way up the ranks to become captain and served for 42 years.

"He did that up until as long as he could continue to do it, " Mark Seifried said.

John Daniel Seifried, 84, of Fort Mitchell, died Saturday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington.

In addition to serving as a Fort Mitchell firefighter, Mr. Seifried was on the city's Board of Adjustment for eight years. And when the city decided it needed a swimming pool, he helped found the Beechwood Swim Club.

"He just took an active interest in his community, " his son said.

Mr. Seifried was one of the first 25 people included in Fort Mitchell's Wall of Honor.

Mr. Seifried retired as a second vice president at Western-Southern Life Insurance Co., Cincinnati, after 35 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II, retiring as a captain.

Mark Seifried described his father as "mild-mannered but very jovial."

He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, doing silly dances and telling jokes, his son said.

He also liked golf, bowling and softball.

Other survivors include his wife, Erma; three sons, Jay Seifried of Lake Villa, Ill., Kent Seifried of Villa Hills and Drew Seifried of Fort Mitchell; a brother, Albert Seifried of Cold Spring; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 644 Linn St., Suite 1026, Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.

Susan Tay Fruitticher Bilotta, 42, of Alexandria, died at 3:01 a.m. Thursday at her home. She was a self-employed cartographer.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Vincent T. Bilotta; a daughter, Elizabeth Fruitticher Bilotta, at home; sisters, Julie Schroeder of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and Robin Fruitticher of Portland, Ore.; and a brother, Thomas Fruitticher of Pensacola Beach, Fla.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorials are suggested to Esther Marie Hatton Cancer Care Center, St. Elizabeth Medical Center, 1 Medical Village Drive, Edgewood, Ky. 41017. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron, is handling arrangements.

Omer Lee Burden, 78, of Union, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired butcher and meat cutter with Partridge Meats, a member of Meat Cutters Union Local No. 7 and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Imogene Burden, and a son, Jeffrey D. Burden, both preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughters, Linda Lee Bishop of Walton, Marcia Katherine Burden of Union, Tammy Jo Burden of Verona, Becky Ann Clemons of Florence and Debra Sue Smith of Dry Ridge; sons, Omer Gene Burden of Florence, Ronald A. Burden of Crittenden, Steven M. Burden of Walton and Timothy L. Burden of Union; a brother, James W Burden of Cincinnati. 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Hazel L. Wells Chain, 85, of Cincinnati, formerly of Newport, died March 3. Survivors include her husband, William T. Chain; brother, Clyde Wells; sister, Mildred Carter; daughter-in-law Donna Hamblin; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Sons, Samuel Hamblin, Jerry Hamblin, and Roger Hamblin, preceded her in death.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Craver-Riggs Funeral Home, Milford, Ohio, is handling the arrangements.

Ruby Frances Delaney, 80, of Milford, Ohio, formerly of Falmouth, died Friday at Bethesda North Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of Reading Baptist Church, Cincinnati. She was a former member of Falmouth Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Leslie Delaney; a daughter, Joan Leslie Woodruff of Milford, Ohio; sons, Gary Lee Delaney of Warren, R.I., and Robin Lane Delaney of Florence; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Frank Egger, 79, of Florence, died at 1:50 a.m. Saturday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence. He was the retired owner of Egger's Home Improvement and Egger's Flooring in Taylor Mill, a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church and an Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the building committee at Oak Ridge Baptist Church, a charter member of the Taylor Mill Lions Club and a member of the Taylor Mill Boosters. He sponsored many knothole baseball teams in Taylor Mill, and was a member of the Home Builders Association. His wife, Evelyn "Jody" Egger, died in 1997.

Survivors include sons, Rodney F. Egger of Covington, Bradford A. Egger of Covington, David B. Egger of Florence, Alex W. Egger of Independence and Nichalaus A. Egger of Florence; a brother, David Egger of Crestview Hills; sisters, Alma Jean Peyton and Edna Lowe, both of Lexington; and two grandchildren.

Charles H. Gier, 78, of Fort Wright, died Sunday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.

Ellinor "Ruth" Goshorn, 77, of Highland Heights, died Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired private secretary with Schoepf-Mason Insurance Co. Her husband, Howard Walter Goshorn Sr., preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Patricia E. Thompson of Harrison, Ohio, Grace Lyons of Cold Spring, Cynthia Breedlove of Covington and Dorene Bierly of Butler; a son, Howard Walter Goshorn Jr. of Highland Heights; a sister, Daisy Pentz of Fort Thomas; a brother, Edward Pentz of Biloxi, Miss.; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Myrtle Katherine Welch Gossa, 86, of Carrollton, died Thursday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. She was a homemaker and a member of Jorden Baptist Church and the Sanders Fire Department Auxiliary.

