Albert Dierckes, 87, known for iris plants

At one time, Albert Charles Dierckes had 3, 000 iris plants on his acre of land in Erlanger. But, he didn't keep the beauty all to himself.

"Lots of people -- from Northern Kentucky to Indian Hill -- have iris in their yards that dad gave them, " said Dierckes' son, Albert Dierckes, Jr.

Mr. Dierckes, 87, who died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, had a passion for growing and hybridizing the iris to create unique varieties, and he loved sharing his creations.

"He gave four bushels of iris to a friend of mine who lives in Indian Hill. He just gave them to people -- neighbors, anyone, " Dierckes, Jr., said.

Mr. Dierckes was a former vice president of the American Iris Society and learned how to judge in flower shows, but he still loved the meticulous work of pollinating the flowers and the physical challenge of gardening.

"He had a garden and used that tiller until he was 80 years old, " his son said.

It isn't surprising that his father worked the garden until he was 80, Dierckes, Jr., said. He was a third generation grocery owner and developed a strong work ethic at an early age in his father's store.

"He taught me how to cut up meat and to work by age 13, " Dierckes, Jr., said.

Mr. Dierckes officially went into business with his father in 1935 at age 19. He owned an operated A.B. Dierckes & Son Grocery in Latonia until 1955, but sold the business after it became apparent his son didn't want to continue the grocery business into a fourth generation.

"I saw how hard he worked and didn't want to do it, " Dierckes, Jr., said. He went on to get a doctorate in chemical engineering -- a decision his father fully supported. "He was the inspiration for me."

Since he was used to working hard, long hours -- typically 80 hours a week at his grocery store -- retiring at 40 was more stressful than restful, his son said. He kept busy working as a butcher at Kroger and retired after 20 years with the company.

Mr. Dierckes was a member of St. Mark United Church of Christ in Latonia and a former board member of the Friends of Kenton County Library.

He served in the Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion.
