George E. Potter
George E. Potter, 70, of Lee’s Summit passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Funeral services are 3 p.m. Monday, July 24, at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, with burial in Floral Hills East Cemetery, Lee’s Summit. Friends may call 2 to 3 p.m. Monday at the chapel.
Mr. Potter was born Dec. 4, 1929, in Kansas City, Mo. He was a tool maker with AT&T; 18 1/2 years before his retirement.
He was loved by his wife, Joanne J. Potter; six daughters and and five sons-in-law, Susan E. Carter, Georgianna K. and Les Clark, Vicky L. and Joe Doerr, Carrie A. and Phillip Ramsey, Patricia D. and Darrell Boudreaux, and Sharon L. and Tom Tuley; his parents, Herman and Verna Richert, and Geneva Potter; a sister and brother-in-law, Vonna Lee and Jim Reynolds; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was loved by many and will be missed.

WILLIAM ELMER BAILEY
William Elmer Bailey, 88, of Butler, Mo., died Friday, July 7, 2000, at his home in rural Butler. His body was donated to the University of Kansas Medical Center for anatomical study and research of Parkinson Disease. A memorial service has been set for 4 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler. Visitation is 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the chapel.
Contributions may be made to the Parkinson Association.
He was born Feb. 11, 1912, to John William and Arcelia Anna Hopkins Bailey in Ubly, Mich.
In 1920, Bill’s family moved to Independence. William went to school at William Chrisman High School where he graduated in 1930. He considered one of his greatest achievements being editor-in-chief of the Annual Gleam. He also received a teacher’s certificate, but never taught.
He grew up in the shoe repair trade with his father and brother, and operated a chain of four shoe shops, some for 25 years. William also owned and operated a farm on Spring Branch Road, Truman Road, and M-7, where he owned dairy cattle and later changed to orcharding. William worked at the Remington Arms plant at Lake City starting only three days after Pearl Harbor was bombed, and retired in March 1976 with 29 years of service.
On July 10, 1959, he was united in marriage with Anna Gertrude Witzke. William joined the R.L.D.S. church in 1920 in Ubly. He was baptized by his grandfather, Evangelist Patriarch J.J. Bailey. He was a member of the Walnut Park congregation for several years and later transferred to the Butler congregation.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Muir; two sisters, Vernetta Bailey and Duelda Dutzel; and a half-brother, Everett Bailey. Bill is survived by his wife, Ann, Lee’s Summit; a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Mark Davenport, Butler; two grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Shaun Davenport and fiancé Jammie Sanders, Raytown, Mo., and Stacy and Michelle Davenport, Butler; a granddaughter, Kristie Davenport, Warsaw, Mo.; three great-grandchildren; a niece who he raised for several years and her husband, Lou Ann and Earl Hilliker, Jonesville, Mich.; three great-nephews, William, Michael and Timothy Hilliker; a great-niece, Susan Matte; many cousins; and other relatives.

THOMAS W. “RED” BALLEW
Thomas W. “Red” Ballew, 81, of Marshall, Mo., died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at home. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 25, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel, Marshall, with officiator Ted Mountjoy. Music selections include “Amazing Grace” and “The World Is Not My Home,” with soloist Martha Wood, and pianist Julie Lewis. Burial in Sunset Gardens Cemetery, Marshall. Pallbearers include Carl Persinger, David Howerton, Steve Drake, Richard Drake, Waid Clemons and Gene Land. Visitation is 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, July 24, at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to the Fitzgibbon-Mary Montgomery Hospice.
Thomas was born April 7, 1919, in Lamine, Mo., to the late Eula Mae Ballew Tatham. He lived in Saline County most of his life.
He retired from the Marshall Lumber Co.
He was preceded in death by his mother; a sister, Dorothy Nugen; and a brother, Herman Mabrey. He is survived by five sons, Wayne Ballew, Lee’s Summit, Ron Ballew, Lexington, Mo., Don Ballew, Columbia, Mo., Billy Ray Campbell, Ashland, Mo., and Stanley Campbell, Booneville, Ark.; four daughters, Janet Childs, Independence, Sue Sims, Pacific, Patty Oornine, Fayette and Cecilia Prince, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a sister, Jo Clemons, Marshall; a brother, Gene Ballew, Bonner Springs, Kan.; 25 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a companion, Betty Drake, of the home, and her family.

MARY FRANCES CARAWAY McCULLY
Mary Frances Caraway McCully, 87, of Lee’s Summit, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at Lee’s Summit Hospital. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Thursday, July 27, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, with visitation from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, at the church with Rosary at 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Spirit Building Fund.
Mary was born June 30, 1913, in Clarendon, Texas, to Odos and Julia Taylor Caraway. She grew up in Clarendon, and graduated from the Incarnate Word College, San Antonio, Texas. She had been a resident of Lee’s Summit since 1977, and a member of the Holy Spirit Parish.
She was preceded in death by Michael M. McCully; Julie Mae Land; and two infant sons. She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary F. and Richard O. Welch, and Melissa L. and James A. Cross, all of Lee’s Summit; a son, Dr. Michael C. McCully, Grand Rapids, Mich.; grandchildren, Camille Gordon, Austin, Texas, Michael Welch and Patrick Welch, both of Lee’s Summit, Joseph Welch, Columbia, Mo., Adam Cross, San Diego, Calif., Katie Cross and Stephen Cross, both of Lee’s Summit, Alicia Roy, Eric McCully, Kathleen McCully and William McCully, all of Dallas, Texas; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Agnes Heironimus, Enid, Okla., and Betty Bell, Clarendon.

