Lee Lanter, long-time Grant County attorney

Lee B. Lanter was well-thought of enough in Grant County that he won his first race for county attorney in 1942 while he was away serving with the U.S. Army during World War II.

The job he did in that office was received well enough by his constituents that he was re-elected eight times.

By the time he retired from the office in 1978, he was the longest-serving county attorney in the state of Kentucky.

There were several keys to his popularity, said his daughter, Marylee L. Willoby, of Dry Ridge.

"He was always fair, " she said. "He genuinely liked people, and he genuinely liked to help people."

Mr. Lanter, of Williamstown, died at 4:45 a.m. Monday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. He was 94.

He was very progressive in his outlook for the county, Willoby said, and he used his influence with the fiscal court to help steer the county in the direction it needed to go.

He was instrumental in getting the Grant County Hospital and Grant County High School built, and in improving water service. He persuaded the court to buy property close to the courthouse so the county could use it later for parking.

He helped his first wife, Blanche Brandenburg Lanter, who died in a 1968 accident, to establish the county's first library. Late in his life, he donated land for a new library building in Williamstown. It was named the Lee B. Lanter Public Library.

Her father was a generous man who tried to treat everyone the same, regardless of social or economic status, said Willoby, a former Grant County school board member who is now Grant County coroner.

The only people he discriminated against were those accused of breaking the law whom he wound up prosecuting as county attorney.

"If you broke the law, he could come down hard on you, " Willoby said.

He was a past president of the Kentucky Bar Association, was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and served on the Northern Kentucky Board of Regents in the latter half of the 1970s.

He was a deacon and lifelong member of Dry Ridge Christian Church; a member of Grant Lodge No. 85 F&AM, Williamstown Order of the Eastern Star No. 301 and Indra Consistory of the Scottish Rite.

He was active in the Dan Beard Council of the Boy Scouts of America and earned the Silver Beaver Award for service to the organization.

Other survivors are his wife, Louise Browning Lanter; a stepdaughter, Phyllis Reed of Edgewood; a stepson, Mark Browning of LaCentre, Wash.; brothers, Ottie P.
