William O. Noel, 91, WWII vet and farmer

Just into his seventh decade, William Oakley Noel found he had a lot more living to do.

His first wife had died about a year before. At the Ten Mile Baptist Church, where he was a member, the Glencoe resident met Mae Simpson, whose husband had also died.

They started to date and were married in October 1982.

"I needed help financially. He needed someone to cook and have a home for him. I think we grew to love each other after we were married, " said Mrs. Noel. "I think we had more of an admiration for each other (at first), because we were both up in years."

They stayed married until Mr. Noel died Wednesday in St. Luke West Hospital in Florence. He was 91.

He farmed most of his life, until he could no longer do the work. Then he passed the farm on to his son, Merle Noel of Verona.

The World War II Army veteran served for 31 years on the board of directors of the Owen County RECC, missing only one meeting, and that because he was in the hospital.

"He was a very quiet man. He just kind of enjoyed life. He enjoyed his farming and taking trips for training (for the RECC), " his widow said.

"Sometimes we would just sit on the porch and enjoy the day, " she said. "He would mow the lawn, and I would work in my flowers."

Surviving, in addition to his wife and son, are James E. Beach of Florida, Michael E. Beach of Lexington, David R. Beach of Mosby Creek and Robert H. Beach of Glencoe; a brother, J.C.
