Alice E. Wood
1909-1999
ROCK PORT, Mo. - Alice E. (Noland) Wood, 89, Rock Port, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at a Rock Port health-care center.
Mrs. Wood was born in Forest City, Mo., on March 9, 1909. She lived most of her life in Forest City before moving to Oregon, Mo. She had lived in Rock Port since 1989.
A homemaker, she attended school in Forest City. She was a member of Forest City United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1963; her parents, Joseph A. and Pearl M. Noland; two brothers, William H. and Lee F. Noland; and two sisters, Bessie M. and Ruth G. Noland.
Surviving: a brother, Roy A. Noland, Omaha, Neb.
The body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date with burial in Maple Grove Cemetery in Oregon. Arrangements: Chamberlain Funeral Home, Oregon.

John A. Yates
1950-1999
John A. Yates, 48, St. Joseph, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, from injuries suffered in a one-vehicle accident on I-70 Highway near St. Louis, Mo.
Mr. Yates had been a teacher for the St. Joseph School District since 1972 and taught at Bliss School. In 1973, he taught the seventh and eight grades mathematics classes at Truman Middle School and taught there for 15 years.
During that time, he also was the adult basic education instructor at the Eastside Human Resources Center and Buchanan County Law Enforcement Center.
In 1987, Mr. Yates was hired as the assistant principal at Truman, and in 1994, he transferred to Robidoux Middle School as the assistant principal. He was appointed the principal at Robidoux during the 1997-98 school year and was serving as principal of that school at the time of his death.
Born in Grenada, Miss., on Oct. 3, 1950, he had been a resident of St. Joseph for 27 years. He was graduated from the Carrie Dotson High School in Grenada, where he was president of his senior class, vice-president of the Student Council and salutatorian of his graduating class. Mr. Yates received a bachelor of science degree in secondary education from the Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar, Mo., and a master's degree in administration from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. He also held a specialist in educational administration degree and was currently working on a doctorate in education administration at the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
Mr. Yates was a member of the First Baptist Mount Union Church in St. Joseph and a former member of the St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church of Grenada.
In December of 1987, he married Erica F. Thomas in Las Vegas, Nev. She survives of the home.
Mr. Yates was preceded in death by his father, John D.

Kalebu, Tacoma, Wash., and Lyvon Taylor, Grenada; seven brothers, Lee D. Yates, Ray C. Yates, Fred L. Taylor Jr., Jimmy L. Taylor and Timothy J. Taylor, all of Grenada, William D. Yates, Gary, Ind., and Ernest R. Yates, Fairbanks, Ark.; and a grandchild.
Service: 2 p.m. Saturday, in the Dr. Thompson E. Potter Fine Arts Theater of Missouri Western State College, St. Joseph. The body will be taken to the college one hour prior to the service. Visitation: after 9 a.m. Friday, at Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care, St. Joseph, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday. Selva P. Alexander
1908-1999
CHARITON, Iowa - Selva P. (Cunningham) Alexander, 90, Chariton, formerly of Ravanna, Mo., died Monday, March 8, 1999, at a Chariton health-care center of pneumonia.
Mrs. Alexander, born in Ravanna, Mo., on July 16, 1908, spent her early years in Ravanna and also lived near Lineville, Iowa, for many years. She lived in Chariton the past several years.
She was a homemaker and also taught in rural schools in Lineville. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chariton.
On Dec. 25, 1930, she married Earl Alexander. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Alexander also was preceded in death by a son, Donald; and her parents, Alfred and Harriet Cunningham.
Surviving: a son, Jim, Lombard, Ill.; a daughter, Marilyn J. Stanley, Chariton; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Service: 10:30 a.m. today, Fielding Funeral Home, Chariton. Burial: Evergreen Cemetery, Lineville. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church or the Chariton Public Library.

