William H. Middendorf, engineer and inventor

William H. Middendorf of Ft. Mitchell lived all his 76 years in Northern Kentucky, but his lectures, inventions and books affected people far from his community.

A professor emeritus in electrical engineering at the University of Cincinnati, Mr. Middendorf held 27 patents for items such as a circuit-breaker, a tachometer, a valve-locating device and an electromagnetic game. He wrote, co-wrote or edited some 80 books - mostly on product design, a subject he taught during his last 20 years at UC.

Mr. Middendorf died Friday at the Baptist Convalescent Home in Newport.

He spent his boyhood in Florence and earned degrees at the University of Virginia and the University of Cincinnati be fore getting his doctorate in electrical engineering at Ohio State University. He taught 43 years at UC, from 1948 to 1991.

He also consulted with businesses, lectured, testified in court about electrical fires and electrocution, won honors and held memberships in numerous professional associations. He was on the board of trustees at St. Elizabeth Medical Centers and a member of the Diocese of Covington's Board of Education.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Taylor Middendorf; daughters Judith Marlowe of Orlando, Fla., and Susan Buscher of Edgewood; sons Mark Middendorf of Edgewood, Jeffrey Middendorf of Deer Park, Ohio, and Craig Middendorf of Charlestown, Ind.; sisters Margaret Fitch of Lexington, Ruth Winchester of Crestview Hills and Marie Voskhul of Charlestown, Ind.; a brother, Paul Middendorf of Edgewood; and 13 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Agnes Church in Ft. Wright. Visitation will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home in Covington. Entombment will be in St. Mary's cemetery mausoleum in Ft. Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to the William Middendorf Outstanding Faculty Award, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Cincinnati, Mail Location 30, Cincinnati 45221, or to the Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati 45203.

Mary L. Hightower Arens, 93, of Covington, died at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia. She was a retired Kenton County assistant juvenile officer and a security officer with Cal-Crim and several local department stores. She was a member of the Kenton County Women's Democratic Club and the Fraternal Order of Police.

Her husband, Arthur Arens, died in 1970. Survivors include daughters, Mary Jane Walden of Covington, Teddy Petrey of Ft. Mitchell and Pat Caudell of Latonia; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Church, Latonia, with visitation from 8:15 a.m. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright. Memorials are suggested to Rosedale Manor Special Fund, 4250 Glenn Ave., Latonia 41015. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Lillian "Lil" Crothers Berry, 62, of Covington, died Thursday at Gardenview Nursing Home in Cincinnati. A homemaker, she was a member of the Russellville Church of Christ, Russellville, Ohio, and the Russellville Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include her husband, Chester L. Berry of Covington; a daughter, Nancy Hughes of Florence; one grandchild.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Entombment will be in the cemetery of Spring Grove Mausoleum. Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, is in charge.

William A. Cox, 57, of Bellevue, died Wednesday at Veterans Hospital, Cincinnati. He was an installer of heating and air-conditioning equipment and a member of the Bellevue Vets.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Nipper Cox; sons, Jeff Cox and Darin Cox of Bellevue; daughters, Lori Johnson of Southgate and Robyn Cox of Dayton; a brother, Rick Cox of Dayton; a sister, Chevi Curliss of Cincinnati; four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue, with visitation from 9 and burial in Arlington Memorial Gardens, Cincinnati.

Charles E. Deaton, 73, of Newport, died at 10:10 p.m. Thursday at the Highlands of Ft. Thomas. He was a retired truck driver for A&H; Trucking.

Survivors include sons, Mark Deaton of Bellevue and Joseph Deaton of Covington.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, with visitation from 9 a.m. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Marian Deininger, 82, of Houston, formerly of Ft. Thomas, died Nov. 27 in Houston. She was a homemaker and former member of the Highland United Methodist Church, Ft. Thomas.

Survivors include her husband, Eugene H. Deininger of Houston; and a brother, Richard W. Thompson of Ft. Thomas.

Services were in Houston. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to the Highland United Methodist Church, Ft. Thomas. Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas, is assisting with arrangements.

Irvin Fessler, 69, of Bellevue, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He was the owner of Pasquale's in Bellevue, a member of St. Francis deSales Church in Newport, a former marshal and volunteer firefighter in Woodlawn.

