Michael Farney, owned auto repair business

The late Michael Robert Farney liked to tell stories and jokes, and he told them well, said his widow, Mary Lynn Sledd Farney.

"He laughed like it was the first time he'd heard it himself, when he told it, " she said.

Mr. Farney, who died Friday at age 54, was an outgoing man who never met a stranger, she said. You would never meet a more honest man, she said.

She met her spouse of 22 years the day after his return home from serving in the Vietnam War. They worked across the street from each other, he at his family's Farney's Auto Service Inc. at 40th Street and Decoursey Avenue in Latonia, she at the former Kim's Hair Fashions.

Someone had set fire to the beauty shop, and Mr. Farney came over to see the damage, his widow said. The crime was never solved.

Mr. Farney of Crestview Hills, died at 9 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was the owner of Farney's Auto Service Inc., Latonia, where he had worked since he was 9.

He was a member of St. Stephen Episcopal Church in Latonia. He was a past president of the Beechgrove Lions Club and a member of Kenton Game and Fish Club, the National Rifle Association and Amateur Trap Shooting Association. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, and a member of Patrol Boat Riverine Force Veterans Association.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lynn Sledd Farney; a daughter, Jennifer Farney of Bellevue; his father, Robert G. Farney of Covington; and a sister, Patricia Farney of Burlington.

Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen Episcopal Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Memorials are suggested to St. Stephen Episcopal Church, 212 E. 39th St., Covington, Ky. 41015; or Taylor Mill Lions Club, P.O. Box 15377, Covington, Ky. 41015.

James Henry Boone, 83, of Minerva, died Saturday at his home. He was a farmer, an elder with Germantown Christian Church and a World War II veteran. He was a chairman of the church board and planning committee and a church trustee. He also taught Sunday school, and helped establish the Maysville Church of Christ. His wife, Ethel Beckett Boone, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Stitt of Minerva; brothers, William Boone of Minerva, Edward Boone of Dayton, Ohio, and Mahlon Boone of North Carolina; a sister, Rose Berry of Maysville; a grandson and a great-granddaughter.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hope, 909 Kenton Station Drive, Maysville, Ky. 41056.

Mary Louise Boudreau, 90, of Cynthiana, died Saturday at Edgemont Manor Nursing Home in Cynthiana. She was a retired teacher and a member of Cynthiana Christian Church.

Survivors include a brother, Joseph M. Barnes of Harrison County, and a sister, Lockey Palermo of La Mesa, Calif.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will begin there at 9 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to Flora Shropshire Animal Shelter, New Lair Road, Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.

Jenna Sargent Brown, 64, of Union, died Sunday at her home. She was a billing clerk with Yellow Freight Systems, Lexington and a member of Erlanger Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Brown; a daughter, Sherri Brown Mauntel of Erlanger; sons, Barry Brown of Erlanger and Randy Brown of Florence; sisters, Patsy Smith of Taylor Mill and Jewell Smith of Crestview Hills; a brother, Cecil "Buck" Sargent of Dry Ridge; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Erlanger Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery. Dorothy Mary Brown, 74, of Highland Heights, died at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Robert E. Brown, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Debby Chaplin of Grants Lick, Gail Schultz of Alexandria and Vickie Steffen of Highland Heights; sons, Gary Brown of Foster and Jeff Brown of Alexandria; a sister, Mary Ann Estes of Milford; a brother, Clifford Brown of Cincinnati; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Arthritis Foundation, 7811 Laurel Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45243.

Sally Neace Collins, 77, of Williamstown, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown. She was a homemaker and a member of White Dove Regular Baptist Church, Williamstown. Her husband, Rev. Higa Collins, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Arthur Collins and David Collins, both of Williamstown; sisters, Grace Wilson of Colonial Heights, Va., Freida Wallace of Petersburg, Va., and Connie Collins of Louisville; a brother, Garrett Neace of Franklin, Ohio; five grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Corinth. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Homer M. Ely, 74, of Demossville, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired heavy equipment operator with the Kentucky Highway Department in Kenton County and a member of Kenton Full Gospel Church, Kenton. His wife, Dorothy Ely, died in 2001.

Survivors include sons, Chuck Ely of Maineville, Ohio, and Terry R. Ely of Union; brothers, George Ely and John Ely, both of Virginia, and Lennis Ely of Ohio; sisters, Marie Lands of Ohio, Wathina Kirk and Shirley Alexander, both of Indiana; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 6 p.m. today at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Cooper Funeral Home, and from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Province Funeral Home, Pennington. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Woodway, Va.