Mary E. Brumm
1911-1999
MENLO PARK, Calif. - Mary E. (Thompson) Brumm, 87, Menlo Park, formerly of St. Joseph, died Friday, March 5, 1999, at her home.
Born Sept. 17, 1911, in Ogden, Utah, she spent her youth in Wisconsin, where she attended Ripon College. She received a degree in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin.
Mrs. Brumm worked as a medical technician at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., before moving from St. Joseph to Menlo Park in 1955. She was a member of the Stanford University Golf Course Women's 9-Hole Group.
Her husband, Dr. Harold J. Brumm, a retired physician and founder of the Thompson-Brumm-Knepper Clinic in St. Joseph, died in 1997.
Mrs. Brumm also was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mabel Thompson.
Surviving: four sons, Harold Jr., Arlington, Va., Stephen, Missouri City, Texas, Richard, Aptos, Calif., and Daniel, Pleasanton, Calif.; a daughter, Nancy Walsh, Olympia, Wash.; and 10 grandchildren.
Graveside service and burial: 1 p.m. Saturday, Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph. Family visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph. Memorials may be made to the Hands of Hope Hospice, St. Joseph.

Ruth C. Butcher
1906-1999
WATHENA, Kan. - Ruth C. (Chambers) Butcher, 92, Wathena, formerly of St. Joseph, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at a Wathena health-care center.
Born Dec. 9, 1906, in St. Joseph, she moved with her family to Elwood, Kan., at a young age, where she lived until returning to St. Joseph in 1987.
Mrs. Butcher was a member of the St. Joseph Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, where she was active in Bible education work.
In 1923, she married Grant Butcher Sr. in Wathena. He died in 1961.
Mrs. Butcher also was preceded in death by her parents, Luke and Elizabeth Chambers; two sisters, Edith Brown and Beatrice Enoex; and a brother, Robert S. Chambers.
Surviving: a son, Grant Jr., St. Joseph; five sisters, Hester Hoggatt, Leavenworth, Kan., Jessie White, Oakland, Calif., Florence Coles, Washington, D.C., and Mabel Brown and Kathryn Gamble, both of St. Joseph; a brother, Warren Chambers, St. Joseph; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Harman-Rohde Funeral Home, Wathena. Burial: Bellemont Cemetery, Wathena. Visitation: after noon today at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight.

