Dorothy Howard, devoted mom, churchgoer

Dorothy Belle Howard was the picture of courage to her family and friends.

Mrs. Howard, 81, of Independence, lost her husband, Charles Howard, in 1956.

She never re-married and raised their daughter. She worked hard and dedicated herself to her church and family, said her son-in-law, John Hoffman of Independence.

"She was always. . .there for her family, " Mr. Hoffman said. "She was soft-spoken but very direct. But she always spoke in a positive fashion . . . She was about the best person you would ever meet."

Mrs. Howard died at 8:20 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired clerk with Ohio National Life Insurance Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington.

Mrs. Howard was a greeter at the church, head of the Prayer Committee, and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and the Bereavement Committee.

She learned to be self-sufficient growing up on a farm in Grant County.

Other survivors include a daughter, Jeanne Hoffman of Independence; sisters, Bettie Engle of Cincinnati and Christine Bray of Ft. Worth, Texas; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the cathedral. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Memorials are suggested to Cathedral Memorial Fund, 1140 Madison Ave., Covington, 41011, or Open Door Community Church of God, 3528 Turkeyfoot Road, Erlanger, 41018.

Gladys Rupp Armstrong, 88, of Brooksville, died at 10:35 p.m. Saturday at her home. She was a nurse at the VA Medical Center, Cincinnati, and a member of St. James Church and Brooksville Senior Citizens. Her husband, Elvin Edward "Al" Armstrong, died in 1986.

Survivors include sons, LeRoy Armstrong of Sandpoint, Idaho, Raymond Armstrong of Medford, Ore., and Robert J. Foster of Cincinnati; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Burial will be in Brooksville Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimers Research Center, 231 Bethesda Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229.

Clara L. Rush Augenstein, 83, of Florence, died at 4:48 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Hopeful Lutheran Church, Florence. Her husband, Oscar W. Augenstein, died in 1985.

Survivors include sons, Dr. Roger M. Augenstein of Florence and Kenneth N. Augenstein of Las Vegas; daughters, Sharon S. Ebel of Phoenix and Bonnie M. Bourdo of Toledo, Ohio; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, Florence. Memorials are suggested to the church, 6431 Hopeful Road, Florence, 41042.

Norma S. Bowman, 92, of Erlanger, died at 12:47 p.m. Tuesday at Florence Park Care Center in Florence. She was a grocery clerk with Bowman Grocery Store.

Survivors include a brother, Vincent S. Bowman Sr. of Ft. Mitchell.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Lung Association, 11113 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Mary D. Forte, 87, of Newport, died Monday at her home. She was a retired tailor.

Survivors include a brother, Nicholas Forte of Newport; and sisters, Fan Miller of Villa Hills and Margaret Russo of Cincinnati.

Mass of Christian burial was this morning at Corpus Christi Church, Newport. Burial was in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimers Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45203. Radel Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.

Dorothy L. Frederick, 82, of Independence, died Monday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Vine Run Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughters, Wanda Price and Carol Tuttle, both of Crittenden; a sister, Faye Hollingsworth of Independence; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Carroll Dean Howard, 63, of Mt. Olivet, died Monday at his home. He was a foundry worker and a member of Milford Christian Church, Milford Masonic Lodge No. 767 and Harrison County Knight Temple. He also was a past master of Germantown Chapter No. 425 Order of the Eastern Star, and FFA Honorary State Farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Theda Graves Howard; sons, Tony Carroll Howard of Roswell, Ga., Terry Lynn Howard of Murphysville and Trent Allen Howard of Mt. Olivet; daughters, Te resa Kaye Howard Moore of Mt. Olivet, Tami Jane Howard Jones of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Tracy Ella Howard Simons of Germantown; brothers, Donald Berry Howard of Augusta and Shirley Rigg Howard of Williamstown; sisters, Mabel Glen Howard Newman of Milford and Vernetta Gail Howard Hamilton of Taylor Mill.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bracken Memorial Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Newman Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of Mr. Howard's late nephews, c/o Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Route 2, Brooksville, Ky. 41004; or the Hospice of Hope, 1 West McDonald Parkway, Maysville 41056.

