Paul Gilbert Smoot

Paul Gilbert Smoot, 56, of Olive Branch, died Jan. 2, 2006 at his home. He was an engineer with Burlington Northern Railroad and a member of Meadowbrook Baptist Church.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 4 at Brantley Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Fountainhead Cemetery.

He leaves his wife of 35 years, Candace Myers Smoot; a daughter, Kristie England of Hernando; a son, Steven Smoot of Olive Branch; his father and stepmother, Charles and Bobbi Smoot of Byhalia; a sister, Judy Cartwright of Byhalia; a brother Gary Smoot of Byhalia and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Louise Heskette Smoot, also of Byhalia.

Levern Tunstall

Levern Tunstall, 38, of Holly Springs, died Dec. 23, 2005 at Baptist Memphis Hospital. He was a member of Smith Grove MB Church in Holly Springs and a tractor driver with Bolden Farms.

Services were held at 12 noon on Dec. 27 at Mt. Comfort CME Church in Laws Hill. Burial was in Smith Grove MB Church Cemetery. Rev. Willie Hoey officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves a sister, Jackie Nettles of Atlanta, Ga.; and four brothers, Marvin Tunstall, James Tunstall, Calvin Tunstall, Eric Tunstall, all of Holly Springs.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Jeffery Tunstall.

Pallbearers were Kelvin Reynolds, Michael Lay, Tim Bolden, Tracy Reynolds, Trent Martin, Alvin Lay. Honorary pallbearers were his brothers and brother-in-law, Marvin Tunstall, James Tunstall, Calvin Tunstall, Eric Tunstall and Larry Nettles.

Frances Zohn

Frances Zohn, 68, of Byhalia, died Jan. 1, 2006 at her home. She was the widow of Simon Zohn and a Baptist.

Memorial services were held on Jan. 2. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a son, Edward Zohn of Byhalia; two sisters, Odessa Bailey of Byhalia, Joyce Hutton of Washington state; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mary Rhetta Anderson

Mary Rhetta Anderson, 90, died Dec. 31, 2006 at the Harbourview Care Center in League City, Texas. She lived most of her life in Chicago, Ill., and was retired from the restaurant business.

Family graveside services were held in Potts Camp Cemetery. Bro. Donald Worsham officiated. Crowder Funeral Home in Webster, Tx. and Holly Springs Funeral Home were in charge of arrangements.

She leaves several nieces and nephews, Leslie Anderson, Mary Nell Cunningham, Margaret Greer, Linda Moorehead, James Anderson and Jay Anderson.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mae Etta Anderson; and two brothers, James Osie Anderson and Doffie Lee Anderson and a nephew, Lee Anderson.

Effie Mae Bolden

Effie Mae Bolden, 77, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 5, 2007 in Holly Springs. She was a member of Friendship Baptist.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 6 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery.

She leaves her husband, Jack Bolden; three sons, John E. Bolden Jr., Ronald Bolden, Christopher Bolden, all of Holly Springs; a daughter, Wanda Sue Stewart of Cullman, Ala., a brother, Walker Byrd of Olive Branch; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Bernard E. Dyer

Bernard E. (Vernon) (Hoss) Dyer, 76, of the Moscow community, died Jan. 4, 2007 at the Briarcrest Extended Care Facility in Ashland. He was a United States Army veteran and served overseas during the Korean War. He was a member of the 45 Baptist Church and a lifelong resident of Fayette County and the Benton and Marshall County areas. He was a mechanic for much of his life. He was a Mason and Shriner and a member of the Holly Springs Masonic Lodge and the Al Chymia Temple.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 7 at Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville. Burial, with military honors and Masonic recognition, was in the Friendship Cemetery near Moscow. Rev. Wayne Hodge, pastor of the 45 Baptist Church in Moscow, officiated. Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Freddie Watkins Dyer; his children, Wanda Rodgers of Oakland, Richard Dyer of Red Banks, Johnny Dyer of Somerville, Terry Dyer of Moscow; brothers and sisters, Cordie McClure of Moscow, Mary Feathers of Moscow, Wilma Davis of Williston, Frances Jordan of Searcy, Ark., Walford Dyer of Malvern, Ark., Johnny Dyer of Searcy, Ark., Ray Dyer of Gurdon, Ark., Claude Dyer of Trinity, Texas, and Jimmy Dyer of Houston, Texas; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were James Davis, Johnny Dyer, Mike Jordan, Conner Valentine, Randy Watkins and Dean Wilson.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the charity or organization of the donor’s choice.

Odis Garmon

Odis Garmon, 83, of East St. Louis, Ill., formerly of Michigan City, died Dec. 28, 2006 at St. Alexius Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. He was the widower of Mattie Bell Patterson Garmon, a U.S. Army veteran and a retired laborer with Armour Packing Company in St. Louis.

Services were held at 12 noon on Jan. 4 at J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Sanders Cemetery in Lamar. Elder Linton Patterson officiated.

He leaves a son, Eugene Garmon of Memphis, Tenn.; four stepchildren, Erma McNeal, Tommy Williams, Daisy Banks and Claudie Williams; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Earnestine Garmon Mason.

L.C. Lunday Jr.

L.C. (Larry) Lunday Jr., 70, of Ashland, died Dec. 29, 2006 at his home. He was a machinist with Heavy Machine, Inc. and a U.S. Air Force veteran during the Korean Conflict.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 1 at Bluff Springs Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial was in Bluff Springs Cemetery in Ashland. Bro. Faron Ash officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Geraldine Johnson Lunday; two sons, L.C. Lunday III of Ashland, Larry Scott Lunday of Freemont, Calif.; four daughters, Gwen Joyner of Guntersville, Ala., Lisa Massengill of Ripley, Stacy Young of Franklin, Tenn., Tracy Welch of Olive Branch; a brother, Harlan Lunday of Timbo, Ark.; and 14 grandchildren.