Samuel Chitwood Sr.
1914-1999
SKIDMORE, Mo. - Samuel Clay Chitwood Sr., 85, Skidmore, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at a Fairfax, Mo., hospital.
A retired farmer, Mr. Chitwood was born in Ellington, Mo., on March 10, 1914. He lived in the Skidmore and Elmo, Mo., areas the past 50 years.
He was a member of Skidmore Christian Church.
On Oct. 21, 1933, he married Hazel M. Dawson in Van Buren, Mo.. She died in 1979.
He later married Vera J. Gust on Aug. 1, 1979, in Burlington Junction, Mo. She survives of the home.
Mr. Chitwood also was preceded in death by a son, Samuel C. Jr.
Additional survivors: two sons, Kenneth, Clearmont, Mo., and Robert, Barnard, Mo.; seven daughters, Freeda Stava, Chico, Calif., Ella Armagast, Big Fork, Mont., Lois Scott, Carol Strauch, and Kathy Chitwood, all of Skidmore, Melba Barr, Des Moines, Iowa, and Sally Sims, Schuyler, Neb.; four stepsons, Danny Wymore, Excelsior Springs, Mo., Charles Wymore, Farley, Mo., and Walt and Dale Wymore, both of Weston, Mo.; a stepdaughter, Beverly Wymore, Maryville; two brothers, Bill, Ellington, and Earl, Red Bay, Ala.; four sisters, Sally Parrack, Roach, Mo., Imogene Hampton and Anna Kinnard, both of Ellington, and Onata Hampton, Des Arc, Mo.; 23 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Service: 2 p.m. Friday, Price Funeral Home, Maryville. Burial: Nodaway Memorial Gardens, Maryville. Family visitation: 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Ernest S. Cruickshank
1912-1999
CAMERON, Mo. - Ernest S. "Ernie'' Cruickshank, 86, Cameron, died Monday, March 8, 1999, at a health-care center in Cameron.
Mr. Cruickshank, a self-employed plumber, owned and operated Cruickshank's Plumbing in Cameron until retiring in 1985. Before that he had farmed.
Born in Seibert, Colo., on April 23, 1912, he lived in Winston, Mo., before moving to Cameron in 1956.
He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Cameron, where he was ordained to the office of teacher, a position he held for 50 years.
On Aug. 3, 1938, he married Twyla Caley in Denver. She survives of the home.
Mr. Cruickshank also was preceded in death by a son, David; a daughter, Carrie; his parents, Roy and Susie; and two brothers, Louis and Alva.
Additional survivors: a son, Lonnie, Taipei, Taiwan; two daughters, Elaine Mauzey, Denver, and Alice Cruickshank, Aurora, Colo.; three brothers, Francis Cruickshank, Turney, Mo., and Curtis and Leland Haslee, both of Englewood, Colo.; two sisters, Eva Neal, Orlando, Fla., and Ethel Martin, Albuquerque, N.M.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Service: 3 p.m. Saturday, Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Cameron. Burial: Delano Cemetery, north of Cameron. Family visitation: 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church. The Rev. Hilary Heim
1923-1999
ATCHISON, Kan. - The Rev. Hilary Heim, O.S.B., 75, a monk at St. Benedict's Abbey, Atchison, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, in Seneca, Kan. He recently was hospitalized with a heart problem.
A monk at St. Benedict's Abbey for more than 55 years and the business manager for the abbey for 21 years, the Rev. Heim also was a priest-in-residence at the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca.
Born in Leavenworth, Kan., on July 11, 1923, he was a graduate of the Immaculate High School there. He earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from St. Benedict's College in Atchison, a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Notre Dame and a doctorate in educational measurement and research from the University of Northern Colorado.
The Rev. Heim became a monk of St. Benedict's Abbey in 1943 and was ordained a priest in 1949. He did his theological studies at the Abbey School of Theology.
He began his vocation by teaching mathematics at St. Benedict's College in 1949 and continued into 1971, when the college merged with Mount St. Scholastica College to become Benedictine College. He was director of admissions at Benedictine from 1971 to 1972.
He held several posts at St. Benedict's College, including dean of the college from 1962 to 1968, dean of men from 1955 to 1961 and moderator of athletics. He also had served on the board of directors and board of governors for St. Benedict's College.
The Rev. Heim was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Stella; a sister, Betty; and three brothers, Cloyd, Herbert and Bernard.
Surviving: two brothers, Charles, Omaha, Neb., and Harold, Easton, Kan.; and two sisters, Agnes Heintzelman and Eleanor Forge, both of Leavenworth.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Abbey Church, Atchison. Burial: monastery cemetery. Vespers service: 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Arrangements: Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, Atchison. Memorials may be made to St. Benedict's Abbey or the Immaculate High School in Leavenworth.

Erma H. Johnson
1906-1999
HANNIBAL, Mo. - Erma Helen (Harder) Johnson, 92, Hannibal, formerly of St. Joseph, died Monday, March 8, 1999, at a Hannibal hospital.
Mrs. Johnson was born in St. Joseph on Sept. 26, 1906. She was a retired bookkeeper for Western Tablet and later Mead Products, of St. Joseph.
She lived in St. Joseph most of her life until moving to Hannibal in 1992.
Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Warren W.
Surviving: nieces and nephews, including Dr. E.W. Harder, Hannibal.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Friday, Smith Funeral Home, Hannibal. Burial: at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the New Era Healthcare Foundation in care of the Hannibal Regional Hospital, P.O. Box 1045, Hannibal, MO 63401.

