Nina Taylor Johnson

Nina Taylor Johnson, 94, of Victoria, died Dec. 26, 2006 in Memphis, Tenn. A lifelong resident of Victoria, she was affectionately known as “Mama Nina.” She was educated at Rust High School department and began teaching shorty thereafter. She graduated from Rust College in 1950 with a B.S. in education, and became a full-time elementary school teacher in the Marshall County School System, where she taught and inspired students for more than 40 years. She also taught for a period in the public school system in the state of Arkansas. After retiring, she continued her commitment to education by assisting countless students in their pursuit of higher education. Through her philanthropic efforts, annual financial contributions were made to Rust College. She was a dedicated member of Taylor’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Victoria, which was founded by her grandparents, the late Minerva and Joseph Earl Taylor Sr. She taught Sunday school for numerous years and was a respected “Mother” of the church.

Services were held at 12 noon on Dec. 30 at Taylor’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Victoria. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pastor L. Juanita Booker officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two daughters, Edna Wright of Memphis, Tenn., Barbara Longest of Holly Springs; two sisters, Rever Goodwin of St. Louis, Mo., Irma Cummings of Battle Creek, Mich.; four granddaughters and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were David E. Wright, M. Seth Mott, Gregory Lacey, Shabaka ji Jaga, Wallace Longest, David M. Wright, Charles Hauer and Ahart Wilson. Honorary pallbearers were Christopher Hauer, Matthew Hauer, Michael W. Mott, Opher Lee Neely, Bishop Mays, Rust College Alumni, Marshall County Chapter, Mississippi Retired Teachers Association, Marshall County Chapter.

She was preceded in death by four siblings, Segretta T. Hall, Ardessa Cannon, Alberta Glass and Berdell Taylor; and Elmo (Boss) Stinson, whom she cared for until his death.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to the Nina Taylor Johnson Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Dr. David L. Beckley, President, Rust College, 150 Rust Avenue, Holly Springs, MS 38635.

Larry Emmerson Luke Jr.

Larry Emmerson (Pete) Luke Jr., 31, of Byhalia, died Dec. 24, 2006 at his home. He was a Baptist and a construction worker.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 30 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Byhalia Cemetery. Bro. James Wolf officiated.

He leaves his father, Larry Luke and his wife Opel McCallum Luke of Lamar; a son, Larry E. (Trey) Luke III of Byhalia; three daughters, Kaitlyn Turner, Linda Turner, both of Byhalia, Kyra Beatista of Des Plains, Ill.; a brother, Matthew Justin Luke of Millington, Tenn.; and four sisters, Heidi Stewart of New Albany, Jennifer Stevens of Byhalia, Jeanie Davidson of Ohio, Rachel Davidson of Memphis, Tenn.

Jerline McCary Mack

Jerline McCary Mack, 46, of Holly Springs, died Dec. 17, 2006 at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. She was production/machine operator with ALCOA CSI in Olive Branch and a member of the church choir.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Dec. 23 at Greenwood MB Church in Lamar, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Ronnie Franklin officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her husband, Stanley Mack; a daughter, Carlesha Oranese Mack of Holly Springs; three stepchildren, Camesha Wright of Dallas, Tx., Ranesha Stephenson of Memphis, Tenn., Jamelia Washington of Olive Branch; a sister, Earnestine McCary Rooks of Holly Springs; four brothers, Floyd McCary Jr., James McCary, Cornell McCary, Terry McCary, all of Holly Springs.

She was preceded in death by a son, Mario DeAngelo McCary.

Pallbearers were Trez Gardner, Willie Pye, Lee Owens, Carl Crain, Marvin Simms, Torrance Brown, Keefer Daugherty and Rontouorus Williams.

Lenora Colbert Moore

Lenora Colbert Moore, 89, of Red Banks, died Dec. 14, 2006 at her home. She was the widow of Harry Lee Moore. She was a member of the church choir.

Services were held at Pleasant Grove MB Church in Red Banks, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. S.A. Phillips officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves four daughters, Irene Moore of Red Banks, Annie Elmore of Victoria, Oblydia Perry of Detroit, Mich., Inez Lawrence of Gulfport; five sons, James Moore of Memphis, Tenn., Edgar Moore of Byhalia, Connie Moore, Willie Moore, Curtis Moore, all of Red Banks.

She was preceded in death by children Troy Moore and Emery Moore.

Pallbearers were Reginald Elmore, Eldridge Moore, Mario Moore, Kervin Daughtery, Johnathan Moore and Derrick Parker. Honorary pallbearers were Reginald Elmore Jr., Marquis Moore, Jalen Houston, Elmecus Jefferson, Andre Moore and Kenyun Cowan.

Robert Vance Roach

Robert Vance Roach, 63, of Byhalia, died Dec. 25, 2006 at Baptist DeSoto in Southaven. He was a member of Friendship Assembly in Byhalia, and a construction contractor. He served in the U.S. Air Force, Special Unit.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Holly Springs Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Emmajean Roach; a son, Kenny Roach of Ripley, Tenn.; a stepson Ricky Gann; two daughters, Jackie Roach, Vickey Roach, both of Memphis, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Vickie Medlin of Ackerman; two sisters, Linda Hale of New Albany, Debra Sanders of Memphis, Tenn.; two brothers, Julius Logan of Myrtle, Jerry Wayne Logan of Banner; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Missy Ann Page.

William Leo Szanyi

William Leo Szanyi, 77, of Byhalia, died Dec. 24, 2006 at his home. He retired from the United States Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel. During his military career as a pilot he received the Air Force Commendation Medal; Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters; National Defense Service 6 Medal with one Bronze Star; Good Conduct Medal; Air Force Expeditionary Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars; Small Arms Expert Medal and the Air Force Outstanding Service Award with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters. He was a founding member and director of the TAC Tankers Association, LTD.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 28 at Brantley Funeral Home in Olive Branch. Burial was in Byhalia Cemetery.

He leaves his wife of 21 years, Annell a Shinault Szanyi; two daughters, Roganne Sutsos of Sonoma, Calif., Tonya Huddleston of Ripley; a son, John Szanyi of Sonoma, Calif.; two sisters, Rose Dmytryck of Pennsylvania, Margaret Hendershot of New Jersey; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Billy Szanyi, and a grandson.

Memorials may be made to the National Autism Association or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Jesse Clarence Taylor

Jesse Clarence Taylor, 73, of St. Louis, Mo., formerly of Holly Springs, died Dec. 12, 2006. He worked for Independent Packing Company, retiring from Swift Packing Company after 29 years of service. After retirement, he started his own business.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Dec. 17 at Kossuth Church of God in Christ, where he was a member. Burial was in St. Peter’s Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. Elder Robert D. Strong, pastor, officiated. Ted Foster and Sons White House Chapel North, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Gloria Gadson, Rosalind Bell; three sisters, Beatrice Ball of Memphis, Tenn., Catherine Stewart, Rosalie Taylor, both of Holly Springs; a brother, Simon Taylor; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Noah Charles Watts

Noah Charles Watts, 57, of Memphis, Tenn., died Dec. 27, 2006 at his home. He was a Baptist and a construction worker.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 30 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery.

He leaves a son, Chris Watts of Potts Camp; his parents, Douglas and Nella Rue Watts of Memphis, Tenn.; his brother, Larry Watts of Memphis, Tenn.; three sisters, Sandra Petech of Olive Branch, Linell Imming of Brandon, Fla., Deborah Smith of Hernando; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
