Col. Parsons: scaled heights of Army career
Col. Harold Charles Parsons, a career Army man and engineer who served on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, died Thursday at Bethesda Hospital North, Montgomery, Ohio. He was 90.
Col. Parsons, who established his home in Park Hills in 1958, was often away from it on assignments, said his daughter, Mary Jo Sage.
"He was gone a lot, but he was very devoted to his family, " she said. "He was very truthful and ethical."
Col. Parsons worked as a mechanical engineer building railway tunnels through the Rocky Mountains in the early 1930s. He married
his childhood sweetheart, Geneva Handy, in 1934 and moved to Salt Lake City, where he worked with teams vying for the land speed record on the Utah Salt Flats.
He was part of the D-Day landing on Omaha Beach, served under Gens. Walton Walker and George Patton and helped liberate concentration camps, including Buchenwald.
He served as dean of students at the Ohio College of Applied Science in Cincinnati. He was a vice president of the Commonwealth-Tumpane Co. and spent six years living in Saudi Arabia. He and his family returned in the 1970s.
Col. Parsons enjoyed woodworking and made furniture.
"He worked with the grandchildren, teaching them how to use tools, " said Mrs. Sage. "He loved to do yard work and work around the home. He fixed things for everyone in the neighborhood."
He recently moved from Park Hills to Florence.
He was a member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Park, and the Retired Officers Association of Cincinnati.
Other survivors include his wife, Geneva A. Handy Parsons; sisters, Elizabeth Peterson and Agnes Sutton, both of Sedona, Ariz., and Jean Emerson of Twin Falls, Idaho; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Lakeside Presbyterian Church. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.

Clifford Lewis Cook, 83, of Dry Ridge, died at 9:51 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Comelia Robinson Cook; a daughter, Mary Lou Stamper of Dry Ridge; sons, Marvin Cook of Elsmere and Ernie Cook of Villa Hills; a sister, Gertrude Smith of Dry Ridge; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Monday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, 7730 U.S. 42, Suite 6-C, Florence, 41042.
Donald Evans, 67, of Walton, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired foreman for the Formica Corp. in Evendale, Ohio, a Marine Corps veteran, and a member of the Beaver Lick Christian Church and Masonic Lodge No. 304, Union.
Survivors in clude his wife, Shirley Evans; sons, Todd Evans of Elsmere, Mark Evans of Florence, Kerry Evans of Verona and Troy Evans of Dry Ridge; brothers, Eddie Evans of Walton, Harry Evans of Verona and Earl Evans of Union; a sister, Faye Williamson of Calvert City; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Beaver Lick Christian Church Cemetery.
Alma June Finley, 72, of Newport, died at 7:39 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Donald Finley; sons, Kenneth Finley of Woodlawn and Michael Marshall of Batavia, Ohio; daughters, Marian Swiney of Belcher, Theresa Leopold of Glencoe and Cecilia Leopold of Ross; brothers, Teddy Ratlif of Belcher and James Ratlif and Perlie Ratlif, both of Alexandria; sisters, Nora Lloyd of Knoxville, Tenn., and Ossie Lowiec of Chicago; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Ruth D. Giesel, 89, of Burlington, died Monday at the Florence Park Care Center, Florence. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Ernest O. Giesel, died in 1968.
Survivors include her sons, Richard Giesel of Burlington and Robert Giesel of Bartlett, Ill.; a brother, Irv Carlson of San Diego; four grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Aileen Watson Highlander, 89, of Maysville, died at 12:45 a.m. Friday at the Vanceburg Rehabilitation Health Care Center, Vanceburg. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Carrie Shake of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Margaret Reba Hoskins, 88, of California, died at 2:35 p.m. Friday at her home. She was a homemaker.

Mary Ann Justice, 55, of Ft. Mitchell, died at 8:15 a.m. Thursday at her home. She was a computer operator for AT&T;, a member of St. Augustine Church, Covington, and a volunteer at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center Thrift Shop.
Survivors include her parents, Carl and Mary Huelsman of Ft. Mitchell; a brother, Tom Huelsman of Verona; and three sisters, Linda Staten of Burlington, Carol Drummey of Edgewood and Kathy Kiely of Villa Hills.

Alma Niewahner Kammerer, 89, of Covington, died Wednesday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, and the St. Henry and Ft. Mitchell Senior Citizens. Her husband, Albert A. Kammerer, died in 1972.
Survivors include a daughter, Rosemary Shea of Edgewood; a son, Richard Kammerer of Xenia, Ohio; a brother, Charles Niewahner of Elsmere; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Alma Lewis, 87, formerly of Latonia, died at 8:50 p.m. Friday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. Arrangements are pending at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.
Thornton Lynch, 76, of Villa Hills, died at 2 a.m. Friday at his home. He was a retired salesman for Harrison Tire & Rubber Co.
He was a member of Crescent Springs Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder deacon and Sunday school teacher, and a former mayor of Crescent Park.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Jean Lynch; daughters, Donna Lee Cuthbert of Villa Hills and Jean Ann Haas of Amelia, Ohio; a brother, Robert Lynch of Ft. Wright; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Claytus "Bud" Ogden, 71, of Union, died at 3 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a farmer and a member of East Bend Baptist Church, Union.
Survivors include a sister, Jean Hubbard of Union, and a brother, Billy D. Ogden of Union.

Lula M. Rouse, 86, of Elsmere, died at 6:50 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Fred S. Rouse, died in 1954.

Pearl M. Sager, 81, formerly of Erlanger, died Thursday at the Highlands of Ft. Thomas Nursing Home.
She was a volunteer for St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood, and a charter member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary No. 7099.
Survivors include brothers, Albert Carson of Ft. Wright, Arthur Carson of Mason, Ohio, and Henry Carson of Springfield, Ohio; sisters, Louise Manning of Ft. Wright and Shirley Dean of Hillsboro, Ohio; two grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Martha P. Sketch, 81, of Covington, died at 8:20 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit, Covington.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Pathfinders of St. Augustine.

Woodrow Minter Wilson, 85, of Alexandria, died Tuesday at his residence. He was a retired tile setter with Local 1083 Laborers Union, Parkersburg, W. Va. Survivors include his wife, Juanita Wilson; a daughter, Linda Layfield of Cairo, W. Va.; a stepdaughter, Margie Schweitzer of Alexandria; a stepson, Eugene Montgomery of New Hampshire; sisters, Beaulah Snyder and Lucille Willrich, both of Avon Park, Fla.; a brother, Marden Wilson of Galion, Ohio; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
