Juett Sue Mason

Juett (Judy) Sue Mason, 83, of Hickory Flat, died May 10, 2009 at Alliance HealthCare in Holly Springs. She was the widow of Elwyn Dow (Pete) Mason, a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church in Benton County and a retired factory worker.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on May 13 at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Benton County. Bro. Clyde Thompson officiated.

She leaves a daughter, Linda Kay Mason Defer of Red Banks; three sons, Larry Elwyn Mason of Ashland, James Samuel Mason of Holly Springs, Charles Thurman Mason of Hickory Flat; 12 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Lambert; a grandson, Chris Mason and a son-in-law, Bro. Troy Defer.

Pallbearers were Scott Mason, Chris Miller, Tony Mason, Brandon Mason, Allen Conlee, Mark Watkins, Barry Clifton, Scott Williams, James Garner, Billy Lang and William Whitten.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pine Grove Baptist Church, Children’s Playground Building Fund, 6680 Highway 5, Hickory Flat, MS 38633.

Jeffie McNeal

Jeffie McNeal, 88, of Coldwater, died May 7, 2009 in Horn Lake. She was a teacher’s aide.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on May 12 at Chulahoma Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rodgers Funeral Home in Coldwater was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves eight daughters, Effie Jackson, Donnie Ree McNeal, Dorothy Faulkner, Varrie Richmond, Gwen Dowl, Charmelle Jackson, all of Senatobia, L.M. Green of Chicago, Ill., Carolyn Todd of Memphis, Tenn.; three sons, Huce McNeal Jr. of Memphis, Tenn., Kelly McNeal of Senatobia, Edward McNeal of Country Club Hills; three sisters, Annie Martin of Holly Springs, Celestine Newsom of Indianapolis, Ind., Velma Jones of Gary, Ind.; three brothers, Will Ingram Cox, Matt C. Cox, both of Chicago, Ill., Jimmy Cox of Detroit, Mich.; 27 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Dr. David Leander Stratmon Sr.

Dr. David Leander Stratmon Sr., 84, of Holly Springs, died May 1, 2009. He was the widower of Freddie Mae Stratmon, his wife of 50 years. He received his education in the public schools of North Carolina as well as at North Carolina A&T, Howard University (BS), University of Michigan (MA, PhD), Georgetown University Law Center (LLD), Arabic Language School and the National War College-National Defense University. During World War II, he served in Europe with the 3128 QM Service Company. Later as a foreign service information officer under the auspices of the U.S. State Department, he worked two-year stints in Ghana, Morocco, Chad, Jordan, France and Tunisia. He was also stationed in Congo. After retiring from the State Department, he became chair of the Department of the Political Science at Rust College in Holly Springs. Besides working with charitable groups and writing his memoirs, he has served as lector, Eucharistic minister and a choir member at St. Joseph Catholic Church for 23 years.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on May 7 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Rev. Leonard Elder, SCJ, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden in Holly Springs. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Lillian, whom he married in 1999; two daughters, Rev. Laurice Stewart and Wisilla Jordan of Washington, D.C.; two sons, David Stratmon of Atwater, Calif., James Stratmon of Durham, N.C.; two stepchildren, Lorenzo Guerrero of Memphis, Tenn., Jeanne Guerrero of Louisville, Ky.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were James D. Stratmon, Aaron Davis, Michael McCoy, Paul Smith, David Stewart, James Edwards, Israel Wilson and Jessie Wilson. Honorary pallbearers were Knights of Columbus, Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

Joann Taylor

Joann (Penny) Taylor, 69, of Holly Springs, died May 8, 2009 at Baptist DeSoto Hospital. She was a furniture store owner.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on May 12 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Temperance Hill Cemetery.

She leaves her husband, Russell Taylor; two sons, John Davis of Holly Springs, Michael Davis of Myrtle; two stepsons, Lynn Taylor of Sardis, Ricky Taylor of Hickory Flat; a daughter, Lisa Busam of Hamilton, Ohio; two stepdaughters, Teresa Lesure of Holly Springs, Tammy Taylor of Olive Branch; a brother, Bobby Crittendon of Dayton, Ky.; 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Roger Gid Williams

Roger Gid Williams, 94, of Huntingdon, Tenn., died April 28, 2009 at Huntingdon Health and Rehab Center. He was the widower of Eunice Oline (Chism) Williams, his wife of 41 years; and his second wife, Minnie Avis (Gatewood) Williams. He was a retired cotton gin worker for the Continental Cotton Gin Company and a member of the Concord Missionary Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #423 in St. Mary’s, Mo. He was a veteran of the Army and served his country in World War II.

