Kenetha Diane Beach, 23, dreamed of being a teacher
Kenetha Diane Beach got to live her dream for 19 days.

Ms. Beach, 23, of Dry Ridge, had always wanted to be a teacher -- as far back as when she was a student at Crittenden-Mount Zion Elementary School in Dry Ridge.

After graduating from Berea College last May, she was hired to teach second-graders at the school.

In August, she taught for 19 days before an unknown lung disease forced her to leave.

"Teaching was her life. It's all she talked about since she was a little girl, " said her aunt, Pam McClure of Dry Ridge.

"All the time she was sick, she just wanted to get back to her classroom."

Ms. Beach was initially incorrectly diagnosed with a range of maladies before doctors discovered her illness had led to an enlarged heart. To fight the still unknown lung disease, they wanted to do a biopsy, but her heart condition made the surgery dangerous. Wednesday, as doctors prepared for surgery at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, she died.

"She was an amazing person to know, " said McClure.

"From the beginning, she said 'No crying, no negative thoughts.' Never once did I see her cry, not once."

Survivors include her parents, Timothy G. and Sharon D. Colson Beach of Dry Ridge; brothers, Tim Beach II, Ty Andrew Beach and Bo Dexter Beach, all of Dry Ridge; a sister, Tiffany Danielle Beach of Dry Ridge; and grandparents, Jesse and Mandola Colson of Corinth and Marvin and Opal Beach of Dry Ridge.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Mount Zion Baptist Church, Dry Ridge.

Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Memorials are suggested to Kenetha Beach Memorial Scholarship Fund For Aspiring Teachers, in care of Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 130, Williamstown, Ky. 41097.

Dr. Howard Ravenscraft, known as a hard worker

Dr. Howard Lee "Doc" Ravenscraft was known as a hard worker, one who toiled 12 hours a day for most of his career.

His parents determined during the Great Depression that their children would become financially stable, said his wife, Joyce Prall Ravenscraft.

"They had the attitude that, if you keep children busy, they won't get into trouble, " she said.

"All three of their sons have had multiple jobs simultaneously. Howard had jobs from the time he was in elementary school.

"And he learned to work on the family farm in Grant County raising sheep and tobacco."

Dr. Ravenscraft died at 2:23 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was 72.

When he began practicing medicine in 1956, he opened offices in Covington and Hebron.

In addition to his general practice at both offices, he also did obstetrics, anesthesia and minor surgery.

By 1979, he had a partner in his Hebron practice, Mrs. Ravenscraft said, which gave him a little extra time.

"So he entered Chase Law School and graduated after four years of night school, " she said.

He never practiced law, but was a consultant in medical malpractice cases, testifying for plaintiffs or defendants as he believed the facts warranted.

He was a part owner of BooneAire Country Club.

His hobbies were overseeing the work on his farms in Warsaw and Hebron.

"He was not a vacation person -- he would take us on vacation once a year, but he was always itching to get back, " Mrs. Ravenscraft said.

"He was a bit of a workaholic."

After retirement, he devoted his time to writing his autobiography, doing genealogical research and researching other topics in the Boone County Public Library.

Other survivors include daughters, Krista Goldberg of St. Charles, Ill., Valerie Bowen of Lawrenceburg, Ind., Natalie Henrichsen of Glendale, Ariz., and Janelle Smedley of Hayward, Wis.; sons, David Ravenscraft of Anthem, Ariz., and Bruce Ravenscraft of Austin, Texas; brothers, Jack Ravenscraft of Florence and Dale Ravenscraft of Louisville; and nine grandchildren.
