Jackie C. Hayes
1925-1999
TARKIO, Mo. -- Jackie Cecil Hayes, 73, Tarkio, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at a hospital in Fairfax, Mo.
Mr. Hayes worked in construction in Abilene, Texas, from 1946 to 1947, and later farmed in Arkansas for a short time. He moved to Kansas City in 1947, where he worked for the General Motors Corp., before becoming a service technician at Addressograph Multigraph Manufacturing.
While working as a technician there, he learned the trade of a pressman. In 1963, he became employed at Ray Printing Inc., Kansas City. He worked there until 1973, when he began work at Friend Printing, Kansas City, from which he retired in 1987.
Born Sept. 6, 1925, in Abilene, he was a graduate of Abilene High School and attended one year at McMurray College. He served with the Navy during World War II, from 1941 to 1945, and lived in Tarkio since 1996.
Mr. Hayes was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Kansas City. He was a former counselor and leader for the Boy Scouts of America.
On May 18, 1946, he married Frances L. Newton in Abilene. She survives of the home.
Mr. Hayes was preceded in death by his parents, Henry C. and Josie B.
Additional survivors: a son, Steven R., Tarkio; a half-brother, Greg Hunsucker, Visalia, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Mary H. Hillyer
1917-1998
PHOENIX -- Mary Helen (Bowe) Hillyer, 81, Phoenix, formerly of Chula, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at her home.
Mrs. Hillyer, a homemaker, was born April 11, 1917, in Chula. She lived there and in Liberty, Mo., before moving to Arizona 35 years ago.
On Feb. 23, 1956, she married Lawrence L. Hillyer. He died in 1986.
Mrs. Hillyer also was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mary A. Bowe.
Surviving: two sister, Ila Stegall, Stockton, Mo., and Ava Hess, Kirbyville, Mo.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Mo. Burial: Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Chillicothe. Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, and 8 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, at the funeral home. William F. Jasper
1934-1999
ATCHISON, Kan. -- William F. Jasper, 64, Atchison, formerly of Troy, Kan., died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at a Kansas City hospital.
Mr. Jasper was a police officer for the Atchison Police Department for 26 years. He worked as a court officer for six years, until his retirement in 1991.
Born July 9, 1934, in Fanning, Kan., he lived in Troy until moving to Atchison in 1959. He served in the Army.
On April 30, 1957, he married Margaret Davis in Troy. She survives of the home.
Mr. Jasper was preceded in death by his father, Virgil O.; and two infant sisters, Donna L. and Sara E.
Additional survivors: three sons, Tim, St. Joseph, Tom, Atchison, and James, Kansas City; his mother, Genevieve, Atchison; and three brothers, Jack, Atchison, Mike, Highland, Kan., and Pat, Troy.
Service: 2 p.m. Thursday, Harman-Rohde Funeral Home, Troy. Burial: Fanning Cemetery, with full military honors under the auspices of the Atchison Police Department. Family visitation: 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

John M. McCarty
1926-1999
MAITLAND, Mo. -- John M. McCarty, 72, Maitland, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mr. McCarty retired as vice-president of Columbia Glass and Window, Kansas City, after 20 years of service. After his retirement, he farmed in the Maitland area. He also served with the Army during World War II, and was discharged at the rank of master sergeant.
Born Jan. 27, 1926, in Auxvasse, Mo., he lived in Kansas City until moving to Maitland in the early 1970s. He was a graduate of the Smith Cotton High School, Sedalia, Mo.
Mr. McCarty was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Forest City, Mo., and the Knights of Columbus.
On Feb. 7, 1947, he married Charlotte Smith in Sedalia. She survives of the home.
Mr. McCarty was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlotte A.; and his parents, Alice and Charlotte.
Additional survivors: three sons, Mike, San Diego, Pat, Maitland, and Tim, Hiawatha, Kan.; two daughters, Jeanette Schreimann, Lee's Summit, Mo., and Treasa Hershberger, Green ward, Mo.; a sister, Patty Christy, Claremore, Okla.; six grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; and a step great-grandchild.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Chamberlain Funeral Home, Mound City. Family visitation: 6 to 7:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Eleanor McClanahan
CHICAGO -- Eleanor M. McClanahan, Chicago, formerly of Gower, Mo., died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. McClanahan was preceded in death by her husband, Bill McClanahan.
Surviving: a daughter, Phyllis Wosniak, Chicago; and a grandchild.
Services were held Jan. 2, 1999, at the Colonial Funeral Home, Chicago.

