William John Hilgert, noted photographer and assistant professor of art at Webster University, died Sunday, July 28, 2002 of lymphoma. He was 47 years old.
Mr. Hilgert grew up in Webster Groves, and attended St. Louis Community College at Meramec. In 1981, he graduated from Webster University with a bachelor's degree in photography. He earned a master's degree, also in photography, at Washington University School of Fine Arts. He was an adjunct photography instructor at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park, Washington University, St. Louis University, Webster University and University of Missouri-St. Louis. In 1999, he took a position as assistant professor of art at Webster University, where he stayed until his death. While at Webster, he was coordinator of the university's Cecille R. Hunt Gallery.
Mr. Hilgert was a recipient of the 1988 National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Photography; 1989 Polaroid Corp. Artist Grant; and a 1989-91 Missouri Arts Council Biennial Award winner. He had been an editor of River Styx literary magazine, and a past president of the Society for Photographic Education-Midwest Region. His work has been included in national and international exhibits, including the Bottomlands Exhibition at the Forum for Contemporary Art in St. Louis.
Mr. Hilgert is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Millard; a sister, Blair Lavagna; and a brother, Clement "Buddy" Hilgert Jr.
A memorial service is being arranged for Saturday, Aug. 17. Memorial contributions may be made to the John Hilgert Memorial Fund, Webster University, 470 East Lockwood Avenue, Webster Groves, Mo., 63119.

Harvey M. Hinderer, brother-in-law of William H. Pfitzinger and the late Fred D. Pfitzinger of Pfitzinger Funeral Home, died Saturday, March 16, 2002. He was 95.
Mr. Hinderer was a resident of New Bern, N.C., at the time of his death. He served in the military, and was an engineer in the aircraft industry.
Mr. Hinderer was the husband of the late Emma (Billie) Hinderer and the late Victoria L. Hinderer; father of Joan (Irwin) Hamlin, Sue (Paul) Rascher, Carol (Herb) Glover, Gloria (Ken) Mikyska, and the late Bobby (Barb) Benson. He was the grandfather of six, and great-grandfather of 10.
Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery in Kirkwood. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, and the Arthritis Foundation.

Mabel Hollander, (nee Gross), died Tuesday, July 2, 2002.
Mrs. Hollander was the wife of the late Robert Hollander; mother of Jim (Abby) Hollander and Bobbie (Bob) Schaper; grandmother of Katie Hollander.
Private services were held. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated. Arrangements by Bopp Chapel in Kirkwood.

Larry D. Horak, retired teacher and resident of Webster Groves, died peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, from complications of colon cancer.
Mr. Horak taught for a total of 38 years, 33 of which were in the Webster Groves School District. The last 23 years of his career were spent at Webster Groves High School, where he chaired the science department and taught biology, human anatomy and physiology. Mr. Horak began his teaching career at Columbus High School in Waterloo, Iowa, for four years before moving to Webster.
During the past few months of his illness, Mr. Horak, 64, received more than 700 cards and letters from former students all over the country, thanking him and calling him the best teacher they ever had. As one former student put it: "I am who I am because of you." Doctoral dissertations were dedicated to him by former students as a tribute to his impact on their lives.
Though teaching was of the utmost importance, Mr. Horak believed in giving back to the community in other ways. In the mid-1960s, he was one of the co-founders of the Holy Redeemer Grade School Commission, now the PTO. He was a member of the North Central Association visitation team for the accreditation of many schools in the area.
He and his wife, Lois, served on the retreat board of the Benedictine Family Life Center in Pevely, Mo. They also dedicated themselves to those living with HIV and AIDS and their care-givers, working through Food Outreach, St. Louis Effort for AIDS, and as team members for the Heartsong Retreat program.
Mr. Horak was also appointed by the Rev. Lawrence Biondi to be the community-at-large representative on the Animal Care Committee at Saint Louis University Medical School. He was a member of St. Peter Parish in Kirkwood and Our Lady of the Gulf Parish in Gulf Shores, Ala.
In addition to teaching and serving others, Mr. Horak's passions were his family, gourmet cooking, and traveling to his favorite haunts, New Orleans and his beach home in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Mr. Horak was born on July 6, 1938 in Waterloo. He was the only child of Milton and Irene Horak. He received his undergraduate degree in biology education from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. He was awarded a National Science Department Academic Year Institute to pursue an advanced degree from Washington University in St. Louis; he earned a master of science degree from that institution in 1966.
He is survived by his wife and partner of 42 years, the former Lois Duffy. The couple met when he was seven years old and she was six. They were married at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Waterloo, Iowa, on July 30, 1960. He is also survived by his mother, Irene Horak, of Waterloo, Iowa; two sons, Christopher (Robin) of Falls Church, Vir.; David (Liberty) of Webster Groves; and two daughters, Ellen (Joe) Sartorius of Sappington and Susan (Todd) Campbell of St. Peters.
Mr. Horak enjoyed seven grandchildren: Andrew, Emily, Madeline, Benjamin and Hannah Sartorius and Victoria and Teddy Campbell.
Visitation for Mr. Horak will be from noon until 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29, at Gerber Chapel, 23 W. Lockwood in Webster Groves. A celebration of his life and funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30, 11 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic School Gymnasium, West Jefferson at Clay in Kirkwood. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Larry D. Horak memorial Fund, care of Webster Groves High School, 100 Selma Ave., Webster Groves, Mo. 63119.

