'Sam' Beighle, known for stories, generosity

Charles Samuel "Sam" Beighle lived a full 87 years, and he loved to tell others about it.

"That's what we're all going to miss about him, his stories, " said his daughter, Joan K. Smith of Union.

Mr. Beighle, who died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, had lots of stories to tell.

He talked of climbing Pike's Peak on a mule with his grand-father when he was 12. He talked of growing up in rural Pendleton County, where he helped his father herd turkeys onto the train for the market in Cincinnati.

He talked of earning extra money by driving a school bus, while he was still in school. He served as the president of his graduating class at Butler High School in 1934.

If not a born entrepreneur, Mr. Beighle learned quickly.

His first business was a general store in Piner in 1939. He also drove a bus full of goods through Pendleton and Kenton counties, selling food and fabric to farm wives.

Later, he and his brothers owned Beighle Brothers IGA stores in Walton, Dry Ridge, Carrollton and Owenton.

Mr. Beighle was known for his generosity, his daughter said.

He sometimes bought cars for hard-working employees who couldn't afford them, she said, and he also saved one employee's house for her.

"He was notorious about picking up hitchhikers and buying them shoes and a bus ticket, " Smith said.

In 1999, he moved to the Baptist Village in Erlanger because of de-clining health and to be closer to his daughter. Even in his last year, he still handled his own investments in the stock market, she said.

Mr. Beighle was a member of Gardnersville Baptist Church and Wilmington Masonic Lodge. He co-owned a farm in Crittenden.

Besides his daughter, survivors include his wife, Martha J. Westerkamp Beighle; a sister, Elsie Ervin of Crittenden; brothers, Ed Beighle of Williamstown, Paul Beighle of Verona, Truett Beighle of Florence and Monty Beighle of Crittenden; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
