Fern Edwards, helped those in need

Fern Edwards' door and heart were always opened to the less fortunate - especially on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Mrs. Edwards would serve holiday feasts at her Newport pub, Ferns, at Eighth and Central Avenue, every year free of charge.

"It (the feast) would be there for who-so-ever, " said Mrs. Edwards' only granddaughter, Tammy "Fern" Riley, of Foster. "She never closed the door. There was always somebody that didn't have dinner."

Mrs. Edwards, 78, of Foster, died Tuesday of cancer at St. Luke East Hospital in Fort Thomas.

Her relatives remember a tender-hearted woman always striving to help those around her.

She was known to give away cars to single mothers, humidifiers to kids with asthma, and diamond rings to her loved ones.

"Her compassion was just overwhelming, " Riley said. "She was always there to help somebody."

Mrs. Edwards also was known to take the neighborhood children camping and fishing along the Ohio River.

Daughter Sandy Thorpe, of Fos ter, remembers a childhood home full of children. "She loved kids, she loved people, and she loved life. She was always teaching the kids how to sing 'Jesus Loves Me.' "

Religion was also important to Mrs. Edwards. In 1994, she became a devout Pentecostal and member of The Tabernacle of God Church in Grants Lick.

"We could see the Lord had his hands on her, " Riley said.

Other survivors include her hus band, Eugene Edwards; a sister, Connie Adams, of Newport; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at The Tabernacle of God Church, Grants Lick.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. Friday overnight until the time of services Saturday at the church.

Burial will be at The Evergreen cemetery Mausoleum, Newport.

Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.

Robert L. Armstrong Sr., 59, of Brooksville, died Tuesday at his home.

He was an electrician at Cincinnati Machine, formerly Cincinnati Milacron, and a member of Mother of God Church, Covington.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Armstrong; daughters, Jennifer Vertrees of Union, Christina Sterrett of Atlanta, Ga., and Elisabeth Armstrong of San Antonio, Texas; a son, Robert Armstrong Jr. of Hebron; a brother, John Armstrong of Florence; a sister, Carolyn Patrick of Kenton Hills; and seven grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Mother of God Church.

Visitation starts there at 5 p.m. Friday.

Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Memorials are suggested to Children's Hospital, 3333 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229 or to Citizen Advocacy Program of Northern Kentucky, 1401 Dixie Highway, Covington, Ky. 41011.

Wilma Colson Arthur, 86, of Dry Ridge, died Tuesday St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown.

She was a homemaker and a member of Violet Ridge Church of Christ, Crittenden.

She was Youth Leader at Antioch Church of Christ, Corinth.

Her husband, Robert Arthur, died in 1992.

Survivors include a son, Donald Lane Arthur of Waterford, Mich.; daughters, Bonnie Jean Newsome and Billye Jo Henage, both of Dry Ridge, and Sandy Lee True of Corinth; brothers, Jesse Colson, Joe Colson and Johnny Colson, all of Corinth; sisters, Loyal Epperson and Imogene McAdams, both of Dry Ridge, Evelyne Cole of Independence, Libby Bowman of Corinth and Patsy Simpson of Crittenden; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Violet Ridge Church of Christ.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

Burial will be Antioch Church of Christ Cemetery, Corinth.

Memorials are suggested to Philippine Christian Mission Chapel Fund, 945 Dry Ridge-Mount Zion Road, Dry Ridge, Ky. 41035.

Charles Bray, 60, of Grants Lick, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

He was a retired iron worker and a member of Local No. 44 Steelworkers Union, Cincinnati. A son, Charles Walter Bray Jr., died in 1979.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Bray of Grants Lick; daughters, Dorothy Lynn Fowler of Independence and Connie Suzanne Bray of Grants Lick; sisters, Glenna Ball of Ogden, Utah, and Carolyn Mills of Burlington; brothers, Bob Bray of Waddy and James Bray of Columbus, Ind.

Services will be at noon Saturday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Peach Grove Cemetery.

