Dr. Joseph Alfred Hale

Dr. Joseph Alfred Hale, 76, of Holly Springs, died Friday, May 4, 2007, at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Memphis, Tenn. Born in Senatobia on July 7, 1930 to Emmette Franklin Hale, Sr. and Nannie May Hale, Dr. Hale graduated from Senatobia City School and attended Northwest Mississippi Junior College and the University of Mississippi. After graduation from the University of Tennessee Dental School he moved to Holly Springs where he practiced dentistry for 39 years.

Dr. Hale was renowned for his beautiful antebellum homes and his large selection of antiques. Through the years he owned three homes in Holly Springs; White Pillars, Grey Gables, and Hilltop, that were featured on the Holly Springs Garden Club’s annual tour. He also opened his home by request for many private tours. After retirement, he traveled extensively, pursuing his interest in antiques and the restoration of his antebellum home. Dr. Hale was an active member of Holly Springs First Baptist Church, an Army veteran and a member and past president of the Holly Springs Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a past president of the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce. He was an accomplished musician, who played the piano and keyboard at First Baptist Church in Holly Springs and often entertained visitors who came to tour his home with his music.

Services were held at Holly Springs First Baptist Church Sunday, May 6, at 2 p.m. Graveside services were at 4 p.m. at Bethesda Cemetery in Senatobia. Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves a sister-in-law, Evelyn Hale of Senatobia; a niece, Patricia McLarty of Austin, Texas; six nephews, Mike McLarty of Oxford, Phil McLarty of Malvern, Arkansas, Emmette Hale, III of Oxford, Steve and Cindy Hale, David and Sharon Hale and Tim Hale, all of Senatobia; 13 great nieces and nephews; special friends, David and Sherry Childers and family of Holly Springs and Dotty Sanders of Memphis; and caretakers, John Anderson and Delores Taylor of Holly Springs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Mildred Hale McLarty, brother, Emmette Franklin Hale, Jr., and niece, Diane McLarty.

Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church of Holly Springs.

Dustin Wade Joyner

Dustin Wade Joyner, 21, of Slayden, died May 4, 2007. He was a construction worker.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on May 7 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Carey Chapel.

He leaves his parents, Billy and Kim Joyner of Slayden; two sisters, Brandy Hataway, Jessica Joyner, both of Slayden; grandparents, Carrol and Joyce Frank of Moscow, Tenn.; grandmother, Shirley Moore of Olive Branch; grandfather, Edgar Joyner Jr. of Slayden; and great-grandparents, Edgar and Lena Joyner Sr. of Slayden.

Pallbearers were David Smith, Kyle Kennedy, Keith McClure, Chris Tutor, Wayne Anderson and Rick Bolden. Honorary pallbearer was J.R. Ramage.

Clebert Markle Jr.

Clebert Markle Jr., 67, of Olive Branch, died May 2, 2007 at his home. He was a retired carpenter with Markle and Son Construction.

A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. on May 4 at Brantley Funeral Home in Olive Branch.

He leaves his ex-wife and close friend, Brenda Markle; four children, Melinda Chandler, Cindy Youngblood, Anita Brown, all of Olive Branch, Bert Markle of Byhalia; four sisters, Mary Partridge, Pat Mills, Carol Whitten, Darlean Herrod; three brothers, Darrell, David and Bobby Markle; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Leroy R. Nichols Sr.

Leroy R. Nichols Sr., 83, of Potts Camp, died May 1, 2007 at his home. He was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church in Waterford, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired truck driver with Consolidated Freightways.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on May 4 at Brantley Funeral Home in Olive Branch. Burial was in Nichols Memorial Park in Potts Camp.

He leaves his wife of 58 years, Lillian Nichols; eight children, Peggy Rhoda, Edith Horgan, Leroy R. Nichols Jr., Donald Ray Nichols, Rita Waddle, Randy Nichols, Linda Nichols, Rickey Nichols; two brothers; four sisters; 20 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and a granddaughter.

Emmett Reeds

Emmett Reeds, 70, died May 3, 2007. He worked for Gholson Exxon/Germantown Exxon, Germantown, Tenn., from 1955 until 1994.

Services were held 1 p.m. on May 7 at Collierville Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Memorial Park in Memphis.

He leaves his wife, Bennie Duncan Reeds; a daughter, Bonnie Reeds McCleary; a son, Clint Emmet Reeds III; and five grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Hospital, any animal shelter, Australian Shepherd Rescue Group or any charity of the donor’s choice.

Nellie R. Smith

Nellie R. Smith, 92, of Byhalia, died May 2, 2007 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-East, Memphis, Tenn. She was the widow of Joel Smith. She was a member of the Nazarene Church, and a Pink Lady at McNairy County General Hospital.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on May 5 at Lake Hill Memorial Gardens, Bethel Springs, Tenn. Burial was in Lake Hill Memorial Gardens. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Selmer was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves four daughters, Marjorie White of Byhalia, Naomi Armour of Selmer, Tenn., Jimmie Faye Stribling of Memphis, Tenn., Shirley Lane of Memphis, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 23 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a son, James Robert Smith, who was killed in action in Korea.

Pallbearers were Landon Lane, Jimmy Lane, J.F. Finzo, Joe Bryant, Michael Burkett and Jesse A. Ferrell.

Ruthie Lemons St. John

Ruthie Lemons St. John, 75, of Potts Camp, died May 2, 2007 at Methodist Central in Memphis, Tenn. She was a member of First Baptist Potts Camp Church.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on May 6 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Bethlehem Methodist Cemetery. Bro. Jim Buchanan officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves three sons, John Wayne St. John of Whiteville, Tenn., James Stephin St. John, Bobby Eugene St. John, both of Potts Camp; a brother, A.Q. Lemons of Potts Camp; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Kenny Dickerson, Larry Hall, Arnie McMullen, Chuck Thomas, John Mansel, Ronnie Joe Bennett, Mike Lemons, Evan Lemons and Brian Cheatwood.

Daisy Hollowell White

Daisy Hollowell White, 81, of Water Valley, died May 4, 2007 at Baptist Hospital, Oxford. She was a Christian and a member of Sylva Rena Baptist Church. She was a retired nurse, VFW Auxiliary member and a volunteer and member of the Pink Ladies.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on May 7 at Seven Oaks Funeral Home Chapel in Water Valley. Burial was in Campground Cemetery.

She leaves her husband, Tom White; four daughters, Della K. Pitts of Waterford, Marie Paullus of Arlington, Tenn., Pam Samuels of Water Valley, Shirley House of Bourbaniese, Ill.; two sons, Lee Hollowell of Elizabethtown, Ky., William White of Baltimore, Md.; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
