Irby Wayne Carpenter

Irby Wayne Carpenter, 62, of Slayden, died Oct. 16, 2007 in Memphis, Tenn. He was a business manager with Marshall County Corrections, a master of Byhalia Masonic Lodge and a member of Scottish Rites.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 19 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery.

He leaves his wife, Vickie W. Carpenter; two sons, Irby Wayne Carpenter Jr. of Sturgis, Joseph M. Carpenter of Slayden; a daughter, Crystal Bagwell of Oxford; his mother, Beth L. Carpenter of Ashland; two brothers, Cary G. Carpenter of Nashville, Tenn., Paul S. Carpenter of West Point; three sisters, Esther C. Leak of Lamar, Lisa C. Cox of Senatobia, Leigh C. Skelton of Ashland; and three grandchildren.

John Lee Daugherty Jr.

John Lee Daugherty Jr., 68, of Lamar, died Oct. 16, 2007 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was a member of Hebron MB Church in Lamar, a member of the AFL-CIO Steel Workers Union of America and a retired factory worker with Carrier, Inc. of Collierville, Tenn., after 35 years.

Services were held at 4 p.m. on Oct. 20 at Samuel Chapel MB Church in Ashland. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Algee Terry officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Willie Ruth Tipler Daugherty; three daughters, Ann Reynolds of Stafford, Tx., Sharion Tipler of Jackson, Dr. Valentenia Daugherty-Smith of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; a son, Lyndon Jeffery Daugherty of Ruleville; six sisters, Mary Daugherty, Thera Jones, Ora Parker, Dorothy Hurt, all of Chicago, Ill., Gloria Foster of Memphis, Tenn., Rosemary Adams of Cleveland, Ohio; two brothers, Walter Daugherty of Collierville, Tenn., Rev. Isaac Parker of Ashland; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Beasel Daugherty, Eudell Daugherty and Richard Parker.

Pallbearers were Eudell Daugherty Jr., Beasel Daugherty Jr., Stanley Daugherty, Isaac Parker, Ted Parker and Terry Daugherty.

Beulah Young Gallagher

Beulah Young Gallagher, 91, of Waterford, died recently. She was the widow of Ray Gallagher. She attended Smith School outside of Waterford, Waterford School, College Hill in Oxford and graduated from Marshall County Agricultural School in Slayden School in 1934. She also attended the University of Mississippi in Oxford. She taught school at Waterford and trained and boarded dogs with her husband for Lee Johnson from St. Louis, Mo. She was also the concessionaire at Wall Doxey State Park for 18 years. She was a member of Waterford Methodist Church.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 20 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel.

She leaves a son, James Ray Gallagher of Waterford; a daughter, Ruth Gallagher Ferguson of Independence; two step-granddaughters; four step-great-grandchildren; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Sammy Bailey, Kevin James, Jack Samsel, Scott Samsel, Steve Smith, Jerry Young and Perry Young. Honorary pallbearers were Gary Barnett, O.C. Burns, Beottis Clayton, Walker Coghlan, Shannon Gallagher, Kevin McGraw, Deanie Miller, Harold Palmer, Jimmy Robinson, Charles Smith, Myrle Smith and Kenneth Young.

The family requests memorials be sent to Gideons International, Spring Hill Cemetery, Waterford Cemetery or to the donor’s choice.

Eugene L. Hanna Jr.

Eugene L. Hanna Jr., of Holly Springs, died Oct. 14, 2007 at Alliance HealthCare Systems. He was the widower of Martha Hanna. He was a protein technology technician and a U.S. Army Reserves veteran.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 17 at Emory Methodist Church in Watson, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Bro. Leon Burton officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves two stepsons, Terry T. Byrd of Holly Springs, Sandy D. Byrd Sr. of Potts Camp; two brothers, Ken Hanna of Meadville, Pa., Jerry Hanna of Horn Lake; a sister, Bonnie McKnatt of Olive Branch; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Sandy Byrd Jr., Terry B. Byrd Jr., Hugh Hollowell, Stanley McKnatt, Larry Edwards, Roger Mitchell and George Powell.