Charles A. Howell, of Kirkwood, died Friday, July 12, 2002. He was 76 years old.
Mr. Howell was the son of the late Helen M. Howell (nee Straub) and Fred W. Howell. He was a credit manager in the shoe industry, and a member of the Catholic church.
Mr. Howell is survived by his daughter, Theresa Moehrle, and sons Charles K. Howell, Gregory J. (Diana) Howell, and Stephen (Cherie) Howell; grandfather of six, and great-grandfather of two.
A funeral Mass was held Tuesday, July 16, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Kirkwood. Interment, Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Peter Church or the American Cancer Society.

Mary Kathryn (Mary Kay) Howell (Settles), formerly of Webster Groves and Kirkwood, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002. She was 81 years old.
Mrs. Howell was born May 20, 1920, in Hannibal, Mo. She moved to the St. Louis area in 1940 and to Lee's Summit in 1991. She retired in 1985. She was an avid traveler and bridge player, and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lee's Summit as well as many bridge clubs.
Mrs. Howell was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew Jackson (Jack) Settles and Lenna Greening Settles of Hannibal; and her husband, Charles A. (Charlie) Howell Jr.
Mrs. Howell is survived by her son Jack, his wife Cathy, and their son Matthew of Lee's Summit, Mo. and son Brian of San Diego, Calif.; her son Joe and his wife Ronnie and their sons Neil and Mark Patras of Elk River, Minn.; her sister Dorothy Jane (Dottie) McMein of Kirkwood; two nephews; four great nieces and nephews; and a host of bridge-playing friends.
Arrangements were made through Smith Funeral Home; interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Hannibal, Mo.
The family requests no flowers and suggests memorial contributions to the John Knox Village Hospice or the American Lung Association.

Jacob Henry Huber, of Shrewsbury, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2002.
Mr. Huber was the husband of Clarean (nee Pralle) Huber; father of Barbara Ann (Wayne) Warnecke, Thomas Pralle (Linda) Huber, Mary Beth "Mimi" (Michael) Hammack, and James Michael (Margie) Huber. He was a grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.
Mr. Huber was a member of the Knights of Columbus St. Louis Assembly #565, Webster Groves Knights of Columbus #2119, Shrewsbury Lions, 50+ Club St. Michael's, Shrewsburians, American Legion #632 and VFW #10350 of Lake St. Louis.
Visitation was held Monday, Aug. 26 at Gerber Chapel in Webster Groves. A funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Aug. 27 at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Shrewsbury. Private entombment was at Valhalla Mausoleum.
Memorials may be made to St. Michael the Archangel Church, 7622 Sutherland Ave., Shrewsbury, Mo., 63119.

Jane Elizabeth Hicks Hueppelsheuser, formerly of Webster Groves, died on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen, Tex. Mrs. Hueppelsheuser, 79, was living in Port Isabel, Tex.
She was born in Rocky Mount, N.C., on Dec. 16, 1922, the daughter of the late Herman and Olivia Hardy. She married Arthur Leslie Hicks on Oct. 18, 1945. He preceded her in death on Aug. 11, 1976 in Webster Groves.
She is survived by her husband, Clyde "Hip" Hueppelsheuser. The couple was married on July 15, 1994.
She is survived by a son, James Hicks of Bradenton, Fla.; a daughter, Elizabeth Thatcher of Maplewood, Mo.; two granddaughters, Christine Smith of Owensville, Mo. and Sharisse Sennholtz of Cottage Hills, Ill.; a daughter, Olivia Louise Quinlan (Greg) and two grandsons, James and Nicholas Quinlan of Cuba, Mo.; a son, Jonathan Hicks (Kristina) and two granddaughters, Dallason and Madison of Edwardsville, Ill.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Jo Chaples, on April 4, 1995.
Mrs. Hueppelsheuser was a member of St. Andrews by the Sea Church and Head of the local Episcopal Church Women. She retired in 1987 from the State of Missouri Department of Family Services.
Services will be at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 9 S. Bompart Ave. in Webster Groves, on Saturday, March 2, at 3 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Clarence J. Inman Jr., a resident of Kirkwood, died Thursday, April 18, 2002. He was the husband of June L. Inman (nee Helton); and father of Stephen J. Inman, Deborah L. Myles, Steven L. Wymer, Michael L. Wymer, Patricia L. Doran, the late Michael J. Inman and the late Mary Elizabeth Inman.
Mr. Inman was a member of the Elks Lodge BPOE of Oakville. He worked as a manufacturer's representative for a storage equipment company and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Interment was at the National Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital.