Survivors include his wife, Shirlee Jehn Fessler; a son, Paul Fessler of Covington; daughters, Barbara Rutkowski of Atlanta, Laura Weier of Cold Spring and Pam Murphy of Florence; brothers, Gilbert Fessler and Donald Fessler of Highland Heights; a sister, Joan Stapleton of Erlanger; eight grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis deSales Church, with visitation 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association of Kentucky Bluegrass Regional Office, P.O. Box 23872, Lexington 40523-3872.

Ralph N. Foy, 73, of Newport, died Tuesday at his home. He was a retired automobile mechanic. Survivors include a sister, Lucille Foy Ryan of Independence. Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill, is handling arrangements.

Randall Hill, 81, of Maysville, died Thursday at the Maysville Extended Care Facility. He was a retired Methodist minister who had served in Mason, Lewis, Fleming, Bath and Nicholas counties. Survivors include his wife, Geneva Hill; a daughter, Emily Roberson of Maysville; a brother, Nelson Hill of Falmouth; a sister, Ruby Lyons of Cynthiana; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Benson United Methodist Church, Cynthiana, with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Drake Funeral Home, Cynthiana, and from noon Monday at the church. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery.

Flora Marie Hiltz, 95, of Covington, died Thursday at her residence. She was a retired bookkeeper for the Ruthman Manufacturing Co., Cincinnati. She was a member of Mother of God Church, Covington, and the Mother of God Ladies Society.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at Mother of God Church, with visitation from 11 a.m. until noon at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be at Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright. Memorials are suggested to Mother of God Church, 119 W. 6th St. Covington 41011.

Clarence Hudson, 87, of Covington, died Tuesday at the Harmony Health Center, Cincinnati. He was a retired machinist for General Electric in Evendale, Ohio, and a deacon at the Corinthian Baptist Church, Newport.

Survivors include his wife, Pearl Shelton Hudson; a son, Luther Hudson of Birmingham, Ala.; stepdaughter, Sarah Hill of Covington; stepson, Howard Hill of Covington; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Corinthian Baptist Church, with visitation from 6 p.m. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is in charge.

Dean R. Maxedon, 77, of Pendleton County, died Friday at his home. Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler.

James R. McGee, 81, of Lakeside Park, died Friday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Covington.

Hattie Poole Ryan, 93, of Verona, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. Arrangements are pending at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona.

Ruth M. Seligman, 93, of Lakeside Park, died Thursday at her residence. She was a homemaker and a member of the Opti Mrs. Club. Her husband, Charles Seligman, died in 1968. Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Seligman-Doering of Southgate; a sister, Marcella Kraemer of New Jersey; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. today at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Ft. Mitchell, with visitation from 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the Parish Kitchen, P.O. Box 1234, Covington 41011, Fairhaven, 260 Pike St., Covington 41011, or the Point (formerly NKAR) 104 Pike St., Covington 41011. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Zelma C. Sizemore, 92, of Lakeside Park, died at 2:25 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired school teacher for the Henderson County School system and a member of the Florence Christian Church, Florence. Her husband, Bernard L. Sizemore, died in 1964.

Survivors include a daughter, Anita Smith of Lakeside Park; and one grandchild. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence, with visitation from 9 a.m. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery, Sebree. Memorials are suggested to Florence Christian Church, 300 Main St., Florence 41042.

Elmer E. "Bub" Trapp, 68, of Jonesville, died Thursday at Veterans Hospital in Cincinnati. He was a retired farmer and an Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Dickerson Trapp; a son, Jeffrey A. Trapp of Burlington; a stepson, William M. Rhodes of Glencoe; a brother, August Trapp of Rabbit Hash; one grandchild. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton, with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Hughes Chapel, Union.

Donald Norris West, 66, of Glencoe, died Thursday at his residence. He was a retired steel worker for Interlake Steel, Newport. He was a member of Pleasant Home Baptist Church, Owen County, and United Steel Workers of America Local 14289.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Isacs West; daughters, Gwen Maines of Warsaw, Cindy Williamson of Sparta and Julie Hamilton of Union; sons, Keith West of Sanders and Mark West of Glencoe; a foster son, Danny Delehanty of Newport; sisters, Ruth Campbell of Orlando, Fla., and Mildred Hatfield of Newport; brothers, Howard West of Brooksville and Adrian West of Dayton, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw, with visitation from 5 to 9 p.m. today. Burial will be in Glencoe Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to charity.