Services were at 11 a.m. on April 30 at Chase Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery. Bro. Andrew Stokes and Bro. Rufus Chandler officiated.

He leaves two daughters, Norma S. Williams, Nancy M. Garrison, all of Holly Springs; six stepdaughters, Shirley Pruett, Charlotte Kimberlin, Jeannine Stokes, Lenita Oatsvall, all of Huntington, Lynn Waugh of Gallatin, Libby Pruett of McMinnville; a sister, Geraldine Stanford of Bartlett; four grandchildren; 15 stepgrandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, 21 step-great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter and six step-great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Stella Mead, Zelma Williams, Thelma Mead and Opal Murphy, Retha Causey, Ruby Neal Rooker; brother, T.W. (Tooter) Williams; two stepsons, James Alvin Pruett and Jerry Alan Pruett.

Pallbearers were Bobby Derryberry, Terry Kimberlin, Nicholas Oatsvall, J.J. Pruett Jr., Shane Oatsvall and David Waugh. Honorary pallbearers were Andrew Stokes, Bill Kimberlin, Dennis Stokes, Brent Oatsvall, Larry Batey, Gary Batey, Michael Magee and Guy Peck.

Gwendolyn Faye Gill

Gwendolyn Faye (Pooh) Gill, 56, of Potts Camp, died June 4, 2009 at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. She was a retired kitchen manager with ICS Headstart in Mt. Pleasant.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on June 8 at Potts Camp High School Gymnasium. Burial was in Reid’s Gift MB Church Cemetery in Potts Camp. Rev. Jerry Williams officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two daughters, Angela Jones, Dunmetria Russell, both of Potts Camp; a son, Duan Gill of Potts Camp; her mother, Olivia Massey of Hickory Flat; seven sisters, Odessa Gill, Mattie Payne, both of Holly Springs, Chaneta Jordan, Sandra K. Gill, Diane Hubbard, all of Memphis, Tenn., Carol Woodard of Michigan City, Deborah Massey of New Albany; three brothers, Darrell Massey of New Albany, Peter Franklin Massey, Earnest Gill, both of Holly Springs and a grandson.

Pallbearers were Joseph Holden, Brinkley Taylor, John H. Harris, Barry Taylor, James Dillard III, Jimmy Dwayne Jones, Frank Massey III and Derrick Beard. Honorary pallbearers were Ernest G. Gill Jr., Darrell Massey, Clarence Beard, Emmitt Nickson, Jimmie Collins, J.C. Collins and Windell Howard.

Laurie Ann Hensley

Laurie Ann Hensley, 42, of Claremont, Calif., died May 28, 2009. She was a domestic homemaker.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on June 4 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery.

She leaves her husband, Leland F. Hensley; her father and stepmother, Solon and Evelyn Tomlinson of Memphis, Tenn.; her mother, Dorothy Byais of Texas; and her son, Taran Lee Hensley of Claremont, Calif.

James Edward Hoey

James Edward Hoey, 76, of St. Louis, Mo., died May 31, 2009. He was the widower of Lisio Moore Hoey. He retired from Cooper Industries as a machine mechanic after 33 years. He owned and operated several businesses.

Services were held at 9:30 a.m. on June 6 at Layne Renaissance Chapel in St. Louis, Mo. Burial was in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Austin A. Layne Mortuary, Inc. of St. Louis was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves four sisters, Minnie Barksdale, Verleese Hoey, Josie Brown, all of Holly Springs, Edna Hoey of Aurora, Ill.; five brothers, Willie H. Hoey, Sammy Hoey, Joe Hoey, Charles Hoey of Holly Springs, Eddie Hoey of Aurora, Ill.; 11 children, 52 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Emma Hoey, and three grandchildren.
