William McElhinney, caring doctor

Dr. William Thomas McElhinney had a reputation for caring more about his patients than about the business end of his medical practice.

"He'd send out one bill -- if no payment came back, that was the end of it, " said Tom McElhinney of Covington, a son.

"In the '50s and '60s, when most people didn't have medical insurance, he was mindful of that. And he never billed a minister, a priest or a nun. He might have collected a third of what he actually earned.

"His example showed us he cared more about caring for people than dollars."

Dr. McElhinney, of Fort Thomas, died Dec. 18 at home. He was 87.

Dr. McElhinney grew up in rural Iowa, attended the University of Iowa on a pole-vaulting scholarship and graduated from the Medical School at the University of Iowa in 1939. He married his college sweetheart, Ruth Ludwigson, and remained married for 63 years.

Ten years ago, when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, he took care of her. For six of those years, she was bedridden.

"He would tell us he was down to one patient, " Tom McElhinney said. "He'd say, `Ruthie's my last patient.'"

He came to Greater Cincinnati in 1939 to take an internship at Cincinnati General Hospital. During World War II, he was a Group Flight Surgeon in the United States Air Corps with the 479th fighter group stationed in England.

In 1948, he became chief resident of surgery at UC and launched his private practice of surgery in Northern Kentucky the following year. He was admitted to the American College of Surgeons in 1951.

Dr. McElhinney was on the board of directors for the Covington YMCA for 10 years, deacon at the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church for six years and an instructor of surgery at UC from 1945 to '60.

From 1964 to '68, he was chief of surgery at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Covington, and chief of surgery at the old Booth Hospital in Covington for two years until 1972.

He was involved with "Call the Doctor, " a program sponsored by the Cincinnati Surgical Society, from 1965 to 1975. He also served as track doctor at Turfway Park in Florence.
