Richard Gordon, former editor

Like many reporters, Richard Gordon often found himself working for editors who got grumpy if he did not get every story first, every time.

In the days when Cincinnati was a three-daily newspaper town, Mr. Gordon, then business editor of The Post, frequently had to fend off the complaints from his managing editor over why The Times-Star always seemed to break the big business stories.

"How come we can't get the break on some of these stories?" the managing editor fumed. "What can we do?"

"Change your name to Taft, " Mr. Gordon suggested.

His boss, Mr. Gordon noted succinctly, "did not appreciate that."

During his nearly quarter-century with The Post, however, his bosses, much more often than not, did appreciate the humor and stories produced by Mr. Gordon, who died Sunday at 85.

In between two stints with The Post that stretched from the 1940s into the 1980s, the Illinois native also was editor of Cincinnati Magazine, and public relations director of Northlich Stolley Inc. and the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce.

After starting as a reporter at The Post in 1946, Mr. Gordon moved through other positions that included - in addition to business editor - assistant city editor, columnist and ombudsman.

When he left The Post in 1956, he went into public relations, "which most newsmen think pays fabulously, " he said. But whatever the financial benefits, Mr. Gordon eventually found that a public relations office was a poor substitute for a newsroom in terms of psychic rewards.

"When you leave a paper that has become such a large part of your life, it tears you up, " he said.

So he returned to The Post in 1973 - by which time the paper had acquired the Taft family-owned Times-Star - and the paper remained part of his life until he retired in 1986.

Mr. Gordon - whose wife, Helen, is deceased - is survived by three children, Jan Gordon, Carol Howe and Gary Gordon.
