Mary Elizabeth Wells, active in her church

Over the weekend, the youth group of Hilltop Church of Christ in Taylor Mill decorated the church for Christmas.

Karen Janice Wells-Sims of Dayton said she was pleased to hear so many of the teen-agers say, "We're making this pretty for Grandma."

"Grandma" is Wells-Sims' mother, Mary Elizabeth Jordan Wells of Dayton who died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. She was 74.

Mrs. Wells was an active member of the church. She was a member of the Beacons group there, as well as the Ladies for Christ.

"If the door was open, we were there, " said her daughter, also a church member. "There were weeks when we were never home, and I would say, 'Mom, I'm so tired.'"

An arthritis sufferer, Mrs. Wells also did aqua therapy twice weekly in the Health South swimming pool in Edgewood, with a group of grandmothers who dubbed themselves "The Baywatch Grannies, " after the television show "Baywatch."

"I'd sit there and laugh, " her daughter said of the group. "They were so funny."

Mrs. Wells was a retired bookkeeper with the former Gulf Oil Co., Campbell County, and a member of the Jolly 60s group of Grace Baptist Church in Middletown, Ohio.

She also was a former leader of the Girl Scouts Licking Valley Council Troop 329.

She and her husband, Chester Harold Wells, who died in 1993, brought up their two daughters to believe that they could do anything, that being a woman shouldn't stop them, Wells-Sims said.

As children, neither of her parents liked school, Wells-Sims said, but they raised two daughters who would become teachers. Wells-Sims formerly taught for the Dayton Independent Schools, and her sister, Charla Rene Wells of Latonia teaches at Ockerman Elementary School in Florence.

In her later years, Mrs. Wells suffered from many health problems, including renal failure, an inoperable heart blockage and diabetes. Yet she continued to walk the 26 steps from street level to the home she shared with Wells-Sims.

"With her health problems, some people would have given up, " Wells-Sims said, "but not Mom."
