Eula Weissmann, 71, took care of people as a ministry

After she retired from the Internal Revenue Service in Covington, Eula Weissmann spent her time caring for older people and sick people.

The Covington resident didn't take any money for it. She looked at it as a kind of ministry, something that she just wanted to do, said her son, Jeff Weissmann of Burlington.

Mrs. Weissmann, who died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington at age 71, studied for the ministry at Boyce Bible College in Louisville, earning her degree when she was in her late 50s.

"I think she wanted to be an ordained minister, but she was unwilling to change churches to do that, " her son said. "She was a very loving, caring, very giving person. She always tried to think of others before herself."

She was a member of the Madison Avenue Baptist Church in Covington, where she played the piano and organ and sometimes sang. In recent years, Southern Baptists have discouraged women from going into the ministry.

Mrs. Weissmann was also a past matron of Rosebud Chapter No. 39 Order of the Eastern Star and past worthy high priestess of White Shrine of Jerusalem.

Survivors include a brother, Wayne Taylor of Demossville; and two grandchildren.
