Laura Ella Harris Davis

Laura Ella Harris Davis, 103, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Ashland, died Jan. 31, 2008 at her home. She was the widow of Wilbert Davis, a member of Poplar Springs MB Church in Galloway, Tenn., a member of the church mother board, an usher and a member of Order of Eastern Star.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Feb. 9 at New Greater Life Baptist Church, Memphis, Tenn. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Memphis. Rev. Leroy Harris officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two nieces who cared for her, Lula Beatrice Flowers, Zola Mary Wilson, both of Memphis, Tenn.; two nieces, Irene Brown, Therese (Lou Isa) Branch, both of Memphis, Tenn.; a devoted caregiver, Joseph David of Memphis, Tenn., and many step-grandchildren of Chicago, Ill.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Elvira McCoy and many other brothers and sisters.

Pallbearers were Kendrick Strickland, James Alsbrook, Hurshell L. Wilson, Tracey Jackson, Ricky James, Alvin Alsbrook, Arthur Dewayne Wilson and Robert D. Wilson. Honorary pallbearers were Clarncis Clark Jr., Lewis D. Wilson and Albert Lewis.

Sarah Gill Maddox

Sarah Gill Maddox, 86, of Greenwood, Ark. died February 5, 2008. A native of Holly Springs, she was a gifted musician and taught, directed choirs and played for most of her life. She was the widow Dr. John Maddox, to whom she’d been married for 58 years before his death. She was always willing to help with the music in churches where he pastored. She played the piano for revivals on mission trips to South America, Europe, Asia, and the Holy Land. She has authored books on the life of her mother-in-law who was a missionary in Brazil, and on the life of her son Don who passed away with leukemia. She played the piano in the nursing home where she lived the last few years of her life, ministering to others there, through her music.

Services were held February 9, in the chapel of Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock at 9 a.m. Burial was at 2 p.m. at Hill Crest Cemetery. Roller-Chenal Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her son, John Maddox Jr. of North Richland Hills, Texas, and a daughter, Nancy Combs of Mansfield, Ark.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Don, her brother, Howard Gill, and her sister, Ann Harviel.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Masters Singers Memorial Scholarship Fund to help students preparing for music ministry. The address is Arkansas Baptist State Convention, Music Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 552, Little Rock, Arkansas 72203.

Mark Penna

Mark Penna, 62, of Hickory Flat, died Feb. 10, 2008 at his home. He was a Marine, a welder with Local 614 Steam Fitters Union, a musician and recording artist.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 13 at Winborn United Methodist Church in Hickory Flat. Rev. Brownie Tohill, pastor, officiated. Serenity Funeral Home of New Albany was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Linda Penna; his children, Jeff Penna of Paducah, Kent., Stephen Penna, Michael Penna, both of Memphis, Tenn., Tammy Perrell of Harrison Township, Mich.; Matthew Penna, Samantha Penna, James Penna, all of Hickory Flat; two brothers, Charles Edward Penna of Calif., Ed Smith of Harmon; four sisters, Eva Mask of McKenzie, Tenn., Edith Bruno of Byhalia, Evelyn Jackson of Hickory Flat, Edna Rushton of Birmingham, Ala.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Josephine D. Chandler Richmond

Josephine D. Chandler Richmond, 67, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Shelby and Victoria, died Feb. 2, 2008 at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis. She was a former supervisor at Memphis Furniture Factory and an EKG technician with Methodist University Hospital in Memphis.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 9 at New Salem MB Church in Memphis. Burial was in McCraven Cemetery in Victoria. Rev. Frank E. Ray Sr. officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her husband, Alfred Lowell Richmond; a daughter, Jessie B. Parker of Atlanta, Ga.; three sons, Henry A. Parker, Patrick A. Richmond, both of Memphis, Tenn., Kenneth D. Richmond of Atlanta, Ga.; a stepson, Thomas L. Richmond of Tulsa, Okla.; a brother, Robert J. Jones of Oceanside, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Gerald Rallings Sr., Gerald Rallings Jr., Darren Rallings, Enrique L. Plunkett, Michael Rallings, Tony Rallings, Eric Richmond and Roderick Richmond.

Mary A. Rumsey

Mary A. Rumsey, 76, of Ashland, died Feb. 8, 2008 at her home. She was a Baptist. She was employed with Wurlitzer and Benchcraft.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 11 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Ashland Cemetery. Ron Norvell and Mark Jones officiated.

She leaves her husband, E.J. Rumsey; a son, Steve Rumsey of Ripley; three daughters, Bobbie Cannon of Ashland, Nancy Sanderson of Memphis, Tenn., Mary Jane Alsup of Ripley; a sister, Louise Binkley of Memphis, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Joseph Alsup, Matthew Alsup, David Cannon III, Dan Samples, Timmy Burns and Terry Rumsey.

Mary Sanford

Mary Sanford, 92, of Batesville, died Feb. 3, 2008 at Baptist Hospital in Oxford. She was the widow of Walter Sanford. She retired from Fitts Manufacturing where she was a line operator. She was a member of Eureka AME Zion Church in Courtland, where she was a missionary and a church mother.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Feb. 9 at Johnson Chapel AME Church. Burial was in Eureka AME Zion Cemetery in Courtland. Rev. Larry Key officiated. Serenity Funeral Home of Hodges and Serenity Oxford were in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two daughters, Raymond Louise Sanford of Courtland, Joyce Lloyd of Oxford; a sister, Annie Louise Herring of Courtland; 19 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and 46 great-great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Ann Santa Ana

Elizabeth Ann Santa Ana, 61, of Byhalia, died Feb. 4, 2008 at her home. She was a Presbyterian.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 9 at Byhalia Cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves three sons, Joseph Marc Santa Ana of Petal, Jamie Michael Santa Ana of Brandon, Matthew N. Santa Ana of Byhalia; two daughters, Elizabeth Michelle Howell of Long Island, N.Y., Mary S. Havener of Chicago, Ill.; her mother, Thelma Thompson of Byhalia; four brothers, Steve Allen Powell of Cooksville, Tenn., Guy Lloyd Powell, Roy Phillip Powell, Julius Lessa Wynne II, all of Byhalia; three sisters, Debrah Gaye Lindsey of Byhalia, Brenda Lee High of Mantachie, Lisa Leigh Cummings of Parkton, N.C.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Bessie Evelyn Holbrook Smith

Bessive Evelyn Holbrook Smith, 79, of Cleveland, formerly of Holly Springs, died recently. The widow of Toxie D. (T.D.) Smith, she was a registered nurse, completing nurses’ training in Holly Springs in 1950. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Cleveland, a former member of the Cleveland Garden Club and Mississippi Nurses Association.

She leaves two children, Laura Smith Legge of Senatobia; Lance Douglas Smith of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Emmett Holbrook of Holly Springs; a sister, Nell Means of Puckett; and two grandchildren.

She was buried Sat., Feb. 9 in Cleveland. Rev. Milton Boyd officiated.

Pallbearers were Michael Farr, Cardis Sparks, Tommy Barrett, Michael Smith, Hester Petty and Carl Lutrick.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Annie Lou Hoffman, Jeanette H. White, Josephine Holbrook; three brothers, James Asa Holbrook, Jesse Holbrook and Fred Edward Holbrook.