Benjamin L. Peacock
1914-1999
OMAHA, Neb. -- Benjamin L. Peacock, 84, Omaha, formerly of Union Star, Mo., died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at an Omaha health-care center.
Mr. Peacock was employed at Harkert's House, Inc., Omaha, where he was manager until purchasing the restaurant. He worked at Tiner's Drive-In for 10 years before becoming assistant food manager at Boy's Town, Omaha. He retired in 1984 after working for 50 years in the food service industry.
Born March 22, 1914, in Union Star, he was reared there and attended the Kidder (Mo.) Junior College for two years.
On May 22, 1935, he married Anabel Wickham in Harlan, Iowa. She survives of the home.
Mr. Peacock was preceded in death by a son, Duane; his parents, Bert G. and Mabel; and four sisters, Alice Willis, Alberta Atkinson, Marjorie Peacock and Inez Mallory.
Additional survivors: two brothers, Bert and Charles, both of St. Joseph; three sisters, Harriett Martin, Willa J. Fuller and Frances Pioch, all of St. Joseph; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Margaret L. Stains
1938-1999
Margaret Louise (Hargrave) Stains, 60, St. Joseph, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Born Feb. 25, 1938, in Breckenridge, Mo., Mrs. Stains lived in St. Joseph most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of the New Testament Christian Church, St. Joseph.
Mrs. Stains was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Stains; a son, James White; her parents, Clarence and Mary K. Hargrave; two brothers, Denny and James Hargrave; and two sisters, Irene Benton and Nancy Oliphant.
Surviving: two sons, Michael, Elwood, Kan., and John, St. Joseph; three daughters, Vickie Clark, Crystal Stains and Pamela White, all of St. Joseph; two brothers, Ronnie Hargrave, St. Joseph, and Ricky Hargrave, Cameron, Mo.; a sister, Shirley Mason, St. Joseph; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Robert W. Staley
1927-1999
AZLE, Texas -- Robert William Staley, 71, Azle, formerly of King City, Mo., died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at a hospice in Burleson, Texas.
Born April 13, 1927, in Union Star, Mo., Mr. Staley was a graduate of Union Star High School. He served with the Navy during World War II.
On May 11, 1951, he married Carolyn Bricker in Bentonville, Ark. They owned and operated the CRS Concrete Construction Co., King City, for several years, moving the business to Texas 14 years ago. His wife, Carolyn, survives of the home.
Mr. Staley was a member of the King City Presbyterian Church and the Whitesville (Mo.) Masonic Lodge. He formerly served on the state board for the Missouri High School Rodeo Association.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Clarence and Hazel.
Additional survivors: three sons, Gary and Randy, both of Boyd, Texas, and Larry, Beverly Hills, Calif.; a daughter, Cyndi Herbig, Kent, Wash.; a sister, Eva Estep, King City; and four grandchildren.

Gilbert A. Whitney
1917-1999
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Gilbert Austin Whitney, 81, Maryville, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, at a Maryville hospital.
Born Dec. 19, 1917, in Leominster, Mass., Mr. Whitney was a graduate of Leominster High School. He later attended the United States Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn., and served with the Coast Guard during World War II, from 1941 to 1945.
After attending Tri-State University, Angola, Ind., he received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Boston University. While working toward his doctorate at the university, he worked with Dr. Sarah Caldwell, a well-known opera writer and producer. He later taught vocal and choral music at Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville.
Mr. Whitney was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Maryville, and directed choir for several years at many area churches. He also was a member of the Maryville Lion's Club, Country Club and Parks and Recreation Board, and Maryville Citizens for Community Action. He was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and the Sinfonia Musical Fraternity, and was a former chairman of the area's Agency of Aging.
On Sept. 5, 1946, he married Kathleen F. Friddle in Leominster. She survives of the home.
Mr. Whitney was preceded in death by his parents, Austin and Daisy; two brothers, Gordon and David; and a sister, Laura Davis.
Additional survivors: two sons, Michael, DeSoto, Kan., and Dana, Houston; his twin brother, Francis, Leominster; a niece who was raised in the home, Donna Davis, Houlton, Wis.; and five grandchildren.

