Harry York, 82, retired steel worker

Harry Theodore York was a "good country man" who opened his home to his family members any time they needed it.

"If you wanted to stay a night, or you wanted to stay six months, he didn't care, " said his daughter, Nona Brewer of Taylor Mill.

Mr. York, who died Monday at his home in Covington, opened his home to his son and his family in September 1996, then saved them from a fire that swept through his house early on the morning of Sept. 16 that year.

He told The Post then that he woke up about 2:30 a.m. and saw a glow coming from the pump room at the back of his farmhouse, which overlooked the Licking River near Ryland.

He yelled for his family to get out, and tried to put the fire out. But the pump was already damaged, and he could draw no water from the cistern.

The house and contents were destroyed, but Mr. York saved his son, daughter-in-law and their three grandchildren.

Mr. York, 82, was a retired steel worker at Newport Steel, where everyone called him "Sarge" because he served as a sergeant in the Army during World War II.

An avid angler and hunter, he owned a coon hound that won a world championship in Arkansas in the late 1950s, his daughter said. He also loved the Cincinnati Reds and the Kentucky Wildcats.

He was a member of the Grand Avenue Church of God, Latonia. "He was an honest, upstanding man, well admired by everyone who knew him, " Brewer said.
