Woodrow Greene loved helping people
Woodrow "Woody" Wilson Greene "loved the challenge of figuring out a solution to a fix-it problem, " said his granddaughter, Ronda Arnold.

He could fix anything, and that skill gave the Walton resident many opportunities to help others, she said.

And he never turned them down, she said. "He loved helping other people, " she said.

The only thing he liked better than fixing things was teaching others how to do it. "He would teach us everything from driving a car to replacing plumbing or hanging wallpaper, " Arnold said.

Mr. Greene, who died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth South Medical Center in Edgewood, was a retired dispatcher with the L & N Railroad in Latonia and a farmer.

He also partnered with his son, Larry Greene, in Greene & Greene Electric. After he retired, he worked as a custodian at the First Baptist Church in Walton, where he was also a deacon.

He served as a Walton city council member in the 1960s, Arnold said.

He and his wife, Georgia Mae Henry Greene, would have been married 68 years Sunday.

Mr. Greene liked to tell the story of their wedding day, when he bought a marriage license, gasoline, lodging, supper, breakfast and a movie, all for less than $10.

"He was always happy and laughing and very much a tease and a big flirt with the girls, " Arnold said.

He and his wife shared a passion for University of Kentucky sports. The family had to schedule birthday parties and other celebrations around games.

They also shared a passion for playing cards, and competed for 15 years in a local Rook league.

Mr. Greene learned a new card game, Phase 10, about three years ago. Seventy-five years of smoking had ruined his lungs, but he could still sit up for up to seven hours to play the game, Arnold said.

His son, Larry Wilson Greene, preceded him in death.
