Bill Dawson, met many people through his work

Bill Dawson's 38 years with Cincinnati Bell started with the flood of 1937.

He was sent to find out whether the houses that needed to be reconnected were actually still there or if they had floated down the Ohio River as it hit 79.9 feet in the worst flood in the city's history.

William C. "Bill" Dawson Sr., 90, of Fort Wright, died of pneumonia at 12:40 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

The retired Cincinnati Bell employee and Lakeside Presbyterian Church elder, was a "tremendously hard worker, " said his daughter, Margaret O'Kain, of University Heights.

He worked as a salesman and installing phone booths for Cincinnati Bell and had earlier worked for Steltencamp Insurance in Covington for his father.

In these two lines of work, he met a lot of people in Northern Kentucky.

"He was an exceedingly kind man. He took a real interest in the people around him and what was going on in their lives."

He was a member of the board of the Covington YMCA and an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Aleutian Islands.

Mr. Dawson kept very fit through frequent visits to the Covington "Y" and was something of a prankster.

"He kind of had a twinkle in his eye. He liked to tell jokes, " his daughter said.

Mr. Dawson's wife, Edna Brown Dawson, died in 2002.

In addition to his daughter, he is survived by a son, William Dawson Jr. of Lexington, Va.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lakeside Presbyterian Church. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Lakeside Presbyterian Church, 2690 Dixie Highway, Lakeside Park, Ky. 41017. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Henry George Anthonissen, 86, of Alexandria, died at 2:15 a.m. Saturday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. He was a driver and salesman with Elgin Honeyhill Wholesale Dairy in Chicago and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Esther G. Anthonissen; a son, Paul Carl Anthonissen of San Jose, Calif.; a brother, Raymond Anthonissen of Independence; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. Memorials are suggested to Baptist Convalescent Center, 120 Main St., Newport, Ky. 41071. Alexandria Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

M. Joan Arnold, 71, of Alexandria, died at 12:02 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur Edward Arnold; sons, Jeffrey Arnold of Crescent Springs, Larry Arnold of Jonesboro, Ga., and Michael Arnold of Wilder; daughters, Nancy Kehoe of Crestview and Amy Verst of Cold Spring; a brother, Jerry Schoo of Southgate; a sister, Florence Weller of Cincinnati; and 12 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Barbara D. Bowdy, 69, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a registered nurse, a reader with the Cincinnati Association for the Blind and a foster mother with Catholic Social Services.

Survivors include her husband, William W. Bowdy; daughters, Valerie A. Caudill of Lexington and Mary Kathryn Cox of Union; sons, William B. Bowdy of Hebron, Bruce D. Bowdy and Matthew A. Bowdy, both of Lexington; her mother, Gertrude Dunlavey of Port Huron, Mich.; a sister, Kathleen Corbett of Port Huron; and grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Guillain-Barr� Syndrome Foundation International, P.O. Box 262, Wynnewood, Pa. 19096; or Cincinnati Association for the Blind, 2045 Gilbert Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45202.

Janice Lee Huesman Brady, 41, of Florence, died at 9:49 p.m. Friday in Union. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, James N. Brady; daughters, Amber Lee Brady and Megan Marie Brady, both of Florence; a son, James N. Brady of Florence; a sister, Barb H. Singleton of Cold Spring; her mother, Aretta Miller Huesman of Fort Thomas; and grandmother, Aretta Hoess of Highland Heights.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Cremation will be at Southwest Ohio Crematory, Milford, Ohio. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Margaret "Peg" Brown, 82, of Fort Thomas, died at 8:35 a.m. Friday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church, Fort Thomas. She was a member of the church Mothers Club, Bridge Club and Altar Society, and was a member of the Newport Catholic Mothers Club. Her husband, Robert E. Brown, died in 1999.

Survivors include daughters, Sheila Jones, Karen Hasson and Amy Vories, all of Fort Thomas, Bonnie Wallenhorst of Southgate and Judy McMahon of Union; sons, Michael Brown of Fort Thomas and Stevan Brown of Crestview; a brother, Charles W. Rutheford of Columbus, Ohio; 23 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Mrs. Brown donated her body to science. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45203; or Baptist Convalescent Center, 210 Main St., Newport, Ky. 41071. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Charles "Shorty" D. Gibson, 69, of Alexandria, died Saturday at his home. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife, Fran Gibson; sons, David Gibson and Darrin Gibson, both of Butler, John "Pickett" Gibson of Demossville and Jeff King of Alexandria; daughters, Beth Cahill and Wendy Rogers, both of Butler, Becky Bush of Falmouth and Jennifer Lackey of Cold Spring; a brother, Everett Gibson of Fort Thomas; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler. Visitation will begin there at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Butler Cemetery.

Edith C. Hobbs, 84, of Fort Thomas, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a doctor's assistant.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family. A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Ernest W. Hobday, 96, of Cynthiana, died Saturday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. He was a retired farmer and a member of Salem Church of Christ.

