J. Russ Crockett, served Boone, Covington as finance director

J. Russ Crockett served God, his family, his community and his country.

"He was a very strong leader, a strong organizer and a strong family man, " said his son, Kenton County Prosecutor Bill Crockett of Ft. Wright.

"He had a heavy belief in the church. He believed in being involved in the community and giving back for the good the community gives to you."

Mr. Crockett, former finance director for the city of Covington and Boone County, died at 11:13 a.m. Monday at his home in Florence. He was 81.

He grew up in Frankfort and took a job with Greyhound Bus Lines before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1941. He was stationed in the Pacific Islands and was in several battles, including Okinawa.

When he returned from the war in 1945, he married Florence Finneran in Lexington, where he was working for Greyhound. Shortly after, they transferred to Covington, where Mr. Crockett became district manager.

When the couple started having children, Mr. Crockett switched jobs to become license inspector for the city of Covington. Around 1970, he became finance director for the city.

At the same time, he headed a state association of finance directors and also worked part-time as executive director for the Northern Kentucky Electric Authority, a group that organized the state's electrical code. He worked for the authority for more than 30 years.

"He was hard-working, a typical "father knows best' of the 50s, always there, making sure we had family values, family meals every night, " Bill Crockett said. "He always made sure we had the best of everything. He was very self-sacrificing."

Mr. Crockett retired as Covington's finance director to become the first full-time finance director for Boone County in 1978, Bill Crockett said. When he retired in 1980, he became the state director for the American Association of Retired Person's tax aid service in 1982.