Dr. Allen I. Herman
1909-1999
Dr. Allen I. Herman, 89, St. Joseph, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital after a brief illness.
Dr. Herman practiced medicine in Chetopa, Kan.; and Springfield, Mo.; and St. Joseph from 1946 until retiring in 1980.
Born in St. Joseph on Nov. 9, 1909, he graduated from Central High School and St. Joseph Junior College, where he was valedictorian of his class. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia and a bachelor of science degree in medicine and a doctor's degree, both from Washington University in St. Louis.
In 1934, he interned at the St. Louis City Hospital; and received further training at the New York Polyclinic of New York City, and Baylor University in Houston, Texas.
In 1940, Dr. Herman was called to active duty in the Army Medical Corps, earning the rank of first lieutenant. During his service, he served the 8th Army in Italy as executive surgeon in the surgeon's office of the Peninsular Base Section. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1945 and was named surgeon of the southern district of the Peninsular Base Section in Naples, Italy. Dr. Herman was in charge of all United States Army hospitals and other installations in Southern Italy. After five years of military service, he was discharged and received many awards, including the Pre-Pearl Harbor, American Theatre Three-Starred Mediterranean Theatre and Victory Ribbons.
Dr. Herman was a member of St. Joseph Lodge No. 78, A.F.&A.M.; 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason; Moila Shrine Temple Shrine; American Medical Association; and Buchanan County Medical Association, of which he was president. Other memberships and past presidencies include the St. Joseph Clinical Society, St. Joseph's and Methodist Hospital's Staff, and St. Joseph Heart Society. Dr. Herman was a former member of the editorial board of the St. Joseph State Hospital, board of the St. Joseph Community Concert, board of Temple Adath Joseph, B'nai B'rith, St. Joseph Planning and Zoning Commission and Rotary Club.
He was a charter member of the St. Joseph Symphony Orchestra and held third chair of the first violin section for 25 years. His social fraternities include Phi Delta Epsilon, Alpha Omega Alpah national honorary medical fraternity and Phi Beta Kappa.
Dr. Herman was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Flora; and a brother, Kenneth M.
On June 20, 1937, he married Rose Waisblum in Kansas City. She survives of the home.
Additional survivors: a daughter, Keri Spalding, St. Joseph; a son, Stephen D. Herman, St. Joseph; a brother, Milton Herman, St. Joseph; and a grandchild.
Service: 4:30 p.m. Friday, Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care, St. Joseph, with a Sabbath service to follow at 6 p.m. at Temple Adath Joseph, St. Joseph. Burial: Shaare Sholem Cemetery, St. Joseph. Family visitation: 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Mabel B. Kuhlman
1913-1999
FALLS CITY, Neb. - Mabel B. (Cummings) Kuhlman, 86, Falls City, formerly of Shubert, Neb., died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at a Falls City hospital.
Mrs. Kuhlman was born near Shubert on Jan. 23, 1913. She was raised in the Shubert area.
On Jan. 20, 1932, she married Marvin C. Kuhlman in Falls City. They lived in Barada, Neb., after their marriage until 1947 when they moved to the Shubert area.
The couple farmed in the Shubert area until moving to Falls City in 1975 where they were custodians for the First National Bank & Trust Co. for eight years before retiring in 1983.
Mrs. Kuhlman was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, in 1993; her parents, Arthur and Nellie Cummings; two sisters, Eva and Hazel; and five brothers, Lloyd, Rollie, Everette, Clarence and Albert Cummings.
Surviving: a daughter, Marjorie Ann Cochran, Falls City; and a grandchild.
Private family graveside service and burial: in Steele Cemetery, Falls City. Family visitation: 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Dorr Funeral Home, Falls City.

Zilpha E. Leeper
1897-1999
SAN ANTONIO - Zilpha E. (Ferguson) Leeper, 101, San Antonio, formerly of Edinburg and Trenton, Mo., died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at a San Antonio health-care center.
Born Oct. 13, 1897, in Grundy County, Mo., Mrs. Leeper was a member of the Trenton First Baptist Church. She later joined the Valley-Hi First Baptist Church in San Antonio.
On Feb. 23, 1921, she married Roy E. Leeper. After their marriage, they lived in California for two years before returning to Edinburg to farm. They later farmed in Trenton, where she remained after the death of her husband in 1957. In 1978, she moved to San Antonio to make her home with her daughter, Eva Sparks.
Mrs. Leeper also was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Rotrock; her parents, William T. and Thoebe R. Ferguson; and eight brothers and sisters.
Additional survivors: seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Service: 2 p.m. Friday, Resthaven Mortuary, Trenton. Burial: Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, Edinburg. Visitation: after 9 a.m. Friday at the mortuary.
