Lyle Haggard, teacher, traveled extensively

In a nine-year span, Lyle Haggard saw a lifetime of sights around the world.

He and his wife, Mildred Murphy Haggard, rode elephants in Thailand, sailed small boats on the Nile and walked the Great Wall of China.

They road a mail boat to Norwegian fishing villages in fiords so narrow there was less than a foot of clearance on each side of the vessel.

They toured Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Russia -- when it was still the Soviet Union.

"There were very few places we missed, " said Mrs. Haggard

Mr. Haggard of Taylor Mill died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Her husband was an excellent traveling companion -- adventurous, curious and energetic, said Mrs. Haggard.

"When he went anywhere, he wanted to see it all and take his time, " she said. "That was the only thing about traveling that didn't suit him, that he wanted to take it all in and study it and sometimes he couldn't."

The Haggards had to stop traveling in 1991 when health problems beset Mr. Haggard. He had trouble with his hips -- he later had both replaced -- and had been earlier diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The cancer went into remission for 12 years before it metastasized this year into the bone.

Mr. Haggard retired in 1979 after a 30-year career teaching math and physics in three Northern Kentucky schools. The first 14 years he spent at Newport High. After a year at Holmes High, he taught for 15 years at Highlands High School in Fort Thomas.

He was a member of the National, Kentucky and Northern Kentucky education associations and the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association

He was a long-time member of Ashland Avenue Baptist Church in Covington, where he was a deacon for 43 years and a Sunday School teacher.

He served in the Army from 1937 to 1941, and in the Army during World War II, from 1942 to 1945.
