John Winkler, known for generosity

John W. Winkler Sr.'s gestures of kindness touched people as near as his Taylor Mill neighborhood and as far away as the Mexican border.

For the last seven years, he and his wife, Cleo, traveled to a mission in Hildago, Texas, where they fed Mexican immigrants and helped them make various quilts and other crafts.

"Some friends from church got them involved, " said a daughter, Dianna Wiedemann, of Independence. "They were just great people and really hard workers."

In Taylor Mill, Mr. Winkler often sent checks to widowed women in his community. Wiedemann said the amounts varied, depending on what was needed.

Her father's benevolence extended to his own family as well, Wiedemann said. He poured hours of affection on his grandchildren, taking some of them fishing at a pond off Mills Road in Kenton County.

"He was always very giving, " she said. "He loved his family, especially his grandkids."

A retired foreman at Intertank Lining Co., Mr. Winkler spent his free time reading westerns and working in his garden.
