Joy Anna Moore, 82, enjoyed life and people

Joy Anna Moore of Covington and her husband, Virgil, were on their way to his hometown in central Minnesota to attend the dedication of a veterans war memorial bearing his name when she was killed in a car crash outside Indianapolis.

After his 82-year-old wife died Friday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Mr. Moore had to scrap plans for the dedication ceremony in Long Prairie, Minn., to make funeral arrangements for her.

Mrs. Moore was born and reared in San Francisco and earned a degree in home economics at the University of California at Berkley.

Virgil Moore, who was in the National Guard before being called to active duty in the Army during World War II, was stationed in San Francisco when he met his future wife on a blind date. The couple married in 1943.

Mrs. Moore enjoyed water and loved to travel extensively.

She was able to indulge both passions when she and her husband took a seven-month-long world tour in 1985 on an ocean-going freighter.

The Moores' last trip was in May, when they rode a barge from Budapest to Amsterdam.

"This was her way to get out and experience life and meet people, " her son said.
