Mary Oaks used love, skill with family and post office

Mary Elizabeth Oaks, former postmistress in Sparta, died Sunday at the Gallatin Health Care Center in Warsaw. She was 81.

Mrs. Oaks put a personal touch in the post office, said her daughter, Marcedes Cozart of Sparta. "She had a gentle way about her."

A few of her customers couldn't read. Mrs. Oaks would read them their mail and write their letters for them, Mrs. Cozart said.

Mrs. Oaks and her husband, Norvin, grew up on neighboring farms in Carroll County, outside of Sanders. After World War II, they were married and lived in Covington, where he worked for Kelly-Koett and later for Interlake Steel. Mrs. Oaks managed the household with farm-life skills. She sewed, quilted, cooked.

"When my dad got laid off, my mother would work at Coppin's or Woolworth's and he'd stay home and take care of us and the house and the meals. No matter what happened, they were a team. I always felt secure. There was always love in our house, " Mrs. Edens said.

In 1964 the family moved back to Sanders, where they had enough land to raise a large garden. Mr. Oaks worked in a chemical factory and Mrs. Oaks took a part-time job at the Sanders post office. She worked there for 18 years.

Her husband died in 1982 and shortly after, the postmaster position opened at Sparta. Mrs. Oaks won the job and spent eight years as postmistress.
