George Dameron Davis, 88, athlete, executive

George Dameron Davis was on the road to the big leagues -- until a pitch shattered his knee and his plans of playing for the Cleveland Indians. But it didn't shatter his competitive spirit.

"He was a tremendous competitor. He was there to win, " said his son, Gary Davis of Cincinnati.

Mr. Davis, 88, who died Saturday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home, loved sports -- football, basketball, baseball, golf.

"He was always an honored-kind of athlete, " his son said.

Mr. Davis earned a spot in the Northern Kentucky High School Hall of Fame for lettering in football, basketball and baseball at Dayton High School; played football and baseball at the University of Kentucky; and signed with the Cleveland Indians after college.

His dream of playing professional baseball ended with the knee injury, but it didn't keep him from the game entirely. Mr. Davis played fast-pitch softball at the top amateur level for another 10 years, including a Cincinnati team that won a National Championship. For the next decade, he switched from player to mentor -- teaching his two sons the fundamentals of the game as their Little League coach.

Mr. Davis took his passion for winning with him on the career path as well, working as a labor relations director for Ford Motor Co. and then Pan American Airlines. While working for Pan Am in the early 1960s, he spent several years at Cape Canaveral during NASA's first manned space flights and worked with astronauts such as John Glenn.

"Some place we have a Christmas card from John Glenn, " his son said.

Mr. Davis retired at 65 as senior executive vice president of Figgie International in Cleveland and retired for a second time at age 70 as president of Clark Reliance in Cleveland. He and his wife moved back to Cincinnati after his retirement, and after his wife's death in 1995, Mr. Davis moved to Fort Thomas.

Golf was Mr. Davis' sport of choice for the last 30 years and "he was pretty -- good, " his son said. In the early 1970s, he won the Cleveland Open Pro-Am with teammate Tom Weiskopf, one of the top 10 professional golfers at the time.

"He was always up for a golf game, " his son said. "He was pretty tough -- particularly when there was money on the line."
