Edna Gerhardt, 86, fearless adventurer

Edna M. Gerhardt was a fearless adventurer and skilled handywoman. She climbed out on ledges of tall buildings to take unique photographs, drove an 18-wheel tractor-trailer and scaled a 60-foot high radio antenna tower to fix a loose wire -- all after she retired.
"There was nothing she couldn't or wouldn't do, " said her niece, Margie Gerhardt of Covington.

Miss Gerhardt, of Covington, died Friday at Florence Park Care Center. She was 86.

She was a retired secretary and accountant with McIntosh Restaurant and also worked for Sperti Inc. She was a member of St. Paul Christian Community Church.

Miss Gerhardt was an excellent photographer who was interested in taking photos from unique perspectives, even if it required precarious positioning. "The slides she took were breathtaking, " said Margie Gerhardt. "She wanted unique photos that no one else had."

Miss Gerhardt also craved adventure. For instance, when she discovered that a friend on a Colorado farm had an 18-wheel tractor-trailer, she insisted on driving it. "She said, 'Move over, I'm getting behind the wheel, ' and off she drove, " said her niece.

If anybody had an electrical or plumbing problem, Miss Gerhardt could fix it, including a loose wire atop a 60-foot high radio antenna tower for a man too frightened to climb the structure. By then, she was in her 60s.

"Edna knew everything there was to know about anything and if she didn't, she found out about it, " said Margie Gerhardt. "She was an avid reader. She read everything.

"She was a very intelligent woman and, while not attending college, she went to numerous business schools to aid her knowledge."

Miss Gerhardt also was a traveler who toured extensively in Europe and throughout the United States. Her favorite spots were in the western United States.

"She was so outgoing and opinionated that initially some people were afraid of her, " said her niece. "But when you got to know her, she was one of the neatest people you would ever want to meet."

Miss Gerhardt is also survived by a nephew, LeRoy Gerhardt of Florence.
