Avah Garrison

PIERCE CITY, Mo. - Services for Avah Lela Garrison, 91, Pierce City, who died Wednesday, April 9, 1997, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Countryside Christian Church in Monett.
Bruce Hayes will officiate and burial will be in Pierce City Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Wessell Funeral Home, Pierce City, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.
The name of a daughter, Laura Alambaugh, was misspelled in an obituary in Thursday's Globe.

Alice Riggs

WEBB CITY, Mo. - Alice Marie Riggs, 73, Vicksburg, Miss., formerly of Webb City, died Wednesday, April 9, 1997, at her home after a long illness. Mrs. Riggs was born Dec. 3, 1923, at Webb City.
She had lived in Webb City most of her life.
She moved to Vicksburg five years ago.
She was an accountant at the Warren County Clerk's Office, Vicksburg.
She was a member of Hawkins Methodist Church, Vicksburg.
She was a Girl Scout and Rainbow leader in Vicksburg.
She married Bernard Riggs. He survives.
Other survivors include a son, Jeff Riggs, Vicksburg; a daughter, Janice Riggs, Vicksburg; a sister, Baleta Rogers, Memphis, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Mount Hope Cemetery, Webb City.
Rev. Tim Rudd will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Simpson Funeral Home, Webb City.

Waunita Fern (Mammy) Shilling

Waunita Fern (Mammy) Shilling, age 87, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2002, at Freeman Hospital, after a short illness.
Waunita was born July 18, 1914 to Marcus and Isa Chambers Yost on Beef Branch, south of Joplin, and lived in the area most of her life.
She was a graduate of Joplin High School.
She married Clarence W. Shilling April 1, 1933, in Columbus, Kan.
He preceded her in death in 1994.
She is also preceded in death by her son, Arlen Dale Shilling.
She worked as manager of shipping and receiving at Newman’s and many other jobs while farming their property.
She was a member of the Oak Grove Community Chapel.
She was also a member of many organizations, including C.S.C.C. Extension Club, North Newton County Democrat Club, Farm Bureau, The Blind Association, as well as serving as a 4-H Leader and clerk for the Spring Valley School Board for many years.
She is survived by her daughter, Janice VanDorn and her husband, Richard, of Joplin; Don Shilling and his wife, Evelyn, of Joplin; her sister, Winola Hood of Neosho; 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m., at the College Heights Christian Church.
Gerald Griffin and Rick Bushnell will officiate.
Burial will be at the Spring Valley Cemetery, near Tipton Ford.
Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Mason-Woodard Mortuary.
Her family has requested that memorial gifts be given to the Oak Grove Community Chapel.

Thomas Alfred McBride

Thomas Alfred McBride, 84, Granby, Mo., died Sunday evening, June 23, 2002, at Freeman Neosho Hospital, following a short illness.
He was born May 15, 1918 in Indian Creek, Texas to Coit B. and Cora Annie (Knape) McBride.
He served in the Army during World War II with a tank battalion.
He moved to the area from Indian Creek, Texas in 1952.
He was a welder for General Steel in Joplin and also worked for Rocketdyne for 10 years.
He was a member of the Newtonia Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for many years.
Thomas married Eula Faye Harvey June 30, 1944 in Brownwood, Texas.
She preceded him in death June 24, 2000.
He is survived by two sons, Thomas Dwayne McBride of Shrewsbury, Mass. and Jerry W. McBride of Neosho, Mo.; two brothers, C.B. McBride of Orlando, Fla. and Wendell McBride of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Lella McBride of Brownwood, Texas; four grandchildren, Jeff McBride, Stacy McBride Edgar, Matt McBride and Tammy McBride Harris; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. June 26, 2002 at the Granby Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at the Newtonia I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Newtonia, Mo.
Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday, June 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
The family will be at the home of Mr. McBride, 15640 Shetland Drive, Granby, Mo.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Newtonia Baptist Church in care of Clark Funeral Home, P.O. Box 66, Neosho, Mo. 64850.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clark Funeral Home, Neosho, Mo.