Gene B. Kloenne, 82, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Sunday at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital North. He was a retired route foreman for Sealtest Dairy in Newport and Cincinnati. He also was a former employee with McCormick Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale, and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife Ruth Kloenne; sons, Jack Kloenne of Colorado Springs, Colo., Tim Kloenne of Scottsdale, Phil Kloenne of Erlanger, Joe Kloenne of Miami Beach, Fla. and Mike Kloenne of Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Mary Pat Kloenne of Charlottesville, Va.; and 13 grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. PDT today at St. Maria Goretti Church in Scottsdale. Memorials are suggested to Arizona Junior Golf Association, in care of Phoenix Thunderbirds, 7226 N. 16th St., Suite 100, Phoenix, Ariz. 85020. A. L. Moore and Sons Funeral Home, Phoenix, is handling arrangements.

Bonnie Jean Martin, 67, of Williamstown, died Tuesday at her home. She was a retired post office employee in Dry Ridge and a member of Sherman Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband, Clayton Martin; sons, Jerry Martin of Union, Barry Martin and Jimmy Martin, both of Dry Ridge; a daughter, Melanie Wallace of Williamstown; sisters, Mary Lou Trapp of Alexandria and Dora Schneider of Woodlawn; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Memorials are suggested to Sherman Church of Christ Memorial Fund, 1055 Sherman-Mt. Zion Road, Dry Ridge, 41035.

William P. Moore, 68, of Glencoe, died at 10:03 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was the retired owner of Moore Trucking Co., Northern Kentucky.

Survivors include a son, Gary Moore of Independence; stepdaughters, Tracy Hanser of Union and Terri Berger of Walton; brothers, Carl G. Moore of Villa Hills; a sister, Mary E. Cole of Louisville; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Dale Hollow, Ky. Memorials are suggested to Childrens Home of Northern Kentucky, 200 Home Road, Park Hills, 41011. Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

James M. Nodler, 56, of Edgewood, died at 1:10 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was Field Director of Claims for CSX Transportation Inc., Ft. Wright, and a participant and volunteer with the Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit at Christ Hospi tal, Cincinnati. His son, James Michael Nodler, died in 1994.

Survivors include his wife, Theo Nodler; and a daughter, Tammy Nodler, at home.

Services and burial were this morning at Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Christ Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Fund, Development Office, 2139 Auburn Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45219. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Michael Wayne Scott, 18, of Covington, died at 4:58 a.m. Friday at Tri-County Baptist Hospital in LaGrange.

Survivors include his mother and father, Susan Price of Harrison County and Michael V. Scott of Covington; and grandparents, Bud Rust and Joyce Bailey, both of Covington.

Private services were Tuesday. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence, handled arrangements.

Janet L. Melvin Searp, 72, of Ludlow, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a retired waitress with American Airlines and a member of Sts. Boniface and James Church, Ludlow. She also was a volunteer with St. Charles Care Center, Ft. Wright, and a member of the St. Charles Care Center Auxiliary. Her husband, Jerry J. Searp, died on June 4.

Survivors include daughters, Debbie Arkenau of Butler and Jo Rene Hass of Lexington; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, 41014, or St. Charles Care Center, 500 Farrell Drive, Covington, 41011.

E. B. Tomlin, 74, of Taylor Mill, died at 10:15 a.m. Monday at his home. He was a retired yard laborer with Southern Railroad Co., and a member of AFL-CIO Brotherhood of Railway Employees.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Tomlin; a son, Jim Gilbert of Latonia; daughters, Sue Gilbert of Taylor Mill, Carla Rowland of Latonia and Carol Bataglia of Burlington; sisters, Rose Shinkle of Bellefontaine, Ohio, and Pearl Hardin of Stockridge, Ga.; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Ruth M. Faulhaber Vater, 85, of Highland Heights, died at 6:30 p.m. Monday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Alexandria Chapter No. 337 of Order of the Eastern Star. She also was a member of Alexandria United Methodist Church and Women's Missionary Society. Her husband, Gerald Vater, died in 1986.

Survivors include sisters, Katherine Faulhaber of Highland Heights and Corine Clift of Alexandria.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Omer A. Webster, 78, of Independence, died at 12:40 p.m. Monday at his home. He was a retired electrician with Norfolk and Southern Railway and Safety Car Co., Ludlow. He was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church. His first wife, Elizabeth Carr Webster, died in 1976. His second wife, Sally Dallas Webster, died in 1996.

Survivors include daughters, Dorline Long of Pittsburgh, Betty Sharon of Ft. Mitchell, Irna R. Clore and Terri Hammons-Vinson, both of Erlanger; sons, Alan A. Webster of Erlanger and David O. Webster of Ft. Mitchell; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
