IDA (Alvild Johanna Sandell) BOYER
Ida A. Boyer, 88, of Sturgeon Lake and Palm Bay, FL died Monday, May 8, 2006 at her home in Sturgeon Lake. Ida was born August 29, 1917, in Hinckley to Hjalmer and Anna (Dahl) Sandell. Ida was united in marriage to Bruce Boyer on November 12, 1976 in Blooming Prairie. Ida was a teacher at Pine County District III, Carlton County (Blackhoof Valley School), Wright, Scanlon, Sawyer, Cloquet and Carlton Schools. She enjoyed bridge, golf and especially spending time with family and friends. Ida enjoyed 30 years of living between their cabin on Sand Lake in Sturgeon Lake and Palm Bay, FL.
Ida is preceded in death by her 1st husband, Carl Oswell; her parents; 1 brother, Fernon; 1 sister, Verna.
Ida is survived by her loving husband, Bruce Boyer of Sturgeon Lake; daughter, Susan (Mark) Behrends; Step-Son, Stuart (Pat) Boyer; grandchildren, Jannifer (Steve) Scholl and Tyler Behrends; Step granddaughter, Sandy Boyer; 3 great grandchildren, Calen and Kacey Scholl and Justin Boyer; 1 brother, Leonard (Irene) Sandell; 1 sister, Lillian Porter.
A gathering of family and friends was Friday, May 12, 2006 from 10 until the 11 AM Memorial Service in Hope Lutheran Church, Moose Lake with Pastor Lyle Nielsen officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Sandy Lake Cemetery, Blackhoof Township. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers to the Cloquet Education Foundation, 302 14th St., Cloquet, MN 55720. Arrangements are with Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake.
ALICE BENSON
Alice E. Benson, 86 of Mahtowa died Thursday, May 11, 2006 in Mercy Health Care Center in Moose Lake. She was born September 29, 1919 in St. Paul to John and Mabel (Nelson) Class. She moved to the Mahtowa area in the early 1940's and on June 20, 1943 Alice married Clifford Benson in Carlton. She was a partner in the dairy farming enterprise as well as raising a family. After the cows were sold, she became a partner in the Benson Dairy Service dairy equipment and supply business. Alice was an avid gardener having many gardens of beautiful perennials.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Herman.
She is survived by a son, Paul (Barbara) Benson of Laveen, Michigan. They lived in Missouri on December 2, 1921 to Albert and Addy (Clevenger) Kemper. She was married to Mansel Martin who passed away in 2000. She was a member of the Bethany Auxiliary. She loved to cook and made "the best pies", enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading, gardening and playing cards. Ida and her husband were previous owners of the Cloquet Pine Knot, Moose Lake Star Gazette and the Carlton County Vidette.
She is survived by her daughters: Carol Smith of Baxter and Marilyn (Greg) Peters, of Brainerd; three grandchildren and one great grandchild; also survived by her sister Sarah Rone, of Arkansas.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Services were held on Saturday, May 13, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. at the Bethany Good Samaritan Village Chapel in Brainerd with Pastor Lilja Behr officiating. Interment was at the Pine Ridge Cemetery in Pine River. Memorials are preferred to the Bethany Auxiliary.
Arrangements are with Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home.
HELEN S. MEADE
Helen S. Meade, 95, longtime resident of Toivola, died Saturday, May 20, 2006 in Evergreen Terrace in Grand Rapids.
She was born Sept. 20, 1910 in Floodwood, MN, the daughter of Jacob and Aliina (Simi) Kero.
She attended school in Toivola and Floodwood, and was married to Roy Meade on March 20, 1929 in Duluth. Helen worked as a homemaker. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Toivola, and she served on the ladies guild there. She was a member of the Sr. Citizens in Toivola, and the women of the Moose in Hibbing. Helen enjoyed bowling, crocheting, and knitting, and picking berries.
She is survived by her two daughters, Dorothy (Curtis) Saralampi of Toivola, and Doris Sametz of Hibbing; five grandchildren, Keith (Linda) Saralampi of Toivola, Clayton "Butch" (Nancy) Saralampi of Canyon, Scott Saralampi of Canyon, Gayle (Edward) La-Tendresse of Hibbing, and Patrice (Robert) Durovec of Meadowlands; five great grandsons; four great grandaughters; three great great grandsons; a sister in law, Nora Kelly of Tallahassee, Fla.; a brother in law, Arvo Lahti of Cloquet; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy in 1988; her grandson Craig in 1990; four sisters and two brothers.
IDA E. RANTALA
Ida E. Rantala, 97, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Pengilly, died on Sunday, May 21, 2006 in the Evergreen Terrace, Grand Rapids.
Born on May 18, 1909 in Bovey, the daughter of August and Mary (Pekkala) Wisuri.
She was a homemaker and dedicated her life to her family.
Survivors include her sons, Bill (Valerie) Rantala of Embarrass, Minn., Ron (Louise) Rantala of Crooked Lake, Minn., and a daughter, Ida Mae (Vern) Budrow of Grand Rapids, Minn. 19 grandchildren and many great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilho; a daughter, Marilyn Lane; her sisters, Tynne Marie "T" Carlson, Grace Pratt, Sally Erickson, Ikes Lauden Mack, Helen Kozina; and a brother, Wilfred "Dukes" Wisuri.
SCOTT ALLAN EGGERT
Scott A. Eggert, 39, of Carlton, passed away Saturday, May 20, 2006.
Scott was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Eggert.
He is survived by his wife, Anne; three sons, Scott McNew of Duluth, Jacob Eggert and Daniel Eggert of Carlton; three daughters, Nicholle McNew of Duluth and Amanda and Christy Eggert of Carlton; his mother, Judith Stenstrom of Duluth; three brothers, Ken (Danielle) Eggert of Iowa. This union was blessed with a son, Rodney. Jerry lived in Moose Lake and the surrounding area. He first worked as a farmer. Jerry began working at the Moose Lake State Hospital in 1958. He transferred to the Rochester State Hospital in 1973. Jerry and Bernita moved to Hancock and operated the Shady Lawn Boarding Home from 1978 to 1984. They then did Adult Foster Home Care until 2001, when he retired. Jerry was a member of the Alberta Church of the Nazarene in Alberta. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, reading, cryptograms and farming. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.
Jerry passed away on Friday, June 2, 2006 at the SCMC Courage Cottage in Morris, having lived to reach the age of 77 years.
He is survived by his wife: Bernita Olson of Hancock; one daughter: Stephanie (Scott) Poe of Bartlesville, OK; one son: Rod (Shari) Olson of Morris; three grandchildren: Jeff (Becky) Poe, Laura Poe and Jeslyn Olson; two brothers: Glen (Gloria) Olson of Sturgeon Lake and John (LuAnn) Olson of Barnum; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents: Joe and Katie; first wife: Ruth Adams; brothers: Earl, Don, Dick and Bernard Olson.
Pallbearers will be Rich Friesen, Jeff Poe, Alan Charles, Harold Charles, Zip Bell, and Tom Adams. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry's grandchildren: Laura Poe, Becky Poe, Jeslyn Olson and all those that called him friend. Lois Strei will serve as organist with Gary Strei serving as song leader. Lois and Gary Strei and Amanda Varnum will also provide special music. Pedersen Funeral Home of Morris is in charge of arrangements.