Survivors include daughters, Virginia Shields of Ghent, Leta Woods of Louisville and Rena Reed of Carrollton; sons, Harold Owen of Melbourne, Fla., William Owen and Roger Owen, both of Texas, and Carl Owen of Verona; a brother, Wallace Welch of Kent, Ind.; 22 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services were Sunday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Burial was in Warsaw Cemetery.

William J. Gregory Jr., 70, of Erlanger, died Thursday at his home. He was a retired welder with Mar Mat Steel Fabricating Co., Erlanger, and Cincinnati Milacron, a deacon at Erlanger Baptist Church, and an Air Force veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Rachel Gregory; sisters, Nancy Duechle of Fort Mitchell, Sue Scott of Erlanger, Phyllis Bobinger of Erlanger, Mary Gregory of Las Vegas and Gayle Amussen of Glendale, Calif.; and brothers, Robert Gregory, Victor Gregory and Thomas Gregory, all of Erlanger.

Maud Ella Hopperton, 88, of Florence, died at 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired dietician with St. Elizabeth Medical Centers, was active in senior centers in Florence and Walton, and was a member of Beaverlick Baptist Church. Her husband, John Hopperton, died in 1999. Sons, Ronnie Hopperton and Donnie Hopperton, died in 1989 and 1985, respectively.

Survivors include a daughter, Janet Townsend of Florence; sons, Terry Hopperton of Hebron and Bill Hopperton of Florence; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Lytle Yelton Houston, 85, of Foster, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a farmer, a member and past chairman of the board at Pleasant Hill Christian Church and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Hardin-Browning American Legion Post No. 109 and a past chairman of the Mount Auburn cemetery board. His wife, Ethel Laverne Trankler Houston, died in 1989.

Survivors include daughters, Betty Shewalter of Palm Harbor, Fla., Anna Mary Marshall of Butler, Amy Plummer of Peach Grove and Janice Dane of Alexandria; a sister, Doris Browning of Erlanger; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Jackie Kilburn Sr., 54, of Newport, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a metal worker with Epco Foundry, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Kilburn; a son, Jackie Kilburn, Jr., of Newport; a daughter, Angie Kilburn of Newport; a brother, Carl Kilburn of Newport; sisters, Nanna Benson of Davison, Mich., and Mary Akemon of Newport; and two granddaughters.

Dorothy Adick Kinstler, 78, of Alexandria, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Her husband, George M. Kinstler, died in 2000.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Beth Kinstler of Alexandria and Norma Gaines of Covington; a son, Michael Kinstler of Burlington; sisters, Rosan Wilson of Sonora, Calif., and Lois Gubser of Bellevue; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Thomas A. Lehew, 59, of Cincinnati, formerly of Newport, died at 6:40 p.m. Thursday at Oak Pavilion, Cincinnati. He was a retired pattern maker with Cincinnati Milacron and a member of Holy Spirit Church, Newport. He was a member and an instructor with the Buccaneer Drum and Bugle Corps, Dayton.

Survivors include brothers, Charles Lehew of Cincinnati and Glen Lehew of Halifax, Va.; and sisters, Francis Sims of Morning View, Claudia Austin and Alma Walsh, both of Cincinnati.

Barry F. McNeill, 63, of Independence, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a machine operator with Johnson Controls, Florence, and an Air Force veteran.

William Eugene Myers, 85, of Maysville, died Sunday at Maysville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was a retired lead man with Brownings Co. and a setup man with Wald's Co., and a deacon and Sunday school superintendent with Central Baptist Church, Maysville. He was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Inez Christine Bierley Myers, died in 2003.

Survivors include a son, Bill Myers Jr. of Shelbyville; daughters, Diana Graves of Maysville and Yvonne Cracraft of Mays Lick; a sister, Irene Mason; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren.

Armella J. Prues, 89, of Milan, Ind., formerly of Covington, died Thursday at Ripley Crossing in Milan. She was a retired executive secretary with Wadsworth Electric Co., Covington, and a member of Mother of God Church, Covington.

Survivors include a nephew, William Schaefer of Orlando, Fla.

Rita Louise Stephens Reisenbeck, 75, of Covington, died at 5:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired clerk with the U.S. Postal Service, Cincinnati. Her husband, Jerome W. Reisenbeck, died in 1995.

Survivors include daughters, Janet Gordon and Julie Murphy, both of Covington, and Jane Reisenbeck of Minneapolis; a son, James Reisenbeck of Taylor Mill; a brother, John Louis Stephens of Titusville, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

Joseph Roark, 38, of Dry Ridge, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown. He was a general laborer.

Survivors include a daughter, Katie Roark of Dry Ridge; and sister, Deborah Collins of Frankfort and Trisha Morgan of Dry Ridge.