Chuck Lower

Chuck Lower, 81, resident of Trinity Mission Health and Rehabilitation of Great Oaks in Byhalia, died Oct. 19, 2007. He was the former manager of Central Hardware in Memphis and a U.S. Navy Veteran.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Oct. 23 at Brantley Funeral Home Chapel in Olive Branch. Burial was in Memphis Memory Gardens.

He leaves his wife, Phyllis A. Lower; five children; a brother; a sister; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Cedar Haven Baptist Church, 750 Hwy. 309, Byhalia, MS 38611.

Henry Mallory

Henry Mallory, 68, of Holly Springs, died Oct. 13, 2007 at Alliance HealthCare System. He was a member of Free Branch MB Church in Holly Springs and a retired construction worker with APAC Construction Company.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 20 at Providence MB Church in Holly Springs. Burial was in Free Branch MB Church Cemetery. Rev. Alonzo Johnson officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves two daughters, Helen Ann Mallory of Atlanta, Ga., Jamille Renee Mallory of Kenosha, Wisc.; two sons, Henry Mallory Jr. of Champaign, Ill., Henry Mallory of Holly Springs; four sisters, Hattie Jean Lane, Ossie Mae Hubbard, Rose Harris, all of Memphis, Tenn., Willie Mae Freeman of Holly Springs; three brothers, Willie Vester Mallory, Willie H. Mallory, both of Holly Springs, George Mallory of Memphis, Tenn.; and seven grandchildren.

Pallbearers were James C. Gatewood, Milton L. Hubbard, Aaron O. Mallory, Kirk Mallory, John Curry, David E. Gatewood, Darryl F. Hubbard, Willie V. Mallroy Jr., George E. Mallory and Rev. Mark T. Harris.

Pauline Mitchell

Pauline Mitchell, 69, of Byhalia, died at her home Oct. 17, 2007. She was a member of the True Doctrine Chapel Pentecostal Church.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Oct. 20 at Brantley Funeral Home Chapel in Olive Branch. Burial was in Byhalia Cemetery. Rev. Billy Saxton officiated.

She leaves her husband of 52 years, James Lamar Mitchell; two sons, Terry Mitchell of Cordova, Tenn., Michael Mitchell of Byhalia; a daughter, Teresa Ables, of Byhalia; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Dale Ables; and her twin sister, Maxine Yeager.

John Calvin Smith

John Calvin Smith, 66, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Holly Springs, died Oct. 12, 2007 at Delta Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn. He was a member of Ellis Grove MB Church in Memphis, a church deacon, sang in the male chorus, a member of Traveling Stars Gospel Group of Memphis and a retired maintenance worker for Methodist Hospital in Memphis after 25 years.

Services were held at 12 noon on Oct. 20 at Jones Grove MB Church in Holly Springs. Burial was in Beverly Chapel CME Church in Holly Springs. Rev. John Powell officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves four daughters, Sharon Alexander, Princella Howard, both of Memphis, Tenn., Zelda Faulkner of Dallas, Tx., Consuelo Balfour of Holly Springs; two sons, John Faulkner of Holly Springs, Carlo McAdams of Memphis, Tenn.; five sisters, Zelma Smith-Wiley, Gwendolyn Jones, Bobbie Mitchell, all of Holly Springs, Percie Smith-Anderson, Azle Smith-Jones, both of Memphis, Tenn.; four brothers, Willie Smith, Joe Smith, Monroe Smith, all of Chicago, Ill., Minister Robert Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Bro. Tyrone Smith, Bro. Anthony Jones, Bro. Reggie Smith, Bro. LaJuan Jones, Bro. Michael Smith and Bro. Ronnie Wilson. Honorary pallbearers were The Traveling Stars, Bro. Willie Smith, Bro. Joe Smith, Minister Robert Smith and Bro. Monroe Smith.
