Robert Hoppenjans, promoted area police

Robert B. Hoppenjans was a prominent Northern Kentucky business executive and civic leader.

He was owner and president of Star Foundry in Covington and the first chairman of the Lakeside Park-Crestview Hills Police Authority Board.

He also was on the board of directors of St. John's Orphanage in Fort Mitchell and was a member of the board of directors of Kentucky Enterprise Bank.

"He was a Walter Cronkite kind of guy, " said Mr. Hoppenjans' daughter, Barbara McCarthy, of Minneapolis. "Everybody liked him."

Mr. Hoppenjans, 88, of Lakeside Park, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. His wife, Elizabeth C. Hoppenjans, died in 1991.

Mr. Hoppenjans especially enjoyed working in his basement woodworking shop, where he made toys that he donated to schools and charities.

"He was very civic minded, " said Mrs. McCarthy. "He was respected for his integrity and good counsel."

Mr. Hoppenjans also owned horses and enjoyed horseback riding. He also belonged to several gun clubs and was a skeet shooter.

Other survivors include a son, Robert C. Hoppenjans of Lakeside Park; a daughter, Nancy Greer, of Minneapolis; his stepmother, Elizabeth Hoppenjans of Fort Wright; sisters, Martha Edwards of Crestview Hills, Joan Tennefeld of Lexington and Beth Ehlman of Chicago; brothers, Richard Hoppenjans of Sylvania, Ohio, and Donald Hoppenjans of Maryland; and four grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 6 p.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to the Passionist Nuns, 1151 Donaldson Highway, Erlanger, Ky. 41018; or Redwood School and Rehabilitation Center, 71 Orphanage Road, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Betty Jane Rich Bowman, 76, of Walton, died Tuesday at her home.

She was a retired sales clerk with Pogue's department stores.

Her husband, Henry T. Bowman, died in 1972.

Survivors include daughters, Linda Dearing of Florence, Ruth Pelfrey of Union and Darlene Mason of Walton; sons, Larry Bowman of Union and Rich Bowman of Latonia; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence.

Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Billy Eugene Burton, 60, of Crittenden, died Wednesday at Woodspoint Care Center, Florence.

He was a retired maintenance worker with Overhead Door Co. of Northern Kentucky and a member of New Macedonia Regular Baptist Church, Newport.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Turner Burton; his father, Tearl Burton of Elsmere; brothers, Robert Turner of Crittenden, Jeff Turner of Newport and Ronald Peeno of Niland, Calif.; and sisters, Alpha Bowling of Beattyville, Fay Whaley of Hebron, Ida McCormick of Dry Ridge, Ruth Campbell of Crittenden, America Sebastian of Independence and Imogene Stevens of Falmouth.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at New Macedonia Regular Baptist Church, Newport.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the church.

Burial will be in Crittenden Cemetery.

A. Lynn Gaugh, 72, of Elsmere, died Wednesday in St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Walter F. Gill, 73, of Independence, died at 8 p.m. Monday in St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a retired from Liberty Cherry Co., Latonia, and an employee of the Kenton County Golf Course. He was a member of Kenton Baptist Church and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Gill; and a son, Randall Gill of Warren, Mich.

Services will be at noon Saturday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence.

Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Burial will be in Butler Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Beechgrove Baptist Church, 450 Independence Station, Independence, Ky. 41051.

Raymond Stanley Guenther, 83, of Covington, died at 6:47 p.m. Tuesday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia.

He was a retired printer with Arrow Blue Printing Co.

His wife, Dorothy Guenther, died in 1991.

Survivors include daughters, Martha Guenther of Highland Heights and Rayeann Roseberry of Alexandria; a brother, Paul Guenther of Covington; a sister, Virginia Volpenhein of Fort Wright; and a grandson.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Church, Covington.

Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, 745 Main St., Louisville, Ky. 40202; or to Rosedale Manor, 4250 Glenn Ave., Covington, Ky. 41015.

Alexandria Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Ruth Ann Hamm, 67, of Dry Ridge, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a retired nurse's aide with Madonna Manor, Villa Hills.

Survivors include her husband, Delbert Hamm; sons, Delbert Hamm Jr. of Dry Ridge, Danny Hamm of Anderson, Ind., and David Hamm of Lily; daughters, Debbie Jones of Dry Ridge, Ruth Woodcox of Wolcottville, Ind., and Pamela Jacobs of Falmouth; a brother, Leslie Kennedy Jr. of Covington; 27 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Fort Mitchell.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Lucille Tremaine Requardt Hostetter, 97, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Fort Mitchell, died Wednesday at the Inn at Sarasota Bay Club.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger.

William "Bill" Ernest McNeely, 72, of Florence, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital. He was a retired assembler and inspector for Signode Corp.

He was a member of Greenview Baptist Church and Union Masonic Lodge and also an Air Force veteran.

Survivors include his wife Dora E. Reinhart McNeeley of Florence and a brother Robert S. McNeeley of Belleview Bottoms.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. Friday until time of service at the funeral home.

Hazel F. Ries, 85, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was an office worker with Shillitos and Rikes department stores and a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Newport, the church Swannas Club and Southgate Seniors.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Ann Gibson of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Lois Hayden of Woodlawn; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.

Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Robert Leo "P.W." Scherder, 58, of Independence, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

He was a retired engineer with C&O; Railroad and a former member of the Independence Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include a son, George R. Scherder of Independence; daughters, Geneva Marie Shay and Sherry Lynn Deters, both of Walton; a sister, Joanne Cobble of Independence; and five grandchildren.

No services are planned.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.

Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Gerald E. Schneider, 84, of Ludlow, died Tuesday at his home.

He was a self-employed brick mason and a member of St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs.

He was a former member of Teamsters Union Local No. 100, Cincinnati, and a past president of St. Joseph Church's Holy Name Society.

Survivors include his wife, Marcella Maher Schneider; sons, Paul Schneider of Dania, Fla., Gerald Schneider of Inverness, Fla., Edward Schneider and Thomas Schneider, both of Fort Wright, Joseph Schneider of Beavercreek, Ohio, and Philip Schneider of Bromley; daughters, Mary Ruberg of Edgewood, Theresa Schneider Eubanks of Crescent Springs, Patricia Kendall of Erlanger, Rose Schneider of Washington, D.C., and Christine Rider of Taylor Mill; 24 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Church, 2070 Lorraine Court, Crescent Springs, Ky. 41017; or St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Ronald J. Stoudt, 55, of Newport, died Tuesday at Veterans Administration Nursing Home, Fort Thomas.

He was a retired registered nurse with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Cincinnati, a member of Masonic Lodge No. 10 and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include nephews, John Stoudt and Thomas Stoudt, both of Dayton, Ohio.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Spirit Church, Newport.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.