Ruth Sappington

NEOSHO, Mo. - Ruth Evans Sappington, 96, 400 Lyons Drive, Neosho, died at 5:50 p.m. Wednesday, April, 9, 1997, at a nursing home after a long illness.
Mrs. Sappington was born Sept. 25, 1900, in Wheaton, and was a lifetime area resident.
She had worked as a clerk at the MFA Exchange and was a homemaker.
She was a member of United Methodist Church.
She married Charles Sappington in Barry County.
He died in 1951. She is survived by a brother, Tom Evans, Neosho; and two sisters, Melba Francis, Neosho, and Lora Condit, Dover, N.H. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Muncie Chapel Cemetery, Wheaton, under the direction of Clark Funeral Home, Neosho.
The Rev. R.C. Harp will officiate.

Margaret Smith

CARTHAGE, Mo. - Margaret G. Smith, 82, 1901 Buena Vista, Carthage, died at 1:15 a.m. Friday, April 11, 1997, at McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage, after a long illness.
Mrs. Smith was born March 12, 1915, at Oregon, Mo.
She moved to Carthage in 1960 from Forest City.
She was a practical nurse. Survivors include two brothers, Ray Brock, Forest City, and Loyal Eugene Brock, St. Joseph.
Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Paradise Cemetery, north of Carthage, with the Rev. Joe Rychcikstet officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Knell Mortuary, Carthage.

Harry Suess

NEOSHO, Mo. - Harry Suess, 79, Neosho, died at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 1997, at a nursing home after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Suess was born March 2, 1917, at Davenport, Iowa.
He came to Neosho in the early 1940s from Iowa.
He had worked as a chef for the former Big Spring Inn and Vic's Cafe.
He then worked at Sunbeam Leisure Products until he retired.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
His wife, Velda Suess, died Dec. 7, 1980.
There are no immediate survivors.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Neosho IOOF Cemetery under the direction of Clark Funeral Home.
Bill Towery, minister, will officiate.

Michael Wiele

ORONOGO, Mo. - Michael R. Wiele, 49, Oronogo, died at 10:08 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 1997, St. John's Medical Center, Joplin, after four years of ill health.
Mr. Wiele was born Dec. 16, 1947, in Hastings, Neb., and moved to Oronogo in 1979 from Fairbanks, Alaska. He was employed as a meat cutter with Safeway Co. in Fairbanks.
He retired in 1979 because of ill health.
He was married to Kay Jones on July 29, 1966 in Perry, Kan. She survives. Additional survivors include a son, Pat Wiele, Carl Junction; a daughter, Kerry Moll, Joplin; his mother, Margrete Wiele, Alba; a brother, Pat Wiele, Liberty Lake, Wash., and two grandchildren. The body has been cremated.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Hedge-Lewis Funeral Home, Webb City, with Jim Covert officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service.

Nellie I. Jameson

JOPLIN, Mo. - Nellie I. Jameson, age 92, of Morrison, Colo., a longtime Joplin resident, passed away at 9:15 p.m. Monday, July 1, 2002, at the Sun Bridge Bear Creek Care Center in Morrison.
Mrs. Jameson was born December 29, 1909 in Duenweg, Mo., and lived in Joplin most of her life, until moving to Morrison four years ago.
She retired as a clerk with the former Kresgee’s Dime Store in Joplin.
She was a member of the Oakland Christian Church of Joplin and played the church organ for years.
She married Joseph W. Jameson October 15, 1929 in Joplin.
He preceded her in death on November 7, 1995.
Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne Jameson, Littleton, Colo.; a son, Danny Jameson, Moore, Okla.; five grandchildren, R.A. Plummer III, Tiffany Engstrom, Jessica Jameson, Danny Mike Jameson and Kristi Jameson; and five great-grandchildren, Cole and Flynn Plummer, and Brandon, Kory and Dakota Jameson.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. Saturday until the service at Mason-Woodard Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the Sun Bridge Bear Creek Care Center in care of Mason-Woodard Mortuary, 3701 East 7th Street, Joplin, Mo. 64801.
