Evelyn L. Arns, 'truly a self-made woman'

Evelyn L. Arns was a hard worker who never let adversity, no matter how great, stand in her way.
Friends and family say Arns would often reminisce about growing up during the Great Depression, when her mother had to go out looking for pieces of coal to sell to feed her two children.

Mrs. Arns began working herself at the age of 16, eventually landing a position as a bookkeeper at Dodd's Jewelers in Covington and Cincinnati, a position she held for more than 50 years.

"She was truly a self-made woman, " said her cousin, Robert Daniels. "She didn't have a lot of formal education, but she was extremely intelligent, especially with numbers."

Mrs. Arns did such great work at Dodd's that after several years her boss, as a gesture of appreciation, told her to pick out something she wanted from the jewelry store. When she informed him that what she wanted might be too expensive, he told her not to worry. Daniels said she picked out a watch with diamonds in it.

Mrs. Arns, 85, of Latonia, died Thursday at her home. She was a member of Latonia Christian Church and the Local Ladies Card Club. Her husband, George D. Arns, died in 1978.

Daniels, who described himself as a conservative Republican, said Mrs. Arns always made a point to defend the work of Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal policies.

"She was really proud of him, especially because he raised the minimum wage. Being such a hard worker, that was important to her, " Daniels said. "My wife and I were kind of timid when we were growing up. In her life she had no choice but to be aggressive, and she tried to instill that in us."

In her free time, Mrs. Arns enjoyed traveling. One of her favorite destinations was Nashville, where she could enjoy another of her favorite leisure activities: listening to country music.

Daniels' wife, Emelie, said Mrs. Arns went to great lengths to keep in contact with a family that included more than 20 cousins.

"She could talk with any type of person, no matter what their education, " Daniels said. "I'm really going to miss that about her.

"She would keep us informed about everyone in the family."
