Don Duckworth, 67, loved playing, coaching sports
Don D. Duckworth had an infectious smile and a laid back temperament. He loved watching, coaching and playing sports.

Mr. Duckworth 67, of Crescent Springs, died at 5:50 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He grew up in upstate New York, in the community of Morristown, where his father worked as a border patrol officer.

"Both of his parents were in government work, so they traveled a great deal, " said his son, David Duckworth of Deerfield Township, Ohio.

The family ended up settling in Lexington, where Mr. Duckworth attended Henry Clay High School and the University of Kentucky. While there he also worked six years for the Lexington Police Department.

In the early 1970s, Mr. Duckworth moved his family to Northern Kentucky, where he worked as a salesman for Puritan Chemicals. He later founded and served as president of Terminal Plus in Erlanger.

Mr. Duckworth coached his three sons in baseball, basketball and football, but his real sports love was golf. He was a long time member of the United States Golf Association, former member of Summit Hills Country Club and Villa Hills Golf League.

"He loved playing golf and before he became ill he played two or three times a week, " David Duckworh said.

Mr. Duckworth also was a member of the Villa Hills Civic Club.

He had heart bypass surgery about 10 years ago, recovered, but became ill about two years ago. His death was attributed to an apparent heart attack.

"He was a great guy, " David Duckworth said. "Laid back and always ready to smile."

Mr. Duckworth was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

In addition to his son, survivors include his wife, Carolyn C. Thornton Duckworth; sons, Kent Duckworth and Don Duckworth, both of Crescent Springs; and seven grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Cremation will be at Southwest Ohio Crematory, Milford, Ohio. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, 45219.

Celsi Marie Brown, 9 days, died Thursday at Children's Hospital, Cincinnati.

Survivors include her parents, Clifton Brown and Kristi Covington, both of Crescent Springs; a brother, Clifton Brown II at home; and maternal grandparents, Linda Austin of Verona and Dennis Covington of Erlanger.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling the arrangements.

Edna Mae Herb, 80, of Middletown, Ohio, formerly of Fort Thomas, died at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Garden Manor Nursing Home, Middletown.

Arrangements are pending at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.

Edith Marcum New, 51, of Elsmere, died at 11:10 a.m. Thursday at her home.

She was a delivery person for Mike Sells Potato Chip Co.

Survivors include her husband, Artie New; a son, Ricky Lee of Taylor Mill; a daughter, Tonya Karn of Burlington; stepdaughters, Linda Kidwell of Independence, Sandra Justice of Hebron and Patty Dietz of Elsmere; brothers, Thomas Marcum of Ocala, Fla., and Dewey Barkhau and Jab Thompson, both of Bellevue; sisters, Mareitta Bishop of Manchester and Corrina Britton of Covington; nine grandchildren and seven stepgrandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn cemetery Mausoleum, Erlanger.

Mattie Gay Rice, 72, of Southgate, died Friday at her home. She was a custodian for Newport Schools. Her husband, Bernis "Chick" Rice, died in 1984.

Survivors include sons, Bernis Paul Rice of North Carolina and Jerry Rice of Newport; daughters, Barbara Martin of Southgate, Connie Gorman of Fort Thomas and Pamela Underwood of Newport; a brother, Carl Estep of California; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Butler Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075; or Newport Schools, 301 E. 8th St., Newport, Ky. 41071.

Peoples Funeral Home, Butler, is handling the arrangements.

Clair Henry Sheldon, 88, of Dayton, formerly of Niagara Falls, N.Y., died Friday at Highlands of Fort Thomas. He was an instrument repairman for Hooker Chemical Co., Niagra Falls, a member of American Legion, Niagara Falls, and a World War II Army veteran. His wife, Grace Sheldon, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his son, Al W. Sheldon of Dayton; and a grandson.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation will be at Southwest Ohio Crematory, Milford, Ohio.

James R. "Hank" Tipton, 67, of Newport, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired demolition wrecker for Ralph Chilelli Construction Co., Campbell County.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Tipton; daughters, Ruby Tipton of Newport and Kathy Sparks of Silver Grove; sons, Ozzie Tipton and James E. Tipton, both of Newport; sisters, Faye Christian and Dot Lipscomb, both of Newport; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Doris Vivian Roach Waddell, 94, of Covington, died at 1:08 p.m. Thursday Village Care Center, Erlanger. She was a retired seamstress with Burkhardt's Men's Clothing Store, Cincinnati, and a member of Southside Baptist Church, Covington, and the W.M.U. and Golden Years, both at Southside Baptist Church. Her husband, William Waddell, died in 1979.

Survivors include his son, Jack Cook of Edgewood; a daughter, Kathleen Carter of Muncie, Ind.; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Monday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 2011 Madison Road, O'Bryanville, Ohio 45208.

Violet Rose Schachere Wright, 77, of Dayton, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a former medical transcriber for the VA Hospital, Fort Thomas, and a former sales clerk for Shillito's Department Store, Cincinnati. Her husband, Edward Wright Sr., died in 1974.

Survivors include sons, Gerald Sproehnle of Newport, James Sproehnle of Latonia, John Sproehnle of Loveland, Ohio, and Edward Wright Jr. of Alexandria; a daughter, Kathy Sproehnle of Grants Lick; nine grandchildren and three great-grand-<243>children.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue.

Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Church, 318 Division St., Bellevue, Ky. 41073.
