Sister Rose Carmel, helped keep the convent running

For more than 40 years, Sister Rose Carmel, R.G.S., shunned the spotlight to do the menial jobs that keep a convent going.

"She did all the little, behind-the-scenes kind of things that made everybody else's job easy, " said Sister Dolores Kalina, who lived with Sister Carmel at the Sisters of the Good Shepherd convent in Fort Thomas.

Sister Carmel, 71, who died Sunday at the convent's Pelletier Hall, was born in Texas to Mexican migrant workers. Because she came from a large, poor family, she never had the opportunity to finish her education, Sister Kalina said.

After making a retreat at a convent in Indianapolis, Sister Carmel decided she had a vocation to be a nun, and entered the religious life in 1958 at age 27.

She made her novitiate in Cincinnati, but also served in Louisville and Cleveland before settling at Fort Thomas. She served as a cook, housekeeper and also tended the older sisters in the infirmary.

She was especially fond of animals, and spent a lot of time tending to the convent's dogs.

"She never seemed to regret doing the small jobs, " Sister Kalina said. "She seemed to be happy to be able to do what she could."
