Lucille Benson Dunn

Lucille Benson “Mother Dear” Dunn, 100, died July 3, 2014, at South Shore Hospital in Chicago, Ill. She was the widow of Alcue Suggs and Jeanus Dunn Sr. She was a member of Chulahoma MB Church. She attended Phillips Elementary School in Marshall County and Baptist Industrial High School in Hernando. After receiving her teacher certifications from Rust College, she worked as a teacher in Beth and Wyatt Elementary Schools in Tate County. She moved to Chicago, Ill., in 1943 and worked as a licensed beautician for several years. She later became a licensed practical nurse and worked in Chicago’s Home Health Care System for more than 40 years, retiring as an LPN in 1995.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on July 12 at Mt. Moriah MB Church in Chicago, Ill. Pastor Chris Allen officiated. Burial was in Mt. Glenwood Cemetery in Glenwood, Ill. Gatling’s Chapel, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a sister, Mary Benson Leverson of Chicago; five sons, Franklin (Gloria) Suggs of Holly Springs, John (Evelyn) Suggs of Memphis, Tenn., James E. Dunn, Byron Dunn and Jeanus (Betty) Dunn El Jr., all of Chicago; a stepdaughter, Betty Jean Dunn; seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Wilbur Dunn; two step-daughters, Hiawatha Dunn Cook, Essie Lee Suggs; three sisters, Magnolia Benson Alexander, Luvennia Benson Robertson and Roxanna Benson Wooten.

Pallbearers were James Dunn, Franklin Suggs, John Suggs, Jeanus Dunn El Jr., Jeffery Harris and Mike Harris.

Carol J. Gossage

Carol J. Gossage, 63, of Hernando, died July 17, 2014, at Baptist Memphis Hospital.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on July 21 at Carey Chapel Church, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her husband, Jerry D. Gossage; two daughters, Wendy Quattlebaum of Hernando, Jennifer Ticer Hooper (Tim) of Randolph, Tenn.; three brothers, Bud Rhodes, Luke Rhodes, both of Mt. Pleasant, Mark Rhodes of Memphis, Tenn.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a grandchild, Mackenzie Fugatt.

David Nelson Harris

David Nelson Harris, 49, of Holly Springs, died July 13, 2014, at his home. He was a member of the male chorus and a self-employed auto mechanic.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on July 19 at Adolphus Chapel CME Church in Holly Springs, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Billy Williams officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves four sisters, Ora Lee Houston, Lee Ora Harris, Mae Lucy Harris, Yvonne Jones, all of Holly Springs; and three brothers, Lawrence Edward Harris, Larry Harris and Henry Harris, all of Holly Springs.

Amos Jeffries

Amos Jeffries, 60, of Waterford, died July 15, 2014, at his home. He was a disabled concrete finisher with Jeffries Concrete Company.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on July 19 at Wilkins Chapel CME Church in Waterford, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Robert Odum officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Armie Jean Foster-Jeffries; two children, Mario Jeffries of Benton County, Torrocco Jeffries of Memphis, Tenn.; four stepchildren, Pamela Foster, Rachel Foster, both of Waterford, Tammy Foster of Atlanta, Ga., Valerie Foster of Nashville, Tenn.; three sisters, Betty Martin of Waterford, Luecressia Turnage, Lela Sharries Perteet, both of Memphis; four brothers, Bobby Jeffries, Alfred Jeffries, Ervin Jeffries, all of Waterford, Eddie Jeffries of Holly Springs; and three grandchildren.

Bernard Porter

Bernard “Poodlum - Stomper” Porter, 60, of Potts Camp, died July 13, 2014, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was disabled.

Services were held at 3 p.m. on July 19 at Bethlehem Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Potts Camp, where he was a member. Burial was in St. Mary UM Church Cemetery in Potts Camp. Rev. Evelyn Fitzpatrick officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves four sisters, Sabrina Porter, Dollean Porter, both of Potts Camp, Jeannette Gerrard, Lovella Robinson, both of Chicago, Ill.; and two brothers, Thomas Porter of Potts Camp, Johnny Porter of Holly Springs.

Melissa Dianne Shaw

Melissa Dianne Shaw, 43, of Ashland, died July 14, 2014, at Tippah County Hospital in Ripley.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on July 17 at Serenity Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Ashland Cemetery. Rev. Larry Tate officiated.

She leaves her parents, Freddie and Shirley Shaw of Ashland; two sons, Jonathan Keeling of Ashland, Joshua Keeling of Potts Camp; three sisters, Lela C. Skelton of Corinth, Cyndi Shaw of Tupelo, Cassandra Wilburn of Ashland; and six grandchildren.

Billy W. Taylor

Billy W. Taylor, 74, of Hickory Flat, died July 17, 2014, at North MS Medical Center in Tupelo. He was honorably discharged from the Army, serving in the Vietnam War. He received three Purple Hearts and other honors.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on July 22 at Serenity-Simmons Chapel in New Albany. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery in Potts Camp.

He leaves his wife, Lottie Taylor; five children, Donald Taylor, Tammy Gallentine, both of Oxford, Lonnie (Rebecca) Ash Jr., Donna Holmes, Sandra Skelton of Hickory Flat; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, William Lynn Taylor.

Dwight David Taylor

Dwight David Taylor Jr., 28, of Holly Springs, died July 15, 2014, in Holly Springs. He was a self-employed handyman.

Services were held at 4 p.m. on July 19 at Tabernacle of Prayer Overcoming Church of God in Holly Springs, where he was a member. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Bishop Napoleon LeSueur officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Cindy Hoyle Taylor; his mother and father, Gloria Williams Taylor, Dwight D. Taylor Sr. of Holly Springs; five sisters, Tara Taylor of Memphis, Tenn., Marie Brown of Red Banks, Melissa Taylor of New Albany, Beverly Taylor of Holly Springs, Tiffany Taylor of Soso; two brothers, Marco Taylor of Ashland, Mario Taylor of Arkansas; and his grandmother, Mary Liza Williams of Memphis, Tenn.