BERTHA LORENE RICE
Bertha Lorene Rice, 89, of Lee’s Summit, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at Village Care Center. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 25, at Langsford Funeral Home, Lee’s Summit. Graveside services are 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Marceline, Mo. Friends may visit from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday morning at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lee’s Summit Christian Church.
Lorene was born Jan. 5, 1911, in Ethel, Mo. Lorene was a private secretary in Kansas City, Kan., for many years. After retirement, she moved to John Knox Village. She enjoyed many years of activities in and around John Knox Village. She was a member of the Lee’s Summit Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John “Jack” Rice. She is survived by her son, Jack Rice, Kansas City; a brother, Harold Morgan, Marceline; a sister, Opal Callaham, Mendon, Mo.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

JAMES DOWLING ANDERSON
James Dowling Anderson, 59, passed away Monday, July 24, 2000, at his home. Private burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Maryville, Mo. The family receives friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, July 27, at the Ararat Shrine, 5100 Ararat Drive, two blocks west of I-435 at Eastwood Trafficway. A memorial service with a Rose Ceremony by the Royal Order of Jesters follows at 11 a.m. Thursday.
The family requests no flowers, and suggests memorials to the Salvation Army, the Shriners’ Hospitals for Children, c/o Ararat Shrine, or the charity of your choice.
Jim was born March 14, 1941, in Maryville. He began his law enforcement career in 1962, with six years on the Missouri State Highway Patrol. In 1968, he began his career with Jackson County, Mo., as undersheriff. He was appointed sheriff in 1991. He was elected as sheriff in 1992 and again in 1996. Jim has served a commendable 32 years with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the National Sheriff’s Institute. He was a member of the Missouri and National sheriff’s associations. Jim served on several executive boards including the Western Missouri Regional Law Enforcement Academy, Eastern Jackson County Drug Task Force and the Eastern Jackson County Youth Court. He was a member of the Summit Masonic Lodge No. 263, the Scottish Rite Bodies, Ararat Shrine Temple, the Royal Order of Jesters, the Order of Quetzalcoatl and Ararat Provost.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sheriff Earl M. and Beryl Frances Anderson; and a brother, Robert E. Anderson. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jacqueline; a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Lonnie Sherlock; two grandsons, Corey James and Casey Joe; two sisters, Marilyn Atchison, Holt Summit, Mo., and Barbara Swaney, Sioux City, Iowa; and numerous other relatives and friends.

MURL BACHMAN JR.
Murl Bachman Jr., 71, of Lee’s Summit died Monday, July 24, 2000, at St. Joseph Health Center, Kansas City, Mo. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Friday, July 28, at Langsford Funeral Home, Lee’s Summit, with burial in Lee’s Summit Cemetery, Lee’s Summit. Friends may call from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Bachman was born Feb. 7, 1929, in Centerville, Iowa. He was a graduate of Lee’s Summit High School, and a life-long resident of Lee’s Summit. He was a member of the Lee’s Summit Christian Church where he served as deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher and a member of the board of directors. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a truck driver for the Chicago-Kansas City Truck Lines and the Manley Truck Lines, and a member of the Teamsters Local No. 41. After his retirement, he worked for Colonial Nursery.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Bachman, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eric and Paula Bachman, and Mark and Jodie Bachman, all of Lee’s Summit; a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Bob Smith, Lee’s Summit; a brother, Robert Bachman, Lee’s Summit; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and Murl was looking forward to the arrival of two new great-grandchildren.

ROBERT HOUSTON DONNINGTON
Robert Houston Donnington, 78, of Sunrise Beach, Mo., formerly of Lee’s Summit, passed away Friday, July 21, 2000, at his home. Funeral services were 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, at Kidwell-Garber Laurie-Sunrise Beach Chapel, Laurie, Mo., with Rev. James Lawley officiating. The family received friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.
He was born June 28, 1922, in Lee’s Summit, the son of Houston and Rosa Shay Donnington. He married Florabel Grossheider, who preceded him in death, May 29, 1984. On July 19, 1986, he married Barbara Green Beller. Mr. Donnington was a retired truck driver for P.I.E. Truck Lines. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, member of the Zach Wheat American Legion Post No. 684, Sunrise Beach, and the Masonic Lodge, Lee’s Summit.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Donnington, of the home; a daughter, Sherry Donnington, Lee’s Summit; a step-son and daughter-in-law, John and Teresa Ensor, Laurie; two step-daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Terry Miller, Gravois Mills, and Janet and Ernie Hibdon, Laurie; a sister, Louie A. Trent, Lee’s Summit; six step-grandchildren; a nephew, Kevin Trent; and a niece, Connie Trent.