Paul C. Yardley
1916-1999
Paul C. Yardley, 82, St. Joseph, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mr. Yardley was a watch repairman for many years at Wright's Jewelry Store until retiring in 1991. Before that, he worked at Anderson Jewelry Store, Kirksville, Mo., and owned and operated a clock store in Kirksville. He also worked at Zale's Jewelry, St. Joseph.
Born Dec. 9, 1916, in Reger, Mo., he lived in Kirksville and Stewartsville, Mo., before moving to St. Joseph, where he lived most of his life. He was a graduate of Bradley University, Peoria, Ill., in the horology division, and was valedictorian of his graduating class at Knox City High School. He served in the Army during World War II, and received the Good Conduct, European and National Defense Medals.
Mr. Yardley was a member of the First Baptist Church, St. Joseph, and supported the Disabled American Veterans and Paralyzed American Veterans Associations.
On June 12, 1943, he married Velma McKay in LaBelle, Mo. She survives of the home.
Mr. Yardley was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence C. and Maude Yardley; and a sister, Genevieve Hoselton.
Additional survivors: a daughter, Yvonne Y. Ibarra, Gladstone, Mo.; his twin sister, Pauline Schofield, Macon, Mo.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Raymond E. Boos
1937-1999
LANCASTER, Kan. -- Raymond E. Boos, 61, Lancaster, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at a Kansas City hospital.
Born May 3, 1937, in rural Doniphan County, Kan., he was a graduate of Maur Hill Prep School, Atchison, Kan. He was a farmer and raised livestock.
Mr. Boos was a member of the St. Louis Catholic Church, Good Intent, Kan., Knights of Columbus No. 723, Atchison, the Kansas Livestock Association and the Farm Bureau, of which he was a former board member.
On Aug. 18, 1962, he married Donna Bond in Good Intent. In 1988, they received the Kansas Bankers Award for soil conservation. His wife, Donna, survives of the home.
Mr. Boos was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Dolores; and a sister, JoAnn.
Additional survivors: two daughters, Mary K. Olmstead, Lancaster, and Sheryl L. Morrison, Atchison; two sons, Mark and Tim, both of Lancaster; two brothers, Phil, Atchison, and Eddie, Cozad, Neb.; a sister, Mary Metz, Easton, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Friday, St. Louis Catholic Church, Good Intent. Burial: in the church cemetery. A Parish and Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at 7 tonight, Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, Atchison, with family visitation following until 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be sent to the church, Maur Hill Prep School or the Benedictine Sisters, Atchison, in care of the funeral home.

Velma Hansen
1925-1999
SKIDMORE, Mo. -- Velma (Peter) Hansen, 73, Skidmore, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at a hospital in Maryville, Mo.
Mrs. Hansen, a homemaker and farmer, taught at the Bloomdale Community School from 1943 to 1945.
Born Dec. 18, 1925, in Maryville, she was a lifelong area resident, and a graduate of Maryville High School.
Mrs. Hansen was a member of the Skidmore Methodist Church, where was an organist and pianist for many years. She also was a member of the Successful Club, Gill Community Club, American Legion Auxiliary and 4-H Club, all of Skidmore.
On March 25, 1944, she married Paul A. Hansen Sr. in Troy, Kan. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Hansen was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Blanche Peter.
Additional survivors: two daughters, Jean Appleman, Centerville, Iowa, and Sherry Flanary, Branson, Mo.; a son, Paul Jr., Maryville; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Oliver B. Heater
1921-1999
Oliver Bryan "Ollie" Heater, 77, St. Joseph, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mr. Heater worked at the former Noma Lites, St. Joseph, for 20 years. He later worked as a shipping clerk at the Ross-Frazier Supply Co., St. Joseph, for 14 years, retiring in 1986.
Born Dec. 2, 1921, in St. Joseph, he was a lifelong St. Joseph resident. He served with the Army during World War II.
On Feb. 14, 1949, he married Patricia A. Chesser in Troy, Kan. She died in 1988.
Mr. Heater also was preceded in death by a son, Patrick; his parents, Charles and Mamie; four brothers, Edward, Benjamin, James and Charles; and a sister, Clara Pendland.
Surviving: six sons, Bryan, Donald, Roy, John, Tim and James, all of St. Joseph; two daughters, Doris Allen and Rebecca Fenwick, both of St. Joseph; three sisters, Charlotte Huber, Savannah, Mo., Virginia Davisson, St. Joseph, and Mary J. Coutts, Underwood, N.D.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Service: 10 a.m. Saturday, Gladden-Stamey Funeral Home, St. Joseph. Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph. Visitation: after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be sent to a charity of the donor's choice.
