Willard 'Bill' Hehman enjoyed having fun

Willard H. "Bill" Hehman was a man who liked to have fun in life, and often enlisted the assistance of his six children to help him do so.

When his three sons and three daughters were very young, he would amuse them by taking out his teeth. "Then he'd say, 'Let's see you try that!'" said his daughter, Mary Ann Steffen of Wilder.

Her father lost half his left index finger in an accident at his job as a tool and die maker, and sometimes when his kids were watching, he'd put the stump into his nose, making it appear like his entire finger was up his nostril. "He didn't have to tell us to try that, " Steffen said. "He knew we would on our own."

Mr. Hehman, of Highland Heights, died Wednesday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was 91.

His sense of humor might have been at least partly hereditary. His parents named him "Willard" because he was born on Dec. 1, Steffen said. "They said, 'Just like a Bill, due on the first day of the month, '" she said.

He liked to take his children to get candy at Federle's, a now defunct store in Newport. "He loved to get my sister black licorice, because she liked that, " Steffen said. "Then she'd be a mess afterward."

Mr. Hehman worked for about 45 years as a tool and die master, first at Grote Manufacturing (later Kent Corp.) in Bellevue, then later National Band and Tag in Newport, from which he retired at age 70. "He wanted to make sure he got his full retirement, " Steffen said.

In his youth, Mr. Hehman played baseball for the Rough Riders team in the west end of Newport. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Newport chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Legion of Honor.

He and his wife, Florence, moved to Florida after he retired, but returned to Northern Kentucky when his health began to fail. He had Parkinson's Disease and diabetes, among other ailments, said Steffen.

Surviving in addition to his wife and daughter are two other daughters, Jeannette Edwards of Falmouth and Alice Jones of Cold Spring; sons, Bill Hehman of Fort Thomas, Cletus Hehman of Robertdale, Ala., and LeLand Hehman of Farmington Hills, Mich.; a sister, Catherine Bush of Wilder; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
