Max Beck

Max E. Beck, 52, 2610 Indiana, Joplin, died at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 17, 1997, at Barne's Hospital, St. Louis, after six months of ill health. Mr. Beck was born July 15, 1944, in Greenfield. He was raised and attended school in Ash Grove. After graduating from high school he came to Joplin. He was graduated from the Southwest Baptist University in Boliver. He was a salesman for the Butternut Bread Co., Joplin, and had worked in the bakery business for more than 30 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Joplin, where he also served as deacon. From 1962 to 1970, he was a member of the Missouri National Guard and he coached youths and adults in various Joplin softball leagues.

He married Brenda Robberson on March 1, 1953, in Walnut Grove. She survives.

Additional survivors include a son, Shawn Beck, Joplin; a daughter, Tracy Thorne, Joplin; his parents, Elliott and Doris Beck, Ash Grove; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church. Duane Trimble, minister, will officiate. Burial will be in the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery, Joplin.

Pallbearers will be Bob Findley, Barry Huff, Paul Johnson, Alex Cupp, Jim Kenner and Lynn Royale.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary, Joplin.

Contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Youth Scholarship Fund, Joplin.

Tony March

Anthony Charles "Tony" March, 81, Joplin, died at 5:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 18, 1997, at his home after a long illness.

Mr. March was born Jan. 6, 1916, in Moberly. He moved to Joplin from Derby, Kan., in 1982. He was a past resident of Kirksville. He was self-employed in the fabrication of sheet metal, before retiring in 1978. He was a member of the Joplin Radio Control Club and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, No. 7253, Derby. He attended the Mary the Immaculate Catholic Church, Kirksville. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

He married Frances Satterfield on Oct. 14, 1944. She died Nov. 16, 1975.

He married Wilma Ludwig Kiphart on April 20, 1982, in Miami. She survives.

Additional survivors include a son, Charles Anthony "Chuck" March, Joplin; a daughter, Marguriete Goddard, Las Vegas, Nev.; a stepson, Marc L. Kiphart, Joplin; a brother, Paul V. March, Chillicothe, Ill.; three sisters, Mary L. Crnic and Eleanor F. Treasure, both of Kirksville, and Cecilia Hatfield, Atkinson, Neb.; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Parker Mortuary. Services and burial will be in Kirksville under the direction of Davis-Payne Funeral Home, Kirksville.

Janie Parker

Janie Sara Parker, 93, Ocala, Fla., a former Joplin resident, died at 11 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 15, 1997, at an Ocala area nursing home after a one-year illness.

Mrs. Parker was born Aug. 2, 1903, in Paris, Ark. She was a longtime Joplin resident, moving to the state of Florida seven years ago. She was a member of the Christian Church, Rebeckah Lodge, and the Garden Club, all in Joplin.

She married Edgar T. Parker on July 6, 1924, in Joplin. He died Feb. 9, 1973.

Survivors include a son, L.R. Parker, Gas City, Kan.; a daughter, Wathena Watts, Oklawaha, Fla.; a sister, Agnes Estep, Russellville, Ark; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary. The Rev. Larry Six will officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Park Cemetery, Joplin.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Hazel Short

Hazel G. Short, 82, Branson, formerly of Joplin, died at 1:22 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17, 1997, at Skaggs Community Health Care Center, Branson, after a long illness.

Mrs. Short was born Oct. 10, 1914, Leslie, Ark. She had lived in Webb City and Joplin. She lived in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s in Branson, where she managed a motel and was a waitress. She was also a homemaker.

Her husband, Russell William Short, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, William Raymond Short, Joplin; a sister, Jessie Seaman, Branson; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. today at Ozarks Memorial Park Cemetery at Branson.

Arrangements are under the direction of Snapps Funeral Home, Branson.

Earl Wilson

Earl D. Wilson, 80, Joplin, died at 9:50 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 1997, at his home after a long illness.

Mr. Wilson was born Jan. 1, 1917, at Neosho. He lived most of his life in Joplin. He had been a truck driver for TRISM of Joplin. He was also a security guard for several years. He served in the Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of the Earl J. Bruton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 535 at Joplin.

He has no immediate survivors.

Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Monday at New Salem Cemetery, west of Neosho. The Rev. Fred Shellenberger will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.

T.J. Anderson

CARTHAGE, Mo. - Thomas "T.J." Anderson, 68, Carthage, died at 1:13 p.m., Friday, Jan. 17, 1997, at Freeman Hospital West, Joplin, after a short illness.

He was born March 4, 1928, in Jane. He had lived in the Carthage area since 1952. He had worked at the Eagle-Picher mines, in the state of Kansas, and had been the owner and operator for 12 years of Anderson Refuse in Carthage.

He was employed for 33 years at what is now ICI Explosives, retiring in 1986. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He married Lucille Le Gore on Nov. 10, 1945, in Anderson. She survives.

Additional survivors include a son, Tom Anderson, Carthage; three daughters, Sheryl McKelvy, Tulsa, Okla., and Dixie Vacca and Sue Barton, both of Carthage; a brother, John Anderson, Joplin; a sister, Mae Boston, Goodman; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Ulmer Funeral Home, Carthage. Boyce Mouton, minister, will officiate. Burial will be in the Park Cemetery, Carthage.

Pallbearers will be Brent Hensley, Darin Alumbaugh, Rusty Snyder, Lewis Amato, Mike Powelson, Brad Anderson, Ryan Cooper and Wesley Hunt.

Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Phillip Davis

PIERCE CITY, Mo. - Phillip Harvey Davis, 87, Strafford, a former resident of the Pierce City area, died at 4:45 p.m., Friday, Jan. 17, 1997, at his home after a short illness.

Mr. Davis was born Nov. 6, 1909, in Anthony, Kan. He was a retired cattle and grain farmer and a retired corporal for Kansas National Guard. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Anthony Masonic Lodge, No. 200, Agent Free and Accepted Freemasons, both of Strafford.

He married Roma Gish on June 14, 1933, in Anthony. She survives.

Additional survivors include a son, Pat Davis, Strafford; a daughter, Sandra Bell, Springfield; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lakin Funeral Home, Pierce City. The Rev. Obie Harrup will officiate. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery, Monett.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made to the youth program at Assembly of God Church, Strafford, in care of the funeral home.