Survivors include a sister, Mae Hobday Florence of Harrison County, and a nephew.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Carl T. Kelly, 81, of Beaufort, S.C., formerly of Covington, died Saturday at Bayview Nursing Center in Beaufort. He was a retired postal worker and an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Edith Kleier Kelly; sons, Kevin T. Kelly of Ludlow and Thomas M. Kelly of Stedman, N.C.; daughters, Karen M. Tharp of Beaufort, Colleen Woolley of Pearl City, Hawaii, and Christine A. Kelly of Taylor Mill; and three grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter Church, Beaufort. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Anderson Funeral Home, Beaufort. Burial will be in Beaufort National Cemetery.

Barbara Lauer, 75, of Erlanger, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a sales clerk with Lazarus department stores and a member of Florence Christian Church.

Survivors include sons, Michael Kenton of Erlanger and Ron Lauer of Colorado; brothers, Richard Marston and John Marston, both of Cincinnati; sisters, Pat Jones and Josephine Morton, both of Cincinnati; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Arlington Memorial Gardens, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Florence Christian Church, 300 Main St., Florence, Ky. 41042.

Thomas W. Miller, 90, of Hebron, died at 9:25 p.m. Thursday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. He was a retired bricklayer with George E. Detzel Co. and a member of International Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union and First Baptist Church of Milford, Ohio. His wife, Lois Nevil Miller, died in 1980.

Survivors include a son, Thomas N. Miller of Cincinnati; daughters, Judy A. Moher of Alexandria and Carolyn Foux of Lumberton, Texas; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Spring Grove cemetery Chapel, Cincinnati. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Entombment will be in Spring Grove Mausoleum, Cincinnati. Norma Elizabeth Ockerman, 73, of Verona, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Ockerman; daughters, Joyce Ockerman of Florence and Shelley Dunhoft of Verona; sons, Dick Ockerman of Florence and Rob Ockerman of Verona; sisters, Ruth Danks and Juanita Ransdell, both of Erlanger; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Sylvia M. Poston, 58, of Erlanger, died at 7:05 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired nurse technician with St. John Nursing Home, Covington, and a member of St. Benedict Church, Covington.

Survivors include her husband, Larry Poston; sons, Duane Poston of Covington and David Poston of Erlanger; a daughter, Donna Poston of Erlanger; a brother, Ronnie Maloney of Ryland Heights; a sister, Brenda Kahrs of Covington; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Cremation will be at Southwest Ohio Crematory, Milford, Ohio. Barbara Jean Ruttencutter-Dean, 66, of Erlanger, died at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a retired supervisor with Choice Care Humana, Cincinnati. Her husband, Jack E. Dean, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Alan Ruttencutter of Sevierville, Tenn., and Kurt Ruttencutter of Burlington; a daughter, Lynn Boone of Fort Mitchell; stepsons, John Dean of Taylor Mill, Jim Dean and Joe Dean, both of Fort Thomas; stepdaughters, Mary Knoll of Bellevue, Sue Clayton of Fort Thomas and Ann Liles of Newport; sisters, Ginny Lehnhoff of Kettering, Ohio, and Delores Webb of Taylor Mill; a brother, Daniel Humphrey of Sanders; five grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Thomas R. Shea, 64, of Park Hills, died at 5 a.m. Saturday at his home. He was a retired worker with White Castle Restaurants, a member of St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright and an Army veteran.

Survivors include a sister, Delores Smith of Corbin, nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Agnes Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Lucille Eleanor Stephens, 93, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of East Bend Baptist Church, Boone County. Her husband, Crutchfield Stephens, died in 1988. A daughter, Jane Stephens, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Benny Stephens of Crittenden and George Stephens of Union; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery.

Lillian L. Thomas, 93, of Warsaw, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Paint Lick Baptist Church, Warsaw. Her husband, Ralph Leroy Thomas, died in 1982.

Survivors include daughters, O'Vida Faye Young of Walton and Barbara Ann Jones of Oiltrough, Ark.; sons, Ralph Thomas Jr. of Warsaw, Donald S. Thomas of Patriot, Ind., and Harold W. Thomas of Worthville; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Paint Lick Baptist Church, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Burial will be in Paint Lick Cemetery, Warsaw.

Jenny M. Wartman, 48, of Ludlow, died Saturday at her home. She was an outside technician with Cincinnati Bell and a member of Communication Workers of American Local No. 4400, Cincinnati.

Survivors include sons, Austin Renner and Jacob Renner, both at home; brothers, Jake Wartman and Lou Wartman, both of Fort Wright, Tim Wartman, Chris Wartman and Frank Wartman, all of Bromley, and Larry Wartman of Ludlow; sisters, Peggy McAllister of Cincinnati, Susan Duncan of New Richmond, Ohio, Mary Fangman of Fort Wright and Diane Wartman of Burlington.

Services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 10901 Reed Hartman Highway, Cincinnati, Ohio Cincinnati, Ohio 45242.