Estelle Marie Spinner Ehrman, 86, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a homemaker and a member of Legion of Mary and St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright.

Her husband, Albert W. Ehrman, and a daughter, Diane Wells, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, William Ehrman of Park Hills; a sister, Rita Lienenbrink of Lake Placid, Fla.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright.

Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Memorials are suggested to American Parkinson's Disease Association, Tri-State Wellness Chapter, P.O. Box 15044, Cincinnati, Ohio 45215.

Gary Lee Ingram, 55, of Covington, died at 1:35 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit, Covington.

A daughter, Bobbi Ingram, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Young of Kansas City, Mo.; a stepson, Johnnie Sams of Covington; mother, Beaulah Mae Brandenburg of Covington; his father and stepmother, James and Betty Ingram of London; a sister, Debra Fritts of Covington; brothers, Dennis Ingram of Hebron, Douglas Ingram of Mansfield, Ohio, and Kendall Brandenburg of Lexington; half-brother, Michael Moore of Williamstown; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Alexandria Funeral Home.

Visitation begins there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Margaret Koch, 79, of Hebron, died Monday at Villa Springs Care Center, Erlanger.

She was a homemaker and a member of Mary Queen of Heaven Church, Erlanger, where she was a member of the choir and active on the prayer line.

Her husband, George William "Bill" Koch, died in 2000.

Survivors include daughters, Linda Winkler of Burlington and Leigh Ober of Hebron; sons, Gary Koch of Florence and Greg Koch of New York City; a brother, Joseph Kordenbrock of Hebron; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Mary Queen of Heaven Church. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Covington.

Memorials are suggested to Mary Ross Mission, 1543 Russell St., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Thomas Patrick McLean Jr., 33, of Burlington, died Sunday at his home.

He was a welder.

Survivors include his wife, Veronia McLean; a son, Jordan Thomas McLean at home; a stepson, Daniel Glen Blevins of Erlanger; his father, Thomas Patrick McLean Sr. of North Hollywood, Calif.; his mother, Charleen McLean of Independence; a sister, Becky McLean of Los Angeles, Calif.; and paternal grandmother, Grace McLean of Burbank, Calif.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Visitation starts there at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Donna Pfeffer Schweitzer, 47, of Fort Thomas, died Monday at her home.

She was a nurse's aide for Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas, and a member of St. Bernard Church, Dayton.

Survivors include her husband, Bruce Schweitzer; her mother, Madeline Pfeffer DeMoss of Fort Thomas; sisters, Dianne Pentenburg of Dayton, Ohio, and Carol Wells of Alexandria; and brothers, Lou Pfeffer of Kansas City, Mo., and Bernie Pfeffer and Tony Pfeffer, both of Dayton.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Bernard Church.

Visitation begins there at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Memorials are suggested to St. Bernard Church, 5th and Berry Streets, Dayton, Ky. 41074 or to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

James F. Wilson I, 68, of Homosassa, Fla., formerly of Wilder, died at noon Monday at Citrus Memorial Hospital, Inverness, Fla.

He was a retired supervisor for Dover Elevator Co., at the Cincinnati and Middleton, Tenn., locations.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Hill Wilson; sons, James F. Wilson II, Cold Spring, Gregory A. Wilson of Fort Myers, Fla., and Andrew M. Wilson of Fort Thomas; a sister, Patricia Gohs of Fort Mitchell; a brother, Ronald C. Wilson of Centerville, Ohio; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Leonard Wright, 87, of Worthville, died Sunday at Norton-Audubon Hospital, Louisville.

He was a farmer, a member of the Mussel Shoals Baptist Church and a Navy veteran of World War II.

His wife, Margaret Geneva Hughes Wright, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Jackie G. Wright of Stamping Ground; a half-brother, Herman Barber of Wheatley and a half-sister, Doris Wilhoite of Owenton.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton.

Visitation begins there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Mussel Shoals Church Cemetery.
