Edgar Lemker, Kenton magistrate

Edgar Whitney Lemker was married for 57 years after a three-hour courtship, so it was fitting that he would marry thousands of other couples in a three-decade career as a Kenton County magistrate.

The "judge, " as Mr. Lemker was known by friends, was also a man of community good works. "He was extremely active in the Sunday Morning Club, and was a charter member and president several times, " club member and former Kenton County Jailer Jim Knauf said of the organization, which has raised large amounts of money over the years for charities.

Mr. Lemker, 87, of Covington, died Saturday at his home.

He served as a magistrate for 30 years, being elected at least seven times, and was also retired as a maintenance supervi sor with the Kroger Co.

In 1990 Mr. Lemker and his wife, Mary, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and recalled how they married only three hours after meeting for the first time. It was truly love at first sight, Mr. Lemker remembered.

The marriages Mr. Lemker performed as a magistrate, mostly from his office on Pike Street in Covington's Lewisburg neighborhood, were the subject of many interesting stories told by his family.

"In the early 1950s he married a couple who didn't have any money. Twenty-five years later, on their anniversary, they drove to Covington from Pennsylvania to pay him his fee, " said Mr. Lemker's daughter, Martha Koetting of Camp Springs.

There was one couple Mr. Lemker married five times, Mrs. Koetting said. They would divorce and decide to remarry, and traditionally had her father preside, she said.

On another occasion a couple gave Mr. Lemker his fee in an envelope and left. He opened it later and found Monopoly money, Mrs. Koetting said.

"He was just a great guy, and was prominent in city politics, " said Knauf. "He had a lot of fun, but also took on a lot of responsibility in helping people."

Mr. Lemker was also a member and former president of the Panorama Organization for Pleasant Relations, at Panorama Apartments where he and his wife lived.

Mr. Lemker was also a longtime member of the Standard Club, the Covington Turners organization and the International Association of Machinists, Local No. 162, Cincinnati.
