A’Darrious Deonta Finley

A’Darrious Deonta Finley, 9, of Holly Springs, died June 9, 2009 at his home. He attended Pleasant Grove MB Church and Rising Star MB Church and was a fifth grade student at Holly Springs Intermediate School.

Services were held at 12 noon on June 15 at Pleasant Grove MB Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Robert McClain officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his mother and father, Asanta Boxley Finley and Andre Finley of Holly Springs; a sister, Amiya LaRose Finley of Holly Springs; a brother, D’Andre J. Finley of Holly Springs; a grandmother, Eloise Finley of Holly Springs; grandfathers, Oliver Finley Jr., Jerry Faulkner, both of Holly Springs; great-grandmothers, Annie Earl Foster of Holly Springs, Mamie D. Malone of Waterford; great-grandfather, Henderson Miller of Waterford; great-great-grandmothers, Cora Mae Boxley of Holly Springs, Viola Watson of Red Banks; and great-grandfather, Oscar D. Watson of Red Banks.

Pallbearers were Eric Woodard Sr., Robert Smith Jr., Farrell Johnson, T.J. Thompson, Quoderick Boxley Jr., Shaun Thomas, Frederick Malone, Wardrick Wilson, Micheal Thompson and Ty Jae Hunt. Honorary pallbearers were William Robinson, Willie Lee Finley, Willie Roy Foster, Wayne Mitchell, Anthony Miller, Cezerick Malone, David Bell, Chris Evans, Timothy Washington and Ira Boxley.

Wanda Joyce Mays Garrett

Wanda Joyce Mays Garrett, 53, of Coldwater, died May 2, 2009 at her home. She was a member of the church choir, pastor aid committee, repass committee and an Upper Room Prayer Warrior.

Services were held at 12 noon on May 9 at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church in Independence. Pastor Carl S. Greer Sr. officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mays Funeral Home in Memphis, Tenn., was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a son, Mark DeWayne Mays of Indianapolis, Ill.; a daughter, Carronia Felicia Miller of Dallas, Tx.; a special daughter, Pauline; special sons, Todd, Yaphet and Antonio Smith; her father, Rev. Y.W. Mays of Hernando; seven sisters, Vera Butler, Versie Smith, both of Memphis, Tenn., Chlearo Wilkins of Holly Springs, Linda Mays of Oxford, Percilla Mays, April Phillips both of Hernando, Linda Fluellen of St. Louis, MO.; four brothers, William Mays of Southaven, Donald Mays of Olive Branch, Wade Newsom of Memphis, Tenn., Yancy Mays of Hernando; and 10 grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Bryan Mays, Chris Mays, Billy Wayne Newson, Jerome Howell, Henry Newson, and Todd Wise.

Phyllis Carrico Hardy

Phyllis Carrico Hardy, died June 8, 2009 at Methodist Hospital, Memphis, Tenn. In her younger days, she worked as a security guard at Graceland. She was a former employee of Ezon Automotive, where she worked 27 years.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on June 13 at Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.

She leaves her husband, Charles Hardy; a brother, Larry Carrico of Jackson, Tenn.; two sisters, Linda Barker, Patricia Carrico of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother-in-law, Norman Hardy of Southaven; and mother-in-law, Martha Hardy of Hickory Flat.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Tina Stewart, and a brother, John Carrico.

Thomas Hatcher

Thomas Hatcher, 62, formerly of Potts Camp, died June 11, 2009 at his home in Westerville, Ohio. He was a 1964 graduate of Potts Camp High School. He went on to graduate from the University of Mississippi and worked as a project engineer primarily for Rust Engineering.

A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. on June 20 at the home of his sister-in-law, Barbara Shepard in Oxford.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Dunn Hatcher; two daughters, Karen Breck and Laura Wood; four sisters, Sue Hodges, Cindy Bass, Margaret Greer, Virgnia Barnes; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Judy Rogers.

Otha H. Murley

Otha H. Murley, 96, of Ashland, died June 12, 2009 at Tippah County Hospital in Ripley. He was the widower of Lora Mae Poole Murley, his wife of 45 years. He was a Methodist and a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on June 14 at McBride Funeral Home Chapel in Ripley. Burial was in Friendship Cemetery in Benton County. Bro. Stanley Robinson officiated, assisted by Bro. Jimmy Curle.

He leaves a daughter, Brenda Johnson of Falkner; a son, Jimmy Murley of Holly Springs; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Zelma McCullar, Myrtle Alberson; and five brothers, Cleveland, Richard, Clarence, William and Tommy Murley.

Pallbearers were Steven Johnson, Marcus Johnson, Bailey Johnson, Blake Thomas, Edward Murley, Eduardo Hercules, Rodney Rowland and Mike Ray. Honorary pallbearers were B.J. Wiginton, Josh Windsor, Tyler Windsor and Hayden Hercules.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Lucy Lloyd King

Lucy Lloyd King, 87, of Ripley, died June 11, 2009 at her home. She was a member of Bluff Springs Baptist Church.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on June 13 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Bluff Springs Cemetery in Ashland. Bro. Faron Ash and Bro. Michael Bryant officiated.

She leaves her husband, Charlie King; two sons, Waymon Bryant, Jacky Bryant, both of Ashland; two daughters, Linda Gregory of New Albany, Patsy Forester of Cornersville; a brother, Thomas Miller of Blue Mountain; three sisters, Inez Catledge of Horn Lake, Sarah Collins of Hickory Flat, Lottie Lundy of Memphis, Tenn.; 22 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were her grandsons.

She was preceded in death by three sons, Wayne Bryant, Dennis Bryant, and Sammy Bryant.

Sheliah Holbrook Pannell

Sheliah Holbrook Pannell, 62, died May 26, 2009. She was born in Holly Springs. She has been a resident of Shalimar, Fla. since 1987 and was the owner of Kids’ Attic Pageant & Formal Wear.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on May 30 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. on June 5 at Emerald Coast Funeral Home Chapel.

She leaves her husband of 28 years, Billy Ray Pannell; six children, Roger, Terry, Cindy, Scott, Leliah, Kerian; her mother, Vedie Holbrook; her brother, Ronnie; and eight grandchildren.

Mabel McNeil Pitts

Mabel McNeil Pitts, 98, of Waterford, died June 9, 2009 at her home. She was the widow of Goldman Pitts.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on June 14 at Spring Hill MB Church in Waterford, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Anthony Marion officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves seven daughters, Hattie B. Pitts of Waterford, Johnnie Pitts, Joyce Pitts, Golia Richmond, all of Memphis, Tenn., Joe Ann Alexander of Riverside, Calif., Jeanette Edward, Alice Starks of Chicago, Ill.; four sons, Russell Pitts of Chicago, Ill., Henry Pitts of Memphis, Tenn., Paul Pitts, McNeil Pitts, both of Waterford; a sister, Willie Mae Hamilton of St. Louis, Mo.; 38 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by sons Columbus Pitts, Robert Pitts and Herman Pitts.

Pallbearers were Charles Bowling, Brandon Bowling, Larry Smith, Calvin Pitts, Darryl Jordan, Leon Smith, Larry Pitts and James Russell Pitts.
