JOSEPH SEIGEL “PAPA JOE” BARNETT
Joseph S. Barnett, 71, of Kansas City, Mo., passed away Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, while on vacation in California.
Joe fought a courageous battle with lung cancer.
A memorial service is 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at Park Lawn Funeral Home, 8251 Hillcrest, Kansas City. Cremation.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.
Joe was born Aug. 2, 1929, in Enid, Okla., and resided in the Kansas City area for 36 years.
He graduated from high school in Bentonville, Ark., in 1947.
Joe was a World War II U.S. Army Air Force veteran and a U.S. Navy Korean War veteran, serving for more than three years.
Joe retired from the Jackson County Tax Assessor’s Office in 1995.
He had been in sales for many years prior.
Joe had many passions including fishing, RVing, woodworking and gardening.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph S. Barnett; his mother, Ethel Barnett; three brothers, Clyde, Bert and Dwain Barnett; and his first wife, Leona D. Barnett.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Carol E. Barnett, of the home; two sisters, Frances Glen, Hunter, Okla., and Laurie Nickell, Gulfport, Miss.; five children and their spouses, Sandra Wilson, Joseph S. Barnett III, Michael Barnett, Peggy Becker and Debbie Schuler; seven grandchildren, Christine Barnett, Anthony and Virginia Wilson, Matthew and Lauren Beach, and Steven and Kevin Schuler; and many nieces and nephews.
Joe was a true friend to all who knew him.

GENNETTA MARIE BLUM
Gennetta Marie Blum, 41, of Lee’s Summit died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at Research Hospital.
Funeral services are 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Langsford Funeral Home, Lee’s Summit, with burial in Lee’s Summit.
Visitation is 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at the funeral home.
Gennetta was born Jan. 24, 1959, in Kansas City, Mo.
She was a full-time devoted wife and mother.
She was active in the PTA at Lee’s Summit Elementary School.
She worked part-time for Peak Auctioneering.
She was a loving, compassionate and kind daughter of God.
She helped and touched lives.
She will be deeply missed by all.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Jibson.
She is survived by her husband, Lewis Earl Blum; two sons, Randy and Dustin; a daughter, Ashley; three sisters, Mary Margaret Poff, Sandra Kay Reeves and Diana Hansen; and five brothers, Joseph Jolley, Terry Phelps, James Jolley, Tom Maupin and Wayne Winters.

MILDRED M. GOVER
Mildred M. Gover, 79, of Lee’s Summit died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, in Fayetteville, Ark.
Funeral services are 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at Langsford Funeral Home, Lee’s Summit, with burial Lee’s Summit Cemetery, Lee’s Summit.
Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Longview Baptist Church, Lee’s Summit.
Mildred was born Sept. 4, 1920, to Mathew N. and Viola Oglesby.
She married Everett S. Gover on Feb. 8, 1946.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Gover was a member of Longview Baptist Church, Lee’s Summit.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a sister, Bertha Newton; and a brother, Alfred Oglesby.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and John Steele, Golden City, and Dorothy and Terry Howerton, Kansas City; a son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Mary Jo Gover, West Fork, Ark.; a granddaughter, Nicole Gover, West Fork; five grandsons and two granddaughters-in-law, Jon and Sandi Greener, Lee’s Summit, David and Vicki Greener, Pittsburg, Kan., Matthew Howerton and Daniel Howerton, both of Kansas City, and Mike Gover, West Fork; three sisters, Gena Sheppard, Kansas City, Nadine McLaughlin, Grain Valley, Mo., and Ruth Reed, Independence; and two brothers, Loren Oglesby, Independence, and Mathew Oglesby, Lee’s Summit.

HARRY A. RICHARDSON
Harry A. Richardson, 81, of Lee’s Summit died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at his home.
Memorial services are 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Fifth and South Green, Lee’s Summit.
Private inurnment at Memorial Park Cemetery, Kansas City, Mo., precedes the memorial service.
The Choral Eucharist will be celebrated by the Right Rev. Dr. Arthur A. Vogel, Fifth Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Missouri, and the Rev. Margaret Foster Ruth, Deacon.
The family greets friends following the service in the church parish hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church, or St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School, 4041 Main St., Kansas City, MO 64111, where his grandchildren attend.
Mr. Richardson retired after 40 years a general contractor in the metropolitan Kansas City area and Tubac, Ariz.
He will be remembered and celebrated for his commitment to his family, work and church.

ERNEST CLAUDE SHAFFER
Ernest Claude Shaffer, 95, of Lee’s Summit died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at John Knox Care Center.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at Lee’s Summit United Methodist Church, with a Masonic Service following, burial in Lee’s Summit Cemetery.
Friends may call from 1 p.m. to service time Saturday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to charities of your choice.
Claude was born Jan. 1, 1905, in Cowgill, Mo.
He attended high school in Kingston, Mo., and graduated the University of Missouri-Maryville in 1928.
He was the owner/ operator of Shaffer Pontiac in Lee’s Summit from 1941 to 1960.
Claude was also active in the formation of water districts No. 5 and 9 in Cass County, Mo., and the owner/ developer of the Walnut Grove subdivision in Pleasant Hill, Mo., and Shaffer Estates in Harrisonville, Mo.
He married Helen Collins Shaffer in 1942, and shared his entire adult life with her in Lee’s Summit.
His many activities and achievements included being a past president of the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce, the Jackson County Chamber and the Greater Kansas City Chamber; a lifetime achievement award from MAACO; serving on the budget committee for United Way; being first chairman of the executive committee to build and equip a hospital in Lee’s Summit.
He was a charter member of Lee’s Summit Rotary Club, 1961; and had 100 percent attendance.
He was a Paul Harris Fellow, and a member of the Rotary Group Study Exchange Committee.
He was a member of the Missouri and National Cattleman’s associations.
He was a member of Lee’s Summit Lodge No. 263, the Kansas City Scottish Rite, the Ararat Shrine Temple, as well as Greeters in the Ararat Temple.
Claude was a longtime active member of the Lee’s Summit United Methodist Church, and served several years on the district site location committee.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Rayburn, Glenn and Forrest Shaffer; and two sisters, Gladys Kleeman and Gail Shaffer.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen Shaffer, Lee’s Summit; a brother, Lawrence Shaffer, Lee’s Summit; a sister, Ruby Fuhr, Braymer, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

NINA AULT
Nina Ault, 88, of Lake Lotawana died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at John Knox Village Care Center.
Memorial services are 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, at Community Baptist Church, Lake Lotawana.
Memorial contributions may be made to Prairie Rescue Unit, or Lotawana Memorial Rose Garden, or Kansas City Hospice.
Nina was born Sept. 19, 1911, in Waverly, Mo.
She was well known in her earlier years in the Kansas City area for being the first woman in Missouri to be certified to referee girls basketball nationally.
She became the first woman controller supervisor in the country in 1965.
After spending 30 years working for the Federal Aviation Administration, she retired in 1972.
Since then she has worked as a real estate agent with Will Fardon in Lake Lotawana.
Nina was an avid bowler and loved to fish for bass.
She loved to play bridge and bingo.
She served 10 terms on the Lake Lotawana Board of Aldermen and six years as treasurer of the community club.
She was preceded in death by parents, Tom and Gertrude Ault; two brothers, George and Marion; and a sister, Ruth Evelyn.
She is survived by a sister, Alberta Miller, Deland, Fla.; two brothers, Ray Ault, Shawnee, Kan., and Chas F. Ault, Orrick, Mo.; nieces, nephews; and many wonderful friends and neighbors.
She will be missed by all.
