'Pete' Headley, jockey, won over 400 races

Owen "Pete" Headley started riding horses as a teen in the early '50s and was still at it nearly 50 years later, just a few days before he died at age 67 on Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.

For most of those years - from 1953 to 1987 - he was a jockey, riding at thoroughbred tracks in the South, Midwest and Northeast. He won more than 400 races, said his wife, Georgia, and was a former meet leader at River Downs in Cincinnati.

After he retired from race riding, he spent a decade as a jockey's agent, then after he retired in 1997 he exercised horses at local tracks.

"That was mostly to support his golf habit, " said a daughter, Roxanne Argenbright, of New Richmond, Ohio.

One of the best mounts he had was during his apprenticeship, when he was the first rider on Cickle's Image, which later was a stakes winner, said Georgia Headley.

Mr. Headley rode at major tracks like Churchill Downs, Keeneland, Gulfstream Park and the Fairgrounds in New Orleans.

His love was not confined to equines, his family said: He loved people, too.

"He was interested in people, always doing small kindnesses for them, " said his wife.

"He was like a kid, friendly, " said Argenbright. "He made friends no matter where he went."