James Thomas "Tom" Ficke, 86, of Latonia, died at 5 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired assembler with the G.A. Gray Co. in Norwood, Ohio, a member of Holy Cross Church in Latonia and an Army veteran of World War II. He also helped organize the Blue & Gold Little League baseball league in Latonia.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Marie Costello Ficke; sons, Jerry T. Ficke of Villa Hills and Randy J. Ficke of Lakeside Park; daughters, Janice M. Kleem of Villa Hills, Linda L. Nageleisen of Edgewood, Debbie A. Schmidt of Edgewood and Kathleen D. Hartke of Covington; a brother, Henry Ficke of Buena Vista, Calif.; sisters, Veronica Judy and Grace Lee Young, both of Frankfort; and 16 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Tuesday at Holy Cross Church, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Life League, P.O. Box 1350, Stafford, Va. 22555; or Holy Cross Church, 3612 Church St., Covington, Ky. 41015. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Beverly Flannery, 67, of Villa Hills, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington.

Ross Florence, 78, of Cynthiana, died Friday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. He was a retired employee of the Eaton Foundry in Harrison County, a retired farmer and a member of Cynthiana Christian Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Frances McCay Florence; daughters, Joyce McDaniel of Harrison County and Gena Cornett of Scott County; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 508 E. Pike St., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.

Jack Ford, 78, of Covington, died at 4:30 a.m. Saturday at his home. He was a retired clerk with Bearings Inc., Cincinnati, and a member of St. Augustine Church, Covington. He was a member of the Path Finders Club at the church.

Survivors include his wife, Margie Ford; sons, Tom Ford and Mike Ford, both of Crestview Hills; and six grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Augustine Church, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Entombment will be in Mother of God Mausoleum, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to St. Augustine Church, 1839 Euclid Ave., Covington, Ky. 41014. Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Virginia Hudepohl Hallbach, 86, of Fort Thomas, died Saturday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker, an owner of Hallbach Kitchen and Equipment in Bellevue and a member of Holy Spirit Church, Newport. Her husband, Arnold Hallbach, died in 1997.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Dady of Bellevue and Joan Schoettelkotte of Edgewood; sons, Arnold Hallbach of Shandon, Ohio, and Ray Hallbach of Villa Hills; brothers, Robert Hudepohl and Paul Hudepohl, both of Fort Thomas; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Spirit Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Carmel Manor Family Garden, 100 Carmel Manor Road, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Cathy Lea, 43, of Cincinnati, died Friday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Bethany Adkins of Bellevue; a son, Buddy Wayne Trent of Cincinnati; and a grandchild.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Cathy Lea Memorial Fund, in care of Dobbling Funeral Home, 241 Fairfield Ave., Ky. 41073. Dobbling Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Edna "Dolly" Marksberry, 85, of Dry Ridge, died Sunday at Grant Manor Nursing Home, Williamstown.

Arrangements are pending at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.

Samantha Louise Miller, 37, of Sanders, died Friday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Carl Miller, and a sister, Tina Owens of Ghent.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery.

Mildred Irene Park, 81, of Villa Hills, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a hairdresser and manicurist with Gladys Fuller's Beauty Salon and a member of Crescent Springs Presbyterian Church. Her husband, John F. Park, died in 1978.

Survivors include daughters, Donna Diehl of Villa Hills and Gail Kerns of Morrow, Ohio; a grandchild, and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014; or Crescent Springs Presbyterian Church Choir, 710 Western Reserve Road, Crescent Springs, Ky. 41017. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Leroy C. Schaefer, 83, of Dayton, died at 6:30 a.m. Friday at his home. He was a retired welder with Ford Motor Co., a member of Lawler-Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662, Newport, and a Navy veteran. His wife, Kathleen Schaefer, died in 1973.

Survivors include daughters, Joy Smith of Dayton, Sandie Lucas of Cincinnati and Barbara Jones of Alexandria; a son, Roy Schaefer of Dayton; a sister, Vera Rechtin of Highland Heights; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Hwy., Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Charlotte Ballard Shanks, 61, of Dry Ridge, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Clark's Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Jim Shanks; a daughter, Julie Lynn Elliott of Florence; sons, Jimmy Shanks and William Shanks, both of Dry Ridge; a sister, Linda Cull of Dry Ridge; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Edgar V. "Bud" Wilson, 82, of Glencoe, died at 5:38 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a member of Immanuel Methodist Church, Fort Mitchell, a former member of the Kenton County Board of Education, and coached Pee-Wee basketball in Northern Kentucky. He was a former basketball team manager with the University of Kentucky. His first wife, Jacqueline Wilson, died in 1981. His second wife, Ruth Wilson, died in 1999. A son, Jimmy Wilson, died in 1978.

Survivors include daughters, Patricia Petzinger of Owenton and Linda Campbell of Fresno, Calif.; stepsons, Christopher Metz of Ashland, Doug Metz of Cincinnati and Steve Metz of Raleigh, N.C.; stepdaughters, Tori Reinke of Glencoe and Marcy Hayes of Cincinnati; five grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at noon Tuesday.

Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
