John Holladay, loved farming and horses

If John C. Holladay could have farmed all the time, that's what he would have done.

But the Burlington resident, who died Saturday at age 80, had to work off the farm to make ends meet. For almost 30 years, he did ramp service for TWA Airlines, often at night.

During the day, he would raise cattle, hay and tobacco, plus bale hay commercially. He met many people through cattle sales and through showing cattle at the Boone County Fair.

"Until the county started growing, he knew practically everyone in Boone County, " said his daughter, Phyllis Jean Anderson of Petersburg.

He passed on a love of horses to his children. He always made sure they got to ride, in trail rides, parades and 4-H shows.

"Our recreation was the horses, " Anderson said.

Until about a year ago, when his health declined, he was very active in the Hebron Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

"He was a wonderful person to know, " his daughter said. "He would give you the shirt off his back."