Douglas Simmons, 70, of Madison, Ind., formerly of Carrollton, died Saturday at Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was a retired employee of Rexnord Manufacturing Co. in Madison, and was a custodian with American Legion Post No. 9, Madison. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Madison and Sons of American Legion Post No. 9.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Simmons; a daughter, Linda Simmons of Carrollton; sons, Mark Simmons of Madison, Tim Simmons of Milton and Kevin Simmons of Carrollton; his mother, Pauline Breeden Simmons of Carrollton; sisters, Thelma Ward of Carrollton and Minnie Louise Mitchell of Bedford; brothers, Vernon Simmons and Harold Simmons, both of Carrollton; and seven grandchildren.

Charlotte Mae Smith, 80, of Latonia, died at 4:58 a.m. Sunday a t St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and farmer, and a former member of Madison Avenue Christian Church, Covington. She was a member of Lamplighters and Northern Kentucky Senior Citizens. Her husband, Gerald F. Smith, died in 1981.

Survivors include a son, Gerald T. Smith of Florence; daughters, Barbara Taylor of Panama City Beach, Fla., and Cheryl Kerler of East Bernstadt; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Virginia Tom Spurlock, 84, of Mason, Ohio, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died at 3:45 a.m. Sunday at Loveland Health Care Center, Loveland, Ohio.

She was a retired supervisor with General Electric in Cincinnati and a member of Latonia Baptist Church. Her husband, Clyde Spurlock, died in 1989.

Survivors include sons, Tim Spurlock of Cincinnati and Tom Spurlock of Mason, Ohio; a sister, Ruth Brinkman of Burlington; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Elke Maria Thomas, 62, of Covington, died at 12:50 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retail manager with STOK Industries and a member of St. Anthony Church, Taylor Mill. Her husband, Friedlen Dean Thomas, died in 1999. A daughter, Kimberly Thomas, died in 1963.

Survivors include sons, Capt. Michael D. Thomas of Beavercreek, Ohio, and Jeffrey Alan Thomas of Independence; sisters, Ute Stewart of Covington and Heike Kraus of Nuremberg, Germany; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Kathy L. Walton, 49, of Union, died Thursday at Jewish Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include daughters, Jacqulin Crowe and Natasha Herald, both of Newport; a son, William Crowe of Silver Grove; stepsons, Jeremy Herald of Hebron, Nathan King of Lakeside, Ore., and Nicholas King of Florence; her mother, Betty Duncan of Florence; and fianc�, William Switzer of Union.

Carrie Beatrice West, 81, of Newport, died at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired machine operator with General Electric, Cincinnati.

Survivors include her husband, Joe West; brothers, Clarence White of Alexandria, Lawrence White of Independence and Carrel White of Los Angeles; and sisters, Elsie Freeman of Williamsburg and Sue Farris of Gray.

Services will be at 5 p.m. today at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Williamsburg.

Donal D. White, 79, of Alexandria, died Thursday at Lakeside Heights Care Center, Highland Heights. He was a retired garment cutter and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret White; sons, Donald White of Surprise, Ariz., Michael White of Aurora, Ill., Douglas White of Berwyn, Ill., Mark White of Cold Spring and John White of Glenview, Ill.; daughters, Donna Schaetzle of Ninilchik, Ala., and Linda Walton of Cincinnati; a sister, Ruth Girdler of Cincinnati; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Helen Ginn Wood, 92, of Carrollton, died Friday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton.

She was a member of Carrollton Christian Church. Her husband, Sam Wood, died in 1958.

Survivors include a stepson, Sam Wood Jr. of Lake Wales, Fla.; nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.

James O. Work, 74, of Falmouth, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a retired employee of Grede Permacast, Cynthiana, and a member of Gardnersville Baptist Church, Pendleton County.

He was an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Georgia King Work; sons, James William Work, Steven Joe Work, George Adam Work and Kenneth Wade Work, all of Falmouth, and Paul Wayne Work of Bethel, Ohio; a brother, Ezra Lee Work of Williamstown; 11 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Jean R. Youtsey, 91, of Newport, died Saturday at her home. She was a clerk with Union Central Life Insurance Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 269, Fort Thomas. She was a member of the Girls Friendly Society and First Christian Church, Covington.

Survivors include a cousin, Mrs. R.H. Lowe of Fort Thomas.

Clara Rose Zechella, 84, of Alexandria, died at 8:25 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a restaurant worker with Luigi's in Cold Spring.

Survivors include a sister, Rose Kathman of Fort Mitchell; and brothers, James Zechella of Alexandria and Louis Zechella of Lexington.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Suite 1026, Cincinnati, Ohio 45203; or the charity of the donor's choice. Alexandria Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
