Doris Hunt Wallace, nurse, spent life helping take care of children

Doris Hunt Wallace was all about kids.

Her own, a brood of five sons and a daughter who all went on to earn college degrees -- three of them with doctorates -- and her 13 grandchildren.

The babies she helped to deliver as an obstetrics nurse at the old Booth Hospital in Covington.

The mentally handicapped youngsters she worked with as a longtime volunteer at the Redwood School and Rehabilitation Center in Fort Mitchell.

"Kids were her big thing, " said a son, Jim Wallace of Fort Wright. "We had a baby in our house for nearly 20 years, and she admitted she planned her family that way because she liked babies."

Mrs. Wallace, of Park Hills, died at 3 a.m. Saturday at O'Fallon Health Care Center, O'Fallon, Ill. She was 74.

His mother was first and foremost a caregiver, Jim Wallace said.

That's what steered her into nursing school, from which she graduated as valedictorian.

That's what connected her to Redwood, where she worked with groups and prepared meals and whatever else needed to be done, and to Community of Faith Presbyterian Church in Covington, for which she visited the sick and shut-in.

That's what caused her one day when her children were still young to pick up a baby squirrel that had fallen out of a tree in the Wallace's backyard and nurse it back to health.

"She was always happy, always smiling, and that was because she was able to do what she loved most, helping others, " Jim Wallace said. "She was motivated never for herself, always for someone else. Or something else. Dogs, cats, birds. She was very much a caregiver."

Mrs. Wallace and her husband, Calvin, who died in 1996, were active members of the Tandem Square Dance Team at the Promenade Palace in Latonia for more than 25 years. "We kids would have a babysitter once a week for their square-dancing night, " her son said. "When we got older, they would go on week-long square dance retreats, "

She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary and Women's Circle at Community of Faith Presbyterian Church.
